Although we may not have wanted to admit it, I think most of us saw this day coming. He did not look well at the last keynote. The photo with his wife was sweet and sad at the same time.

I'm hoping the best for Steve. Leading the charge to save Apple the way he did was nothing short of amazing... No scratch that. It was like "MAGIC".

As far as Tim Cook goes, realistically, he's probably pretty much been running the show for quite a while now and was the logical choice. Apple will be fine under his care.

Steve Jobs took the company that was worth less than a sidewalk turd and turned it into the most valuable company on the planet. This guy deserves his a rest. Thank you for everything, Steve.

Reading that headline was such a shock. I really feel sick. Steve Jobs is an incredible man and a real role-model, both for his work at Apple and for his strength in fighting through health problems that would have crushed a lot of people. I sincerely hope this is not a sign of a further challenge to his health, but rather a decision to remove some of the pressure on himself and focus on getting well and spending time with his family. I very much hope he can and will continue to take an active role in Apple and in Mac development, but not at the expense of his health.

If Steve Jobs thinks that Cook is the best man for the job, then I'm sure he is. And hopefully with Apple as strong as it is now this news, shocking and upsetting as it is, will not cause too much of a knee-jerk reaction that damages the company just when everyone needs to rally to support Cook. And I look forward to seeing what great innovations will come from Cupertino in the weeks, months and years to come.

Most importantly, I really hope Steve Jobs knows how many people are hoping that he is ok, and that he recovers quickly if he is particularly sick at the moment. I hope too that he knows how important he is to so many people, and can take satisfaction from that.

I can't do better than echo the previous posters who have said

Be well Steve!

I feel like the day the Beatles split up......

Sad and hurt..... hoping Steve lives long... to enjoy life.... and know Apple is on the right course... his course. Proud to have witnessed the history Steve Jobs has made with Apple. Bummed to see him step down as CEO.... Can only hope Cook and all at Apple have learned from him. Yes I'm a super Apple Fanboy.... Let us all send groovy vibes to Steve and for the future of Apple. :

This isn't very shocking if you have followed his health condition in recent history.

He will be better in the new position and his body will get some relief.

Good luck Mr. Jobs

I don't know what to say. I'm sure Apple will continue along the same path, but there will always be something missing.

I hope Steve is alright and his health improves, best wishes to him.

And does this mean that Phil Schiller is going to do the keynotes now? I remember the iMac G5 keynote he did, he dosent sell the product nearly as well as Steve does.

Also, at least will still have Johnny Ive, Bob Mansfeild.... With them I'm confident Apple won't change very much.

Bingo. That's exactly right. For the next few years there will be no noticeable difference. A company that large doesn't change overnight.

Like many of you I'm sad because I'm also guessing the health issues have become more taxing in recent months. That being said, I hope he is getting out while he still has some good years to sit back and enjoy the fruits of his labors. No one can discount his value as one of the most influential thinkers of the age of technology. They will be reading about Steve in history books for years to come.

Thank you Steve for all the joy (and toys) you've shared with me. God speed my friend!

It's his health alright... very few would've stayed on the job while battling and/or recovering from cancer. He's the type who wouldn't quit even if he was in a wheelchair and hooked up to a dialysis machine. So... he must be very near the end.

And when it ends... they should update the 'Think Different' commercial and insert Steve among the late greats.

I guess we found out who was responsible for Lion:p
Board members are soulless.
All the best Steve. Because of you I have jobs.

But he was Apple for god sake!! Have a look at where Apple was under Gil Amelio when Jobs left and then what Jobs did at NEXT with the likes of Bertrand Serlet. Apple was failing and then ge came back, and turned Apple around almost straight away.

Have a look at the All Things D interview with him and Gates and just see what Gates says about him. There will never be another Jobs. That's just a fact.

If people think Apple will be the same with Cooke, Federeghi, Schiller, Forestall et al it just won't.

No, he wasn't Apple. Steve was made to leave apple after the original Macintosh products flopped and he got into conflicts with other leaders at the time. After gaining some more experience from NeXT, then Steve brought Apple back to prosperity. I think that Apple leadership have learned their lesson and will continue to manage with Steve's style. Steve Jobs hasn't designed any of their products, and although you could make the argument that he's shut several products down, there is no way that Apple will make a product that he doesn't approve of as long as he is Chairman, which will likely be for years to come. Even though the man is (sort of) gone, the ideas, design philosophy, and management style that made Apple successful will be here to stay.

I second that!

He is DA MAN! and He was probably the MOST successful CEO there has ever been.

die of scarvy tonight.

Are you trying to spell "scurvy", why do you protect some guy you don't even know. So what if he was the leader of some company that "innovates" by stealing other's ideas. That does not make him some sort of god.
