Come on, guys! They've pulled ahead!

It's the new Apple - in 4½ days a thread on an Iphone 4 with a fixed antenna gets more replies than a six month old thread about a missing capability in Apples and Apple OSX.

Microsoft must really love this change of emphasis....

Jeebus, just euthanize this thread and put it out of its misery.

Just unsubscribe - very simple solution.

That's a scary thought... Can you imagine if the only Macs were 11", 13" and 15" MacBook Airs?

Next to go: Mac Pro. Buried next to the XServe.
"But I need a server." => Mac Mini Server
"But I need a Pro comp." => Mac Mini

Regardless, it saves me a trip to Apple Store or waiting for Amazon to deliver my applications. Now I can have them instantly - like my movies.
Unless the app is small I wouldn't say you get them instantly. I've downloaded Adobe's suite on a couple of occasions and while it was convenient because it allowed me to keep working on other things the 5-6gig download took a while. If I would've needed the app in a timely fashion it would have been significantly faster for me to drive to a store and buy a boxed copy. With that being said I live in an area where running out to buy software like that isn't a big deal.

That's most certainly the way it is going. But I think that's more of an industry trend as a whole and not just Apple. Ol' Steve is just paving the way for everyone else.

So sorry but, the morbid posts of late (along with the earlier junk about hitler, fascists, etc.), don't depend on whether i'm "subscribed" or not. This is one miserable thread, all on its own.

But thanks anyway.

Yes... there are worthy posts here and there. But it seems that some are bent on making this thread a vehicle with which to push the envelope of tasteless twitter. [ironically —instead of rallying folks to the 'cause' —it simply serves to make moderate readers much less sympathetic to their plight. It even becomes increasingly more compelling to hope that BD never comes built inside any Mac, if only to prolong the discomfort it would give to the source(s) of such scurrilous pursuits. Seriously, the perceived purpose of this thread seems to run counter to any of the (self-professed) "BD-lovers" claims.]

It's just a gut feeling. The iOS store is only through apple - and thus, only through their censors and approval process. The Mac OS is becoming more like iOS which we can all see in previews of 10.7.

I offer no proof other than what Apple has done and appears to be doing in their own software demos.

The two are entirely different paradigms hence your fears are unwarranted.

Let's not pretend you or I are a metric for people as a whole.

Ok, I'll use my sister, Jane Sixpack, as an example - she's used her iMac drive even less than I have.

Even then I will not be against Steve Jobs offering the option for BD in the MBA's for those that still want it.

Only seems that way to the ranks of the clueless who:

1. Haven't understood the need from day one
2. Refuse to believe anyone who clearly states they have a need
3. Will NEVER understand the need and clearly are only here to troll.

Just your name alone tells anyone all they'd need to know about your state of mind in coming here in the first place.

Good luck downloading Logic or FCS... INSTANTLY. (As if.)

Anyone who doesn't see that this is going to seriously degrade the quality of Apple Pro Apps and other REAL software is truly clueless.

How is this going to happen?

Downloading pro apps will be done at the stores with their high-speed broadband connections (just hope the store's not inundated with teens on Facebook...).

While you're there - download a few 720p "HD" movies as well... ;)

Look, Ma, no optical drive... :D

Oh, how I wish you could quell my fears. I really do. It's been rehashed over and over what Apple has been doing to make the pro-market nervous or just plain switch to Linux or Windows.

The iOSification of the mac is one reason among many.

If you don't believe that Apple is going to dump/is dumping the pro market, then we must do entirely different types of work with our computers. This is not meant as an insult or to belittle what you do.

I stand corrected. If your (fictional) sister doesn't use her optical drive, then neither does the rest of the world.

With my connection, it's probably what I would have to do! Driving to a store to download movies and apps sounds like the exact problem digital distribution was supposed to solve. ;)

Downloads are supposed to make things quicker and easier but your idea is slower and more complicated. How is that solution better than buying the software in a box and loading it from a DVD?

there are like 5 people who care about watching blu rays on a computer. the rest of us have common sense and want to leave them at home.

i like physical media but don't want to carry it around. i used to take my CD's to the field in the army and they all got scratched up

+1

***tangent warning***

Somebody intimated they would hate to have to download pro applications on today's broadband.

I used to download entire pro applications and updates from Adobe, from time-to-time, on a 56K modem back in the 90's. You make due. I also remember when OS updates went to download-only; many people had conniptions at first ("But I don't have Internet!" LOL). Eventually, even they accepted the inevitable.

Besides, any professional worth their salt should have plenty of other work to keep them occupied until the download is complete (even if they are on the most sluggish of DSL connections).

P.S. If the thought of high-speed Internet scares you, find a nice bunker, and we'll come get you when it's safe to come out. Probably.
