Agreed. As long as he is an employee of Apple, he will have the final word. Not because of his position in the company, but because of his wisdom and valued opinion. It's Cook's company now, but Steve will still play a large role.

Without knowing his health status (I would assume dire) we do not really know what input he is going to have in the short term or mid-term.

Hopefully Steve will do another "One More Thing" and introduce us to the next great thing from Apple.

Steve has been the leader in innovation in the technology world from the beginning practically. His departure as CEO of Apple is a sad day for me.

Stocks ? who cares. It's the spirit that makes one wealthy not money.

And thanks to all you people that decided to post ignorant remarks. It reminded me why I left this place.

This is exactly why.

All I can say is OMG. I expect apple's stock to tank tomorrow.

I can say that I am sad to see him go :(

Generally speaking stocks tend to drop if there is a lack of direction - Apple has now opened up on details regarding the succession plan and most investors who have their act together know that Apple is an entirely different beast than it was 15 years.

It's pretty unambiguous that that's exactly what's happened. :(

This along with the early biography release(despite the author disagreeing with this) are really worrying.

I hope Steve gets well. I bet it was painful for him to write that letter.

Being in a high stressed job probably wasn't help his health and recovery so it is good the the he is going to relax and have some time off. As much as I admire Steve's determination and drive he also needs to look after himself for the sake of his wife and kids.

Wow

see ya around steve

"babe i'm gonna leave you..." - led zeppelin

"i think i should be going..." - long time - boston

This Zep song came on just as i got to this page... then I saw ur post.
It really is nothing but coincidence...

But I'm just saying  it kinda tripped me out lol

there is no other tech company out there that does it like Apple. All them mother**** ever do is make trash with a 3 month shelf life. Google ain't sh**, Sony ain't sh**, Samsung, LG, MOTO etc. They can all kiss my a**.
I have never been so happy with a tech company as I am with Apple.

Without knowing his health status (I would assume dire) we do not really know what input he is going to have in the short term or mid-term.

He requested he stays a member of the board. I think that pretty much answers that question.

I honestly had to do a double-take when I read this article and his letter, though given the health issues he's been having recently, it didn't really come as a surprise... my thoughts go out to him and his family, and I can only hope that Tim Cook was able to absorb at least some of Jobs' managing ability/vision over the last few years.

He's still chairman, director, and employee. Just because he isn't the CEO doesn't mean he won't offer his insight and do a keynote or two.

Best of luck Steve, and get well soon =)

Thank you Steve. You are the biggest reason Apple is where it is today. All of the amazing technologies the company has produced over the last decade probably never would have happened if it weren't for you.

I can honestly say your resignation has put a dent in my day. I am a huge fan of Apple and all if its products and mostly a huge fan of you and the change your company has brought to the world.

I wish you the best of luck in your battle against cancer and hope you find yourself in full health soon. You have always been one of my biggest inspirations.

I know he'll never read this, but if I could speak to him, thats what I would say.

I was afraid of this day. And i'm afraid that the reason behind his resignation is his health.

Here's hoping the best for Steve.

Apple will last well over a century. And this isn't the same Apple as it was over a decade ago. It won't fail without Steve, i'm sure they made contingency plans and have long term plans. But it will definitely take a hit, Apple right now needs to find a charismatic visionary.

People need to acknowledge Tim Cook as fast as possible, his resume and track record is amazing.

I hope that Steve will still introduce the iPhone 5.

"We execute our succession plan."

That doesn't sound like a resignation from someone expecting to stay around. I hope his health gets better (as this is reason behind the resignation) and he gets many years to enjoy life away from work.

Edit: You also wonder about the timing. For a company as good as apple at timing you start to think whether Steve was unwell and they delayed the iphone 5 hoping he would be well enough to release it.
