For God's sake people are talking about Wall Street overreacting. Just look at this thread! Almost everyone on here is certain that he is going to die within a matter of weeks! He's probably decided that he's dedicated enough of his life and energy to being CEO of Apple. If he was about to die, he wouldn't stay on as chairman. Also, as great as he was Steve Jobs is NOT Apple. He's obviously given much thought to his succession plan and he's stated before that he is completely confident in Apple's ability to run without him. We will continue to see great iPhones, Macs, iPads, and iPods, for years to come, with or without Steve. I wish him all the best, and I also wish that people would settle down about this news.

But he was Apple for god sake!! Have a look at where Apple was under Gil Amelio when Jobs left and then what Jobs did at NEXT with the likes of Bertrand Serlet. Apple was failing and then ge came back, and turned Apple around almost straight away.

Have a look at the All Things D interview with him and Gates and just see what Gates says about him. There will never be another Jobs. That's just a fact.

If people think Apple will be the same with Cooke, Federeghi, Schiller, Forestall et al it just won't.

Goodbye Steve... but we know what your playing at.

While today's announcement comes as a bit of a shock. Heres to hoping Steve stages a miraculous recovery and is back in 10 years. At least this time Steve will still be around to prevent the Performa/Newtons Return.

Goodbye Steve, and thanks for all the Macs. Lets see you get better and remain as chairman for long enough to secure Apples future.

I can't believe people are shocked over this. The man had/has pancreatic cancer. You can run from this type of cancer as it will always get you. He and Apple are prepared for this and has a succession plan. I will miss his Keynote announcements. He put together a great team. Apple isn't going to flounder. God bless you Steve!

This is an end of an era for sure. I can't wait to see what new products they introduce post-steve.

He did state his wish to continue to chair the board. So we may still continue to see some of his influence on the company and its products.

I think that for reasons of his health, he has realized that he can no longer put all of his energy into micromanaging things, but due to his personality, he cannot stop himself from doing so. Therefore, the only solution is to distance himself from the temptation.

It is not the role of the Chairman of the Board to micromanage. He can still guide Apple, but the day-to-day decisions will now be left to Cook. In the long run, probably not a bad thing, because Jobs has been unable to carry out his duties for some time, and Apple does not need to have a mere figurehead for a CEO. With Jobs' role in limbo, the company was at risk of drifting aimlessly while awaiting further announcements regarding his health.

First time I've logged on in a coupla months (though been checkin the site) to post this.

First of all, the above quoted statement really explains the resignation well.

Thanks, Steve, for all the amazing high quality products you've pushed out there, thanks, Steve, for changing the way computers and Tablets work, and thanks, Steve Jobs, for changing the world. We're going to miss your energy in the position of CEO.

Good luck to Tim Cook. He's got the shoes of a giant to fill.

I can't imagine Apple ever being really the same again without Jobs at the wheel, though I think it'll stay on track with him right next to the driver.

Steve personally killed many projects and vetoed others that never saw their way into an Apple product or service. No, he never designed and invented everything, but he guided the company to where it is today. He did that by defining the big picture and controlling what the company released. He wasn't a god, but a great leader.

I think you're suffering from tunnel vision.

To think that one man runs a multi billion dollar company and all the vetoing and go aheads are issued by him is asinine. The product engineers brought the company to where it was today. You think the board of directors wouldn't have (and haven't) shot down a stupid decision by Jobs? Apple is having a great amount of success right now but there have been plenty of flops too. Funny how you all never blame jobs for that. There are TEAMS of people that make the products. I think the apple fan base has clearly embellished his role in all of apple's success. Has he been a part of it? Of course he has, but not nearly to the extent that everyone likes to think so.

I don't think Apple will be the same again to be honest.

It won’t and it shouldn’t. Apple will continue to thrive and be one of the most innovative companies on the planet because unlike his ouster at the hands of Scully, Steve has been planning for this eventuality and transforming the company to exist beyond his admittedly critical influence.

Too bad.

Well Steve is Apple and Apple will always be Steve.

I am sure he will still be part of it with his vision.

Be well and strong Steve!

I think it is almost safe to say that with that following Job's passing, Apple can only decline from here on out.

Undoubtedly, Apple will continue to be profitable and the upcoming projects Jobs oversaw will yet again take the world by storm. Still, no one else in the company matched his level of charisma or his vision.

The numerous rivals the company has made over the years, including but not limited to Google, Microsoft (it's long time rival), Sony, Nintendo, Rim, can smell blood and will be ready to pounce.

Remember that Germany was doing well for itself in 1941- until they found themselves in a two front war with the Russians, the British, the Americans and the Canadians all simultaneously.

Apple is surrounded by its enemies and now its leader, who has led the fray time and again, will soon be gone.

I agree, but for slightly different reasons. "Trees don't grow to the sky" is the old investment adage.

Open message to Mr. jobs:
Be well Steve. You, and Apple, have changed the world.

Glad he's still on the board, as Chairman and director.

AAPL fell in after-hours trading to a low of $350 (less than an hr ago). Back up to $357, now hovering around $356. In the last hour, volume up from <200,000 to 1.2M. Looks like some bargain hunting going on. I would be very surprised if it opened lower than after-hours' low; then again it's the stock market...

(-7% low, regaining to -4.92% at 4:35PDT, or $357.68)

Godspeed big man

Ffs hes not dead. You people are acting like he just dropped dead.

Well, the first conclusion the average member here will draw is that he doesn't have long. :(

However, technically there is nothing to actually support for that conclusion. Let's hope there never will be.

Jeez, people! He is still on the Board. Tim, the CEO, will still report to him. Apple and it's innovations do not rest on Steve's shoulders alone. He is continuously aided by brilliant engineers, designers, programmers etc. So give him a nice encore for the incredible things he had done for the company, and let Apple enters a new phase. I am looking forward to long years of great products from Apple that would dazzle the eyes and intrigue the mind.

Think positive. Steve will be chairman of the board for years to come and will retire from that position a very old man.
