I don't get it. People on here act as though steve jobs was the designer and creator of every single apple products the last 10 years. Wasn't he infamous for putting his name on patents that he had nothing to do with? I'm sure apple will be fine. Overreacting fan boys has become the norm amongst apple users i'm afraid.

Steve personally killed many projects and vetoed others that never saw their way into an Apple product or service. No, he never designed and invented everything, but he guided the company to where it is today. He did that by defining the big picture and controlling what the company released. He wasn't a god, but a great leader.

I think you're suffering from tunnel vision.

Sad

I'm not sad for Apple--they will be just fine, and Apple has a lot of great people. I'm sad for Steve...I hope his health will recover without the demands of being Apple CEO (all those flights to Asia can exhaust anyone). He's a great man who has had a positive influence on my life since I got my first Apple three decades ago...

Well I can't say I am totally surprised, but am a little disappointed the day has come. I think it has been great the effort Jobs has continued to put in despite his health issues. Although I at first feared for the future direction of the company, I remembered how Cook has helped with a lot of the decisions for over the years and I have faith the company will continue on being my company of choice for computing products. I get hassled on a daily basis about being an Apple fan, and it is hassling I am willing to accept. My Apple products work when I need them to, case closed.

Guess there WAS something to moving the release date of the biography forward.

I'm 39 and can't think of another person who's been more iconic during my lifetime.

He always had his hands in development. If he didn't like what the product was becoming he killed the project. Steve was very into his job and loved the designing and development aspects more than full on running the company. He may have not made or developed the products but he had final word on it all.

Not many are overreacting but SJ has taken a company from the brink of failure and turned it into one of the most valuable companies in the world.

Read up on him some and you will see that he played more than just CEO. He had his hands in all areas of Apple.

To all those people talking about stock, Steve is resigning because he's got health issues, which have to be very serious for him to not be able to do his job, So try and have some respect, will you?!?!?!

Thank you Steve for so many years as a great CEO!

Hopefully his health is not deteriorating and he goes on to enjoy many successful years as Apple chairman

What a Run . . .

As a user of Apple products since 1983, all I can say is . . . wow. Just wow. I am literally floored right now. I have watched (as has so many) Steve bring out innovative product and idea - one after another. Something almost unheard of in any product field. As a designer, I have always admired his taste, his attention to details and how something so simple can also be so beautiful and artistic. He made me love computers. Period.

And after he was fired/quit, I remember walking into a Next computer showroom. It was amazing. It looked like a showroom for a Ferrari dealership. Every little detail was impeccable. I turned to my friend and remember saying "Steve's back!"

We will miss you at the helm Steve. Take care of yourself. Hopefully I will be able to walk into an Apple Store in the near future and still be able to say "Steve's Back" once more.

And our first Godwin's Law post.

Congratulations. A more inappropriate comparison I could never have thought of.

I can't say I didn't expect this. So let's just be clear:

Note that I said Germany.

I made no comparison to it's governing institution or philosophical view of said institution.

The comparison stands because even though Steve Jobs has left Apple at it's highest point ever, he also leaves Apple in a very precarious situation that has been mounting as Apple expanded it's market into territories traditionally held by other conglomerates.

When all these companies suddenly prioritize you as its #1 opponent and your leader is dying. What then?

Yes, it could take years, but sooner or later, the immense resources brought to bear will eventually find a flaw in Apple's inpenatrable armour.

Nothing lasts forever.

We will continue to see great iPhones, Macs, iPads, and iPods, for years to come, with or without Steve. I wish him all the best, and I also wish that people would settle down about this news.

Nope.

First misstep Apple makes will be it's death knell. "That wouldn't have happened with Steve Jobs at the helm" will be what we all say, which will just snow ball effect making us think Apple is different and worse off.

Wow!

WOW!!

The baton has been passed.

CEO is now a board member ... in essence this change helps keep Steve at the helm, allowing him more rest time and time with family and closest of friends - in person or via iChat (remotely) and given well deserved CEO roll to Mr. Cook.

Not bad and honorable of Steve.

Apple shouldn't be suffering in after trading value due to this announcement - is the perfect time.

the REAL question is: will the next WWDC be the LAST "On Stage" appearance of Jobs for announcements?! And then after wards a Video Conference in for showing features or Steve deep within the audience as a surprise?! That would be cool.

Maybe as Steve gets further away from daily operations Apple will see the light and move back into areas where they lately seem to be leaving.

It should be possible to concentrate on both lightweight laptops and pro-grade desktops. Unlike the latest trends suggest it is also possible to produce both a great iOS device OS and still improve on a desktop OS for experienced users.

I second that! +1

Bring on the new Clone Wars. Here's hoping Apple can stay afloat. They have yet to prove it without him.

Thank you Steve!!!!

I know this is just another chapter in your storied life. Take care amigo and thank you. Will pray for you and your family.

Oh no! 2012 is coming and so is the end of the world!

No, not really.

I guess wish Steve the best.
