well...it is given that the OP should have been more careful...BUT...it sucks that the iPhone was damaged that bad in just one fall!!!! My 3G has fallen many a time but has come out with only minor scratches....

IMO...using glass was probably a bad idea...(as was exposing the antenna to human skin)...

I think I will skip iPhone 4..and wait for iPhone 5 (provided Steve does not replace glass with crystal )

All i can say is HELICOPTER GLASS MY REAREND!!!!!

If this guy was truly in his house when this occurred, then the glass in this new iphone is not what is being advertised.
IMHO it should be stronger than a 3 foot drop to a linoleum floor.

All the breakthrough technology in iPhone 4 is situated between two glossy panels of aluminosilicate glass — the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains. Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever. It’s also recyclable.

Sorry to hear bro, but really, something had to of moved the phone, and if you were near it, it had to be you.

So although you didn't intentionaly drop the phone, or where knowingly touching the phone at all, it fell and broke, which is not covered by warranty.

Plus, a kitchen counter top is usually higher then five feet off the ground, thats a pretty nice drop!

Your just SOL man, pay the 200 and get a case too!

Seriously though guys this iPhone does slide easily off a lot of surfaces so be very careful. I leave it on my nightstand when asleep and if it is anywhere near the edge it's on the floor when I wake up...luckily my room is carpeted.. Can't wait to get a case for this phone to nullify this problem completely

They never said it was shatter-proof.

Did you buy it with AMEX? They cover accidental damage for 90 days from purchase date.

LOL Insurance fraud? Are u kidding me? Squaretrade isn't an insurance company. Furthermore, doing what I suggested is perfectly legal and within the terms of the warranty contract.

The "warranty contract" states that you can file a claim for damage that happens before the policy is in effect?

Ya ok. Keep trollin' man, it suits you well.

Good god. What the f--- is with people acting like complete klutzes and expecting Apple to cover their dumb a--es? I don't understand what's gotten into people.

Be careful with your purchase! Why do you have this expectation that there's a free insurance policy with your property?

Spoiled child syndrome, seriously.

You threw your phone onto a hard surface. You need to not be so careless. End of story, man.

You know, for people who say, "It is glass, what do you expect?"

Well, I expect that for a small portable object that will easily get dropped they use materials that can at least take some abuse (my old iphone got dropped on concrete and other hard surfaces several times and it still works and hte screen is in perfect condition).

While it's nifty that the phone has glass front and back (and probably more environmental than plastic), if they can't make it so that it can't take a few drops, they shouldn't use glass for almost all the case. Yeah, plastic scratches and maybe cracks, but that's still more usable than a phone with a very shattered glass back (and/or front. It seems plastic on the back of my iphone tends to take the impact better and keep my glass from breaking. Or, the glass they uesd on the old iphones takes impact better!).

Plus, they advertised it implying that it was tough. Meaning they led people to believe this glass could take drops (to probably alleviate people like me who were like, what, you want to make it made of all material that does not take drops well? That sounds like a bad idea!). Shoot, I fell for the hype hoping maybe they found glass that was as tough as using plastic for the shell.

So, yeah, I do think people have a gripe when the phone falls once and it shatters. They shouldn't make the phone out of it if hte material can't even handle a few drops. I'm not saying that it should be abused, but get realistic. It's a small phone that people carry in their hands and move around a lot. there is a high chance it will get dropped at least once (if not a few times) in its life.

To be honest, replies like that come across, regardless of the intention, as arrogant and rude. If he hasn't got time to expand a little more on a one word answer then he should just not reply, or employ a secretary to reply on his behalf.

I know it's a 'no bulls*it', honest response but it is beyone awful for this kind of tone to come from the e-mails of a company's CEO. The original e-mail was more than courteous and deserved the same in return.
It's not arrogant, the dude dropped his phone and wants a freebie, from Steve of all people.

Or maybe you think my post is arrogant and rude. Well, I'm sure it is. There's still NO freebies for the OP who is completely at fault here.

They never said it was shatter-proof.

Did you buy it with AMEX? They cover accidental damage for 90 days from purchase date.

Nope, no they didn't. They were smart. But they sure implied that it was a tough material that could handle some abuse (one small fall shouldn't really be considered heavy abuse). But hey, implying isn't saying it so when some thing like this happens they can claim they never actually said it was shatter-proof.

These guys dropped the phone 4 times on concrete to get it to break: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7-OBoDFeDY

I can't say I love the idea of a dual glass phone because it's twice as likely to break. But the 3G was also dropped 5 times in a similar video to test out how durable it was before it broke. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkXlriABfOo

So in my opinion, short of anyone willing to do more torture testing on video, it's holding up pretty good considering it has two breakable screens now instead of one.

So you phone was just sitting there and then it slid off of the counter??? There was this fellow once names Newton who had these "laws." I believe one of them was; An object at rest stays at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. Maybe since no one was touching the lower left hand corner the antenna was receiving such good reception that the radio waves pushed it off the counter. But hey what do I know I am not a physicist, I just play one on T.V. :D

so you are Sheldon Cooper?

As I noted in another thread, as I'm sitting here reading the night's postings and hubbub, I find it incredibly ironic that a cheap plastic cup I got from 7-11 earlier today (Iron Man 2 ftw!) with Pepsi in it is technologically more capable of absorbing the fall and impact from my desktop (about 3' high) to the carpeted floor in my apartment without sustaining any physical damage than the iPhone 4 sitting beside it is.

I'd knock the phone off to test it but, since it's going to be returned I'll deal with it.

20x stiffer and 30x stronger apparently doesn't mean much in the real world but, inside The Reality Distortion Field, hell man that's tougher than Adamantium... :D

Yes and your blackberry doesn't have a touch screen nor does it do half the things the iPhone does. You are comparing apples to oranges. I would like to see you drop this Droid X you speak of and see how well the screen does on that one.

Well, apples to blackberries, but they're all fruit. :apple:

WOW! That's some serious shatter! Mine was shattered, as well. I left it on my lap in my car, forgot about it, got off my car and off it went onto the pavement. The shatter wasn't this bad, though.

Fortunately Best Buy is swapping it out for me when they get their next shipments of iPhones in. No fee has been mentioned so far. They only would charge me $100 if I wanted to swap my 16 for a 32, since their 32's would be shipped earlier than the next batch of 16's.

At least the Boss replied.

It's a bummer about your phone sir/m'am. Honestly I know it sucks.

It was worth a shot, and the worst that could have happened was he would ignore it. I find it uniquely satisfying to know that if I really have something to say to Mr. Jobs he will in fact read it and maybe reply to it.

A company the size off Apple would require no apologies if their honcho didn't respond. He did. Kudos to Steve, and good luck with your new phone when you get it. You can always add a line and get another phone at the reduced price.

The ironic thing is....

As I was reading this post, there's a banner ad right at the bottom of this thread advertising iPhone insurance plans and screaming IPHONES BREAK!!!.

Thought that was pretty funny. It sucks that the OP had his phone break, but I have to concur with everyone else. It's not Apple's responsibility once the phone leaves the store and you are using it. Would you try to take a car back to the dealer if you ran into a pole with it? No? Then why do people expect the manufacture to "do something" about a broken phone?

I note everyone's having a dig at the OP. However this phone does move more than the previous. Whilst I'm sat on my arse watching the tele, I usually stick my phone on top of the CD rack next to my sofa and have done for years. Not had a problem with any previous iPhones. However I noticed when I received a text yesterday (my iPhone 4 was on vibrate), the phone moved about 4 inches and nearly fell off, luckily I saw it. Its now got a new home. Its one slippery sod

why dont you just buy the SquareTrade warranty ofr $99 or whatever price it is and do a claim and get a new iPhone? Its a 2 yr warranty so even if you just do the one claim it'll still save you money.

I just bought 2 warranties from them, and there is a discount code on another thread that gives 35% off..... total about $80 for the 2 year warranty.

It covers accidental damage.

Good thing the $3000 of MBP pro insurance (2 laptops) and the $1000 of iPhone insurance (2 iPhones) I have through my bank costs me a whopping $12/year...and that even covers if I spill or break them myself.

hazaaa. actually after reading through all of these posts on people telling the OP that it was actually his fault. i thought it was a bit harsh to be honest. so i decided to try and find an explanation.

now i don't have a video camera, but i tried to recreate his 'fall', however in somewhat more safe conditions. i can conclude as well that, like the OP stated, the phone just slides off. i tried it on my kitchen counter. i just set my phone down, and watch it for a few minutes. you can replicate the same test, by placing the phone on the top of the iphone 4 box. and it will just slide off. i noticed this on the day i got it, when the phone kept falling off the top for some reason and making me jump, but only now am i able to draw the comparisons between the two situations.

I just put some Ghostbuster's slime on mine, played some Jackie Wilson, and I swear it danced itself right off the counter. Is that covered?
