What a joke, "knighthood" for the iPhone and iPad? Hahahahaha

That's almost as bad as giving it to rock stars :p

Because he has more money than he could ever possibly spend in his own lifetime (considering he'll still be receiving income of some sort, even if just royalties). Jobs may not exactly be short on cash, but he has nowhere near the amount Gates does. In all truthfulness, Gates has enough to totally eradicate the whole issue of starvation/water shortage in a country if he really wanted to. Donating a few billion is like one of us donating a few pounds (or dollars for the americans).

Except he isn't donating a few billion.

When Steve Jobs adds his name to this list:
http://givingpledge.org/#enter

then they are even. Until then Gates is doing more for the welfare of the world than Jobs is and that's not up for discussion.

Millions or billions it makes no difference. 50% is 50% and right now Steve isn't doing anything that even puts him in the same league as Gates despite being worth several billion dollars.

Even Zuckerberg put himself on that list and he still has decades to lose it all.

Nope, only a British citizen could take on the 'Sir' title, but the honour stands nonetheless.

Gordon Brown was a loathsome little toad anyway.
It would be 'Steven Paul Jobs, KBE' to give him the correct title.

The meaning of ah honorary knighthood has slipped in recent years and now really just a method of recognising an achievement.

Phil

He didn't just donate money, he and his wife set up their own charity organisation. If he had given billions to a 3rd world country, odds are the person in charge would have used the money to simply arm and supply their own millitia.

You don't see Steve Jobs doing anything for charity, maybe he does donate a small amount to charity, but he doesnt do enough to get noticed.

What can be asserted without proof, can be dismissed without proof.

I agree. While fanbois may not like Bill Gates, he has done a lot more for the world than Jobs as at this moment in time. You may not respect Microsoft, but Bill is a hell of a dude, for getting involved in humanitarian efforts around the world. Apple and Jobs are more worried about where they're going to build their next Apple store and to bemoan any competitors efforts by calling them laughable, big bags of hurt and DOA. Smug doesn't equal humanitarian.

Besides that, I don't think the queen could lift the sword over Steve's EGO to complete the ceremony.

gordon brown -> good riddance

But Apple cares about the environment y'all LOL

Seems a very petty reason for blocking him. Which also makes you question how merited other such honours are.

I think it perfectly illustrates the type of character we were unfortunate enough to have as an (unelected) prime minister for several years. I'll refrain from saying any more because this isn't in PRSI ;)

Right result, wrong reason.

+1

Jobs is the best CEO there is, he is a perfectionist, real visionary and the company has created some truly revolutionary products under his reign.

On the flip side.. Jobs is controlling, dictatorial and greedy. His every move in the last few years has attempted to further tighten the Apple's grip over his customers, developers and content publishers. He wants us to live in the world where only himself and Apple have unfettered control over our computers - how we use them, what content we can view on them, what applications we run on them.

Jobs dictatorial nature is why he is not worthy of a knighthood.

QE is the Queen!

Well, better than bending down on your knees for some other country's 'so-called queen' IMO.

:(

Or bowing to the King of Saudi Arabia - but not the Queen of England (like BHO). (Maybe there's special dispensation for 'so-called' Nobel Prize (gag) recipients! IMO). If this story is true, Gordon Brown is a petty, JERK!

The Beatles Connection

I think Sir Paul McCartney blocked it. I would have said Yoko Ono, but she isn't Brittish, is she...

Gorden Brown is a useless ****** this is a man that cut the N.H.S budget and said that nurses, doctors and nhs staff were not going to get funding as they are a waste of money then his wife has problems in hospital and his baby ends up needing care that the hospital couldn't afford so it died.

I think Steve deserves massive credit he has built :apple: into a power brand an innovator yes he is tyrannical at times but he is a visionary and focused in what he believes, i was a firm disliker of :apple: i have been windows though and though even slagging off :apple: and :apple: fanboys until i sat down and used a mac and looked into :apple:'s products now I'm unsure if i need windows again a :apple: convert in everyway, we never hear of :apple: diehards leaving :apple: to only use Windows cause it don't happen.

Arise Sir Steven Jobs in my mind you are indeed worth a Knighthood in my country.

Brown was just implicated for having secret dealings with Krazy Kadafy to return the Lockerbie (sp) bomber in return for oil deals....

That pretty much makes him a stink bomb to anyone I would think.

Better to be knighted by a better person, later.

Giving Steve Jobs a knighthood would really show how much the awards thing here is out of touch. It used to go to people who actually done something special, now anyone is getting it, and if Steve Jobs gets one, where do we stop?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

As a Brit I'm all for knight hoods, there is nothing wrong with a bit of tradition and regardless of how you see it it's essentially a big 'well done/thank you'.

However I can't see what sj has done to deserve it tbh.

I would rather knighthoods be used exclusively for the military as risk so much and so really earn their stripes.

Should Gordon Brown have blocked the application because Steve failed to attend a Labour conference? No. Yet another example of an abuse of power by a Labour politician. Should GB have ever had any power whatsoever? A debate for another day.

Should Steve Jobs have a knighthood? Yes. He deserves it for dragging technology forward kicking and screaming. You may not like Apple or Jobs, but you cannot deny that they have introduced great tech.

I, knight Steve Jobs for services to technology. Arise, Sir Steve Jobs.

BUT, let's not take it out of context, it is recognition for services to an industry. We have a runner do well in the olympics, they get knighted, we have an elderly lady help kids cross the road for 50 years of her life with a smile on her face, they get knighted.

Alan Sugar, he has a knighthood ... for services to business. Recommended by Labour as it happens ... a year later he donated £200,000 to the Labour party ... he now has a peerage (Baron Sugar) ... given to him by Gordon Brown.

Go figure.
