Very sad news, indeed. I wish him all the best. I am happy, however, that he'll be continuing on as Chairman of the Board; he'll no doubt still have a lot of influence on the company as long as he's still around.

I think this says it all:

But he was Apple for god sake!! Have a look at where Apple was under Gil Amelio when Jobs left and then what Jobs did at NEXT with the likes of Bertrand Serlet. Apple was failing and then ge came back, and turned Apple around almost straight away.

Have a look at the All Things D interview with him and Gates and just see what Gates says about him. There will never be another Jobs. That's just a fact.

If people think Apple will be the same with Cooke, Federeghi, Schiller, Forestall et al it just won't.

Actually it is God sake...

Thank you Steve for an exciting 35 year ride, from Apple I to iPad via NeXT and Pixar it has been anything but boring. (Even through the years I wandered through the Windows wilderness).

Also, all the best Tim!

Get bill gates to be new CEO!! Get apple into enterprise !!

As much as it sucks that he has stepped down, I am quite excited to see where Apple is headed. Good or bad.

Steve is almost single handedly responsible for the level of technology we use today, on a daily basis. I hope in this new position he's able to have less stress and more recuperation.

He's still a key figure on the Apple board - and you can bet that while Tim Cook is the Head Honcho, anything Steve says will still be taken very, very seriously. He's no longer the CEO; it hardly means his influence in the company is gone.

:)

Perspective.

a) he is not dead, he's stepped down
What that means as far as his health is anyone's GUESS... and until something is stated for fact - there's no need to get over-melodomatic. What will happen will happen when it happens

b) anyone posting things like "never forget" should have their head examined for comparing Steve stepping down to something like 9/11 and the holocaust where thousands/millions of lives were lost.

In other words - some people should think before they post/click "submit reply"

I hope his health is ok. And I wish him well.
But this could not happen at a worse time. All the PC manufactures are hurting and Apple is kicking but in sales. I hope Tim Cook can keep the momentum that Steve has started going for Apple.
