Actually its $99 for the waranty than a $50 deductible for claims involving drop damage but still $149 is better than $199 and the SquareTrade warranty is better than AppleCare in terms of length since you get 2 yrs.

So you think the iPhone committed suicide?

I think getting a new one at 199.99, basically the subsidized price, is a pretty good deal. A non-subsidized one would probably cost 700 or so.

Haha, I really don't know what happened to it.

As stated in everything I posted. I agree and am appreciative that a replacement didn't cost me more than $200 I was charged.

I honestly didn't know what I was looking for other than what was offered to me.

I'm not trying to get anything additional out of any of this either. I've come to terms and am pretty happy to have a replacement phone the next day.

Just thought the overall situation warranted a post especially with Steve's response. Which as stated above, I found humorous.

That is not the route I am going with at all. I would agree with you if I actually dropped it.

It was sitting on my kitchen counter and literally (I'm assuming as I wasn't looking at the phone when it fell) slid off the counter and smashed onto the floor.

Nobody else was near the phone when it happened.

I can't remember if it was slanted sitting on something else or not.

And although it seems like I'm not taking responsibility for my actions, my real complaint is that there is no real help in this situation.

In that case maybe she can help...

I'll bet you can sell the broken one for much more than $200 and end up making a profit out of the whole ordeal.

I would say that the Genius guy who offered a replacement right away for $199.00 was quite a bit of help. I am not saying you're irresponsible or anything. It just looks to me as though Apple try to do what they can to help you, if not Steve Jobs himself. :)

I dropped my iPhone 2G and it shattered. But instead of going on about it, I just bought a new iPhone and the case that I should have had from the beginning to go along with it.

Steve Jobs can't control gravity, much less anyone's fat fingers.

I agree. The Genius was more than nice in the situation. And I'll continue to state my appreciation for what they DID do for me.

Did you buy it with a credit card that offers replacement protection? It might be worth a call to your card company to see if it applies here.

Good luck!

Opened my eyes: my 3G has fallen several times...

I am really sorry for your trouble, I always considered my 3G a real tough device, since it has fallen several times and never had any problems, but some scratches. Will get xtra protection for my 4...

why dont you just buy the SquareTrade warranty ofr $99 or whatever price it is and do a claim and get a new iPhone? Its a 2 yr warranty so even if you just do the one claim it'll still save you money.

ok this is what u do:

buy the squaretrade warranty, value of phone $500 - $99

buy replacement iphone for $199

make claim, pay deductible $50

Now u r out $250 + tax. Sqauretrade will try and talk u into buying a refurb for $199 from apple, stick to your guns and say no, then they will send u a check for $500/600. After u cash ur check u will actually make $250 (minus tax).

its funny how all of you are siding with steve

a phone is not supposed to completely break and be unusable after dropping it one time. Especially after they advertise it being so strong and bendable. bull ****

I drop my blackberry at least once a week and its still in perfect working order.

The iphone 4 is a complete catastrophe and is no longer on the top of its game.

With all due respect, I fail to understand how Apple should in any way be responsible for your mishandling of the phone.

The glass is certainly strong, but this in no way implies that it is unbreakable. Several news sources have stress tested the phone, and have figured out the limit at which it will break. I think that withstanding the types of falls we've seen on videos is pretty impressive. I know that my MBP hasn't been able to handle those types of falls, for example.

It's extremely generous that they offered you a $199 replacement for your phone, so I don't understand where the disappointment is coming from. Ultimately, if Apple took it as policy to somehow compensate people who fail to take care of their products, it would translate to a higher price point.

Accidents happen; I've dropped and broken a fair number of laptops and phones. Do I expect other paying customers to help foot the bill? Of course not.

Well I'm no forensic scientist but that sure doesn't look like a break pattern from a counter top fall, which would usually apprear as one major break with the cracks moving outward from there.

In that picture one can almost make out what would appear to be 4 points of breakage, almost like it was squeezed till the screen shattered..

You sure your "friend" only witnessed it fall and didnt try to see how strong the glass was?

This. Thump on top, fingers on the side. Looks like that to me.

I was smart, I bought mine at Best Buy and got the insurance. If it breaks, ill get a new one free, deductible free! :)

Hopefully when replacement parts are available this can easily be fixed. The phone itself looks fine, just the glass on the front cracked. I had some dust under my 3G and they were able to replace the screen in under 30m.

iPhones that throw themselves off counters (maybe it committed suicide because all the other phones teased it about only being on ATT) and iPads that dent themselves. SO glad I read MR otherwise I wouldn't know about these things.

This is pretty incredible because I didn't know iPhones had maglev. I just tried on my counter top and it didn't "air hockey" it's way off the edge.

Op I'm sorry but this is the funniest thing I've read in a while. How you can even entertain the idea that Apple's advertising claims (which aren't "it's unbreakable!") can absolve you of any responsibility in the event of breakage. I know changed your stance slightly in your later posts but I'm still trying to figure out how you rationalized that one .

Yes and your blackberry doesn't have a touch screen nor does it do half the things the iPhone does. You are comparing apples to oranges. I would like to see you drop this Droid X you speak of and see how well the screen does on that one.

That really sucks to get an answer like that but I guess steve is right. Nothing can really be done. My advice would be to go with paying the money to replace it and then immediately find a bumper or case. It's a shame that it happened but it could happen to anyone really. Good luck with it.

obviously you have not read the confirmed thread about the 200 dollar gift card care of :apple:

Wait. You put your phone in an insecure place, it drops, shatters, and you are disappointed that Apple won't give you a freebie for your irresponsibility? Freaking A. Un-be-lievable.

Even better then that, he emails Steve Jobs about it.

Steve, I can't decide, cereal or waffles this morning?

Jobs should never reply to these guys emails, now every Joe 6 Pack thinks they have a direct line into the head honcho at Apple.
Getting his response to the antenna problem is interesting but asking him for a new phone when you dropped it?
At least make it intelligent and suggest they have reasonable insurance options.

Also, I would kiss the store clerk if he offered me upgrade pricing if I dropped my phone. I would expect to pay $700.

To be honest, the $199 replacement is pretty reasonable considering the unsubsidized cost. Blows big time, but I'd just suck it up if I were you.

And when you get your new one, duct tape it to your hand.

This isn't just good, this is fantastic. At $200, apple is giving you a heck of a deal. Break your phone due to negligence, apple hands you a brand spanking new one for $200 and takes your old one.

Go buy any other from ATT, drop and break it and you have to pay the full retail price to replace it.

This is usually around $400 for crappy phones, all the way to $600-800 for smartphones.

Car insurance is worse. Even if you wreck your car, they just fix it the best they can, they don't buy you a new car. Even if it it totaled you just get a check for the NADA value of the car when it was wrecked (not new).
