on the 5 o clock news today they had a snip-it about buymusic.com, and tommy lee was in times square (i think) to help promote buymusic.com with a humongous billboard of tommy lee naked with a black bar over his privates saying buymusic.com.
now that realy make me not want to go to that site.

What's really getting me is the classic "We reach 97% of the market."

Slick, but Bull.

Trying to use Market Share numbers to dictate Installed Base.

BuyMusic's Market is not the computer market (97%) Windows. That market is buying computers and doing nothing else with them. BuyMusic's market is those who are using their indows Machines. And that's no more that 80% of computers worldwide.

His statement is inaccurate, but slick enough to not get accused of misrepresentation.

An accurate statement would be "We are reachable by 97% of the computer buying public."

Sorry, I work with Attorneys :D

Not only that, but you would have to throw out work computers as well. This is especially true with the licensing scheme used by buymusic where buying the music from your work computer would be a terrible idea.

I still have no idea what Apple's share (with OS X) of the installed base is, but it's more than 3%.

it wont stay for long

well, if youve seen the site i think youll agree with me that it is doomed from the start, here are my reasons why:

1. It's way to ugly, and (if possible in a website) arrogant. Enough people have heard of Itunes and have seen it to recognize it as a total attempted copy, and despite how bad people can be i dont think the'll say "ohhh cool a terrible *counteirfeit*".

2. It's not getting any press. When Itunes music store came out fortune had it on the front cover, businessweek had it all over many editions and almost every big newspaper had articles on it, so far i have not seen one national or local article about it and i doubt i will.

Maybe. But poor imitation is a clear indicator that you just "don't get it"

Actually, there were AP regurgitations on CNN/Technology and MSNBC, also in the technology section.

iTunes definitely got more press though!

amzing

Only a very small % of that 3% can access iTMS. No wonder apple's highest priority is to get more OS 9 users to switch to OS X. Add international users to that list; apple has nothing to worry about buymusic.com.

i agree partially

yes i agree with one part, international users will help for sure:), but i personally (and i could be wrong) think that after so long, if someone's using os/9 now than they will until they get a new mac with os x but i doubt there are that many people left who want to switch to x but have opted to wait a bit longer just my couple of cents
;)

Well, what would be the point? seriously, this whole debate here.. what is the point? none of us on macs can buy form buymusic.com so why even debate it? we might as well not even be able to look at what is on the site. I can understand how you must feel, having been a mac user all my life and getting treated like a second class citizen, but honestly it would be pointless to develop a way for you to see the iTMS catalog when unless there was a way to buy from it.

I went to buymusic once, and have not gone back because it does not offer anything for me, no point in wasting time when there is nothing to gain. I am sure that iTunes Music Store will be out soon for the pc and when it is, you will be able to purchase as well, buymusic.com offers no such promise.

The point is that iTMS is selling Macs. There's no question it has helped sales. Imagine how much more it would help sales if you could see what music you're missing out on.

I didn't read the thread but I wanted to toss in my 2 cents.

There is a thread about this over at the Anandtech.com forums and buymusic.com is getting it's @ss chewed over there too. It's amusing to see a board of PC users rally behind iTMS. Okay, rally might be too strong a word but they shure as heck aren't saying good things about buymusic.com :D

heh i sent off an e-mail to buymusic and the reply was so...disconcerting that i sent off an e-mail saying:
>If you have further questions, please contact us at >support@customerservice.buymusic.com.

That's exactly what i'm doing right now. I'm not happy with your level of service and lack of knowledge regarding stuff like this...and do me a favor will you? Tell that crummy Scott Blum that Steve Jobs may be "a visionary on the wrong platform" but that Blum himself is certainly no visionary and even if he was/is/ever will be he's on the real wrong platform.
anyway, i thought it was time to do a little Photoshopping...

3% BuyMusic
63% iTMS
34% Kazaa or other.

iTMS is still growing. I had an interesting thought, though, what if it isn't Mac users that're making it grow? What if there are Windows users who are basically saying that they aren't going to be downloading music until iTMS is available for them? Gee, a choice between BM now and iTMS in a few months and they're choosing iTMS. That would be saying something... Too bad we can't really know the demographics on that pole.

If the people at TechTV so chose they could just add a simple function (I know that PHP has one built in) to get the user's browser and OS, then take that data and incorporate it into the poll.

I don't think it's an issue of "can't" as it's more of an issue of "not enabled". Although at this point the existing results wouldn't have this data in them.

In my opinion, buymusic.com looks like it will be nowhere near as good as the iTunes Music Store. I talked to some Windows users and they said that they certainly wouldn't patronize it because the songs are in WMA format and because of the DRM. I think going with WMA and implementing DRM of such severity will be this services fatal flaw. The fact that it only works on Internet Explorer on Windows is less of a factor since that is what most home users are either running or have access to on their computers.

You can easily browse iTMS without committing to a purchase. I am always searching around, listening to samples, looking at the album art (I wish that there was more album info). In fact, I will often go to iTMS to see if they have a sample of a song before I go to say amazon.
Difficult to do on a pc. I believe this is what was being said.
apologies if this has alraedy been stated, I'm just wading thru'.

Not quite, I'm sure that if buywhatulike.com started a musak download service and paid the appropriate premium Tommy Lee would support it. It's all about dollars.

bought mine

i bought ben folds five the unauthorized biography... i'm not sure who's sadder buy.com or tommy lee. whos gonna be thier next spokeperson? axl rose? I can see the advertising meeting.

Well, I did my part for Apple today:

--Bought 96 tracks, about 50 bucks since I bought some Albums.

It wasn't my first music purchase from Apple, but it was my largest.

I hope everyone here posting buys something, even it is just one 99 cent song. Let's drive the sales numbers through the roof so Apple can negotiate great rights on the Windows side of the house, and so we Mac users get a renewal on their one year deal with the music companies without adding more DRM. It really is a win-win.
