What about asking Adobe, for example, to port their products to Linux? (although I would prefer Solaris)

Adobe killed UNIX support many years ago. I still have Illustrator 3 on my SGI Octane. To get them to start that up again would be tough. They would have to go up against the free and distro included Gimp. Even though I use Gimp from time to time I prefer photoshop, Illustrator and the like.

Clearly Steve Jobs doesn't want our money. Simple solution: don't give it to him. Poor sales will send a much louder message than a petition or even bad reviews in the mainstream press.

Unfortunately I believe that for every one of us who cares about FireWire, there are two switchers who don't even know what it is. If Steve can sell them a new MacBook he doesn't need us.

At the same time most Windows people are used to having a dozen brands of everything to choose from. They change their purchase habits as often as they change their shirts. Should Apple cease to be "cool" that great mass of switchers could dry up leaving Steve with only those he has chosen to annoy.

I really like whatever site took Steve to task for how irresponsible this move is from an environmental standpoint. Apple is including manufacture, shipping and use into their carbon calculations, but they've forgotten to include the horrendous cost of replacing perfectly functional FireWire devices with USB models. A greener Apple they are not!

I have a miniDV camcorder that can transfer video only via FW. If i did get the Macbook without FW, I'd have to get a new camcorder that can transfer video via USB. That'd mean I'd have to throw away a perfectly good camcorder for no good reason. Not to mention the unnecessary consumption of energy to buy a new camcorder. AND I will have to work extra hrs to make $ to pay for that new camcorder, generating more pollution, unnecessarily.

ALL because someone wanted to make extra $700 for 1 lousy FW port.

This is NOT cool. Apple is NOT cool.

I love that there is no firewire... what a waste of space... those who complain, just stick with your current rig, you don't need the latest stuff... and if you do, perhaps look for alternatives... there are other companies u know, apple isn't the only one manufacturing laptops

That was Unix, a niche platform, not a mass market like Linux or OpenSolaris.

So you are just giving in to being taken for a ride? It's because of people like you that this usa is in the dumps.

Why bother to complain? just take what's handed out to you. right?

sorry, couldn't help it.

This.

I understand how this whole "Eco-friendly" crap has turned into an awesome marketing gimmic by a bunch of companies, but apple has already messed up by encouraging the disposal of "outdated" peripherals.
Personally I don't care about the Eco footprint of my machines.

it's a main reason i'm not buying a macbook, it's clear that this was made to create a clear distinction between the macbook line and the macbook pro line.

And to make people interested in the Air to buy it, not to spend less on a MacBook because it has FireWire.

Apple however is the only one manufacturing laptops with OS X. This is the sticking point, if Vista wasn't a terrible performer I would start looking for another laptop offering me what Apple doesn't. I can only hope the efforts to port OS X to other machines carries on full steam ahead.

People it is all really simple, what Steve said is basically true, but it all comes down to this...... They had to do something to get people buying the MacBook Pro over the MacBook. End of story! Does it suck? For some yes, but that is business for you.

You clearly don't have ANY idea of what you're talking about do you? There is no hub you can hook into a USB port and then use with Firewire peripherals.

Try again. That's for USB to USB.

This topic about the "magic" adapter (that's non-existent) has been covered in this thread several times.

Really? Then what does this mean on the description page
One USB male to 4P 1394 firewire adapter
if it's not usb to firewire??

im not slagging you guys off... i mean, I know firewire is a MUST for some of you but now that the new MB/MBP have been released, what else can you do? perhaps wait out till they revise them? my theory is why complain when there isn't much apple will do at this point. they're not going to take ALL the MB/MBP back to add a firewire port. they will prob add the firewire just like when the released the new MBA with the new display port.

:) It's a shame there is no video editing software available for Linux. And of course PS is missing.

You could physically hook it up but it won't magically turn a USB port into a Firewire port that will magically enable any Firewire device to work via a USB port. Different protocols... It won't work.

A store near here sells that cable kit. It include various types of USB and Firewire plugs -- only thing you could do Firewire-related with it is to turn a USB cable into a Firewire cable by using a Firewire plug adapters on both ends.

If you don't complain now they will take it away from mbp later.

That's basically what a some people said when Coca Cola introduced the new Coke.

“Coke wasn't prepared for how the public responded,” said John Craven, editor of BevNet.com, a Web site that monitors trends in the U.S. beverage industry. “If you look at it, the success of New Coke was that it got people pissed off enough to care about regular Coke again.”

Actually I'ver never seen a notebook without FireWire. Even the cheapest Asus notebook from the supermarket has FireWire...

There are plenty of consumer cameras that do not need FW, so to argue that it is not a trend going toward USB is a bit difficult. So how was Jobs wrong?

Without a doubt many cameras still require it.

Whomever said AVCHD was inferior as a compression, have you even seen the video output from one of these cameras? It is absolutely amazing. The Canon we have shoots in that format is nearly perfect. All that goodness occurs over USB 2.0

The flash cameras like my little "throw away" Aiptek record on to SD card at 1080p no less. Very simple to get that video into iMovie as well.
