I have to say that this doesn't surprise me, but it is very sad. I was sitting in my college cafeteria when the news broke on CNN- didn't really know what to think. I tweeted about it before Engadget though.

I hope Jobs still does keynotes- I just hope it isn't Tim doing them. Phil or Ives would be much better, IMHO.

I wish you the best Steve, and I am happy to see this day come and know that you're still alive, as I thought you would never leave Apple until you died.
Honestly, I think that is what I will miss most. The keynotes.

Steve made you feel like part of the Apple family, coming on stage in his turtleneck and jeans. It was really informal and it wasn't about just going over the new product, it was about connecting with the audience and Apple's fans. It's not going to feel the same having a guy go up on stage in a suit and tie and just talk about the products specs.

Steve wasn't the greatest at dictation, but that was what made his such a great speaker in my opinion. He connected with the audience, because he made you feel that he was JUST as excited as you were. You felt like you were on his level, and I don't get that from Tim Cook. Cookie is a great leader, and I don't mind him as CEO, but I don't think he should do the keynotes. Hopefully that is why Steve is staying on as Chairman of the Board.

It means little to Apple in the short- to medium-term. SJ has already been on medical leave for seven months, so this is more like just clarifying the situation. During that time he's still been involved with Apple's corporate direction, and that is also unlikely to change. In any case Apple's product line is set for the next couple of years at least; there shouldn't be any major changes there.

Long-term, "the vision thing" may be a bit different without SJ's personal direction, but that may turn out to be a good thing. It was bound to happen at some point anyway.

Thanks.

Steve forever changed the way students, business people, leaders and regular joes communicated, produced, learned, and watched. For that, I thank him. I also hope his health is not continuing to deteriorate.

It was an amazing run - may it continue with Tim! :apple:

He requested he stays a member of the board. I think that pretty much answers that question.

Might be for show though. Reaction would've been larger if he just flat-out left. Face it, pancreatic cancer is a bitch. Jobs isnt (likely) getting any better.

Whats important here

I know stocks are key to some of you guys, but this is about a man who has done extraordinary things. Forget monetary gains for a moment and lets wish him well, a long life and continued contribution to all things Apple. :)

Stepped out while the company is at the top. Best choice.

Amazing man, when you think back. What a road through life, and what a triumph. Sure, he was always historic since the Apple Computer was invented in a garage, but the truly supreme success and fame that should have arrived never came until the last decade. Now he is THE name in computing, as he should have been for dozens of years before.

Jobs is now an American business icon in a way none others have done for a long time. He has a product, a tangible line of things you can display, not just some ephemera such as software suites or less tangible success such as crafty investing of monies. Retiring as he crests the wave of a lifetime of efforts... incredible.

This is truly depressing. We all knew this day had to come, but just like every other day, we wish today wasn't it. Steve, you built this company up 35 years ago in a garage, and you have truely changed my life, both in lifestyle and profession. You will not be forgotten. You will be missed...:apple:

Good luck Steve and I hope you get some distance from work to recover. Was not

He put together a good team so they will do fine I'm sure. He will still be involved in Apple.

Some of the posts on this thread, well didn't surprise me any more than this news did quite frankly.

I'm not a huge fan of sprint either Steve, but don't you think that's going over the deep end!?

I agree. Steve Jobs does more in like two months than most of us in our lifetime. He's an incredible man.

Dumbest comparison ever.

Just stop.

If this is the case, then maybe you shouldn't have posted it. If you knew it would need defending because it was either a) crass or b) just plain wrong, then guess who's being disingenuous?

"user posts faintly-Nazi related opinion and then attempts to explain it."

LOL.

You've been outed, so just live with it.

You are absolutely hilarious.

Then again fourms like these always bring in riff-raff that scrape the bottom of the barrel with pseudo intellectualism. This is what I meant when I said I expected a response characteristic of yours.

In your case, it is even worse because I spelt out the comparison for you and yet you still cling to the same accusation (the military situation for the Axis- not political). You flatter yourself if you really think you've unearthed a thinly veiled fascade or discovered the man behind the curtain.

Perhaps I can make it more palatable for you by using Rome? Ancient Persia? France in 1800?

Anyway, my point is that uou can't be successful forever when your opponents are stacking up against you - particularly when a regime change is taking place.
