One thing I wonder, though, is why all this fuss is being made over the 2-year contract period of the original iPhone owners. I bought an original iPhone in November 2007, and then an iPhone 3G in July 2008 . . . there was no problem with AT&T, they just let me extend my contract. I'm very much hoping they let me do the same thing with the V3 iPhone. I think a LOT of sales would be lost if they charged 499/599 for the new phones to people who faithfully bought the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and now the iPhone v3.
In the US, people who bought a 1st gen iPhone paid full price so selling them a new phone before the contract is up was/is not a big deal. Those who bought an iPhone 3G a year later purchased a phone that was subsidized by AT&T by prorating it with a 2-year contract.

I don't think you will be able to upgrade from an iPhone 3G bought in the past year to a new iPhone Video unless you are willing to pay full price.

As someone who bought the 1st generation iPhone on June 29, 2009…
I think you meant 2007

My applecare runs out on June 29. The last thing I would want is to have the new phone released in late July or August or September (as Gene Munster has hinted) since if the iPhone dies beyond June 29, I need a cellular phone and will be forced to get a phone I'd rather not have.

If you are in the USA, worse case scenario, go to Best Buy or Walmart and buy a $19 Go-Phone and use it with your iPhone's SIM card until the new phone becomes available.

I'm a lawyer, and if I had an extremely powerful client, that client would certainly not show up to a routine zoning hearing, and that client would expect that I come up with arguments for why they should not have to appear. Can you imagine the circus if everyone knows that someone of Steve Jobs' stature is going to be in an uncontrolled setting? A lawyer worth his billable rates will do whatever (or say whatever) is necessary to keep the client from attending. (I know that will only confirm what people think of lawyers, but hey, it's what we do, and if you need us, you call).

You obviously don't have any clients like Steve Jobs as statements like that could cause millions of dollars of damage to the Apple's stock value. I would fire my lawyer if that was the best he could come up with.

Steve will not return himself, but will reveal the new iJobs. It's a full size Steve Jobs robotic personal digital assistant to help the major corporations. GM going down the tanker? You need iJobs to get your stock prices rising.

Turn him over and you'll reveal that, much like the Apple Store's handheld credit card readers, he will only run on Windows Mobile. Of course this means their will be approx. 2 apps that work for him.

Steve will call Phil Schiller during the demo of the new iPhone's video calling feature. Just you watch.

And remember, I called it first.

Totally agree. He will be there without really being there.

MAN I'd love to talk to you when you pass 40. Steve is 55, fercrissakes, that AIN'T old. I'll give you the other health issues, but c'mon....

LOL.. Agreed! :)

But Steve Jobs still have to repair his biggest mistake! Microsoft is still leading and he's the only one who can kill Microsoft.

Ha ha, It'll probably take Jobs another couple of lifetimes to achieve something as irrelevant and pointless as that!

heres the thing, i bought the original iphone, with a 2 yr contract and at any time since last summer i could get a 3G, which would have extended my contract. but i didnt, which means my 2 yr contract is up and im free to move to a different carrier. maybe for a different phone... say like the PRE, or a verizon blackbery.

no one with a 3G can switch carriers with out paying a termination fee, but all OG iphone owners are free agents. att and apple do not want me having even a month of freedom to think about *trying* a palm pre.

What's that quote that I think Steve Jobs said? I think it was something like:

People need to let go of the notion that for Apple to be successful Microsoft needs to fail.

I'll give twenty internets to whoever can find that exact quote somewhere for me!

You can hear it here at 7:25

Wow nice pool!!

That's the southwest corner, Jobs has the northeast corner. His pool is by the three bedroom poolhouse.

"We have to let go of this notion that for Apple to win, Microsoft has to lose -Steve Jobs-"

If Apple was my company, i would love to know that my company is #1 when i die instead of #2. Being number two makes me feel un-accomplished in this world.

I am betting that there will be a reduced price for last year's 3G buyers with a 2 year contract renewal. Phones priced at a subsidized $199 will likely be $299 or a bit more. There will probably be new tethering and video data plans that will incent AT&T to provide these new phones to its customers.

Apple is #1 in tons of ways. Regarding their computers they are the number 1 high end consumer OS, consumer computer and high end smart phone.

Market share is far from everything.

It's all relative to your definition of "#1". In my opinion, Apple is #1. Perhaps not in marketshare or market-cap, but in user experience and satisfaction. Jobs has no reason to feel "un-accomplished".

This is a very good point. While many people have seemed to become anti-Steve lately, I'm going to lean the opposite way. Steve Jobs has done some great things for Apple, and while each has been monumental in respective ways, I think he's got something else planned. I hope Steve stays with the company for as long as he sees fit to accomplish his greater idea of what's to come.

He'll leave when his vision for Apple is complete. And that's fine with me.

Sorry to disagree, but everyone knows he is out on leave, so I doubt it's a surprise to anyone, and would batter the stock. What are you supposed to say, he is out of the country. That doesn't work.

If being #-anything when you die makes you feel accomplished or not, you need to rethink your priorities. You don't take anything with you. And if on your death bed all you're concerned about is your company's ranking, then you haven't lived any life worth living.

Guess I must've missed the explanation for why Jobs would ignore nine months worth of weight loss. Hopefully, he doesn't have an eating disorder. If I lost weight and wasn't on an exercise or food restriction plan, I'd see the doctor pronto (well, maybe I'd wait a couple of months to lose a few pounds ).
Still, I'm glad that he'll be finally coming back later this month. If he shows up at WWDC (literally or virtually), that'll be a plus. However, I'm not going to disappointed if he doesn't.

Here is what I think would be totally awesome (and this would totally be Steve's style...)
Phil Schiller finishes what we think is the normal Keynote and is giving closing remarks. Just then we hear a familiar voice..."But there is one more thing..." At that point Steve Jobs walks out and announces the next generation iPhone. Or maybe just comes out and announces the date for a media event that will announce the next iPhone. Either way, that would be a grand reappearance for Steve.

Jobs was on a very restrictive diet (vegan). Jobs has a history of health issues. Jobs has many doctors. Jobs didn't ignore months of weight loss. Jobs doesn't have an eating disorder.

WTF! Where have you been?
