i think both blu ray and dvd will coexist for some time. due to the physical disc compatibility there isn't a huge motivation to drop the predecessor like there was going from tapes say to cd. those that want a higher image will get the blu ray on their hi def tv's and those that are content with dvd will stick with that and not see a need to upgrade. i dont think dvd has to die necessarily for blu ray to have a successful future.

only when 1080p sets are standard and blu ray players are the only devices that are made will dvd's probably be phased out. but that's a long way from happening, as there's a lot of people who are still using tube tv's where dvd is fine and blu ray is irrelevant and will probably skip the whole first phase of widespread flat panel adoption, and only upgrade when their set eventually dies a few years down the road.

"only when 1080p sets are standard and blu ray players are the only devices that are made will dvd's probably be phased out."

Sadly, even then there is no guarantee the public is going to rush into the arms of Blu-Ray. Considering the fact that of people with HDTVs, only around 10% actually watch HD content on their sets (and that percentage hasn't risen much since 2007), BD's 1080p picture quality is not turning into a magic pill convincing everyone to rush out and make the jump. I believe Hollywood should have gone for something more convincing than BD's 1,080 lines of vertical resolution, say something with approximately 4,000 pixels of horizontal resolution like 4K.

Apple shares the blame

the fact that apple uses c2d isnt really their fault, but more a problem between intel and nvidia - which will be fixed soon in the next revision of 13"s :)

Actually, it was known that there were legal issues around NVIDIA being able to make a chipset for the Core i* series before the Core i* was released, and before Apple went to NVIDIA chipsets in the systems.

Apple took a chance that Intel and NVIDIA would come to a deal, and lost.

Here's an article from August 2008 that discusses the legal aspects (link).

Here's a discussion about the legal issue in the MacRumours thread where the rumour of an NVIDIA chipset surfaced (link).

The Steve is being really retarded these days... There's literally thousands of people demanding Blue-ray and thousands of people demanding FireWire but he doesn't listen to his userbase. The guy is seriously driving me crazy. I don't give a damn about thin laptops, or even blue-ray- but when the people want something, doesn't it make sense to give them something they'll buy?

Steve thinks no one will use Blue-Ray or Firewire in the future, therefore the Macs of today don't need it. Sadly, they won't even live that long to see it.

If apple doesn't introduce Blu-Ray models in the next run of model releases, i am going to buy a top of the line Vaio laptop.

Blu-ray on laptops are not about wanting to watch HD on a mini screen, it about being able to watch a disc you own, rent or what not. Apple doesn't like the competition with itunes. they want to push their closed systems where they make more money.

this is sad, Apple is becoming more closed than Microsoft was when they had more of a monopoly.

MCP99 rumors rolled around for quite some time.

I wonder how that 95% feels now.

Tons of Computers Still Infected With Conficker Worm, Apparently
http://gizmodo.com/5745533/tons-of-computers-still-infected-with-conficker-worm-apparently

I feel great. My work machine is ridiculously fast and I have seen MASSIVE jumps in viewport performance in C4d and Maya. Especially C4d.

I hate, hate, hate windows. But I can't argue with my significant jumps in performance. When I want to use a computer on my free time that just works, I use a mac.

When I have heavy work to do, then I turn to the PC.

Billion-dollar companies don't stay that big by betting their future on rumours. ;)

Apple made a bet, and lost. Now they have to pay for it.... (And there's also the empty promise of OpenCL in the mix.)
I believe it might have even hit silicon but never outside of nVidia's own doors. It is somewhat odd to see Apple get backed into the same corner with nVidia.

You're right, Apple is crying all the way to the bank - especially now with Verizon getting the iPhone.
You can not make everyone happy but you can at least make the most profitable segment happy. And no, I do not know what that segment is.

Does that apply when in flight with laptop on the tray table in front of me? Will I need to bring a riser in my carry on (I am a tall guy)?
Do you wonder why nobody else doesn't even bother to answer this?

Does your eye's resolving power apply in flight?
What next?
Does gravity exist if using appleTV?

Yeah... Steve doesn't really do that anymore. By "that" I mean add things.

I know what he wants for the portable line. No ports, no optical disk slot, hidden vents - it won't even have a magsafe port because it will charge on an inductive mat. Headphone port? Bluetooth. Ethernet? Wireless. USB for flash drives? Nope, in the cloud. :(

Hopefully, Steve will soon be in the cloud. Then Apple can finally do what it should have done years ago.

Hey, now that Steve Jobs has temporarily left the building, now they can slip in bluray drives on Macs!

I'd love a Bluray-writer for my iMac. So much capacity! Could really do with that for backups and work. Would be better than sending packages of 5xDVD9 all the time!

When Steve has left the planet, probably.

EVEN IDIOTS WILL NOT LONG BUY TOP OF THE LINE COMPUTERS FROM TOY PHONEMAKERS.

And you can quote me on that.

hopefully he wont be around much longer then we'll all get what we need.

While I've advocated for firing Jobs and think that this latest leave may do Apple a lot of good - I think that it's crossing a line that we should not cross to wish for his demise.

I hope that Steve has quite a few years still with us, and that he has a "Melinda Gates" change of heart and decides that he can do more for humanity than creating shiny, expensive toys.

Seriously not cool. I want Blu-ray on the mac and have disagreed with Jobs on many decisions, but wishing someone dead so you might possibly get some technology the way you want is just sick and offensive. Get some perspective will you?

Get well soon Steve Jobs.

Well, the public has spoken, no physical media for them, they prefer downloads (I guess most haven't experienced "The Kindle Syndrome"...)

No. DVD sales are down, Blu-ray sales are up. Physical sales still account for more than sales of downloads.

I'd like Jobs to let someone else handle the Macs, but Jobs' level of compromise (ie. none) for the iPhone works well. I do want a phone that's sleek and light without bloatware.

Jobs is very much a two-edged sword. He has arguably the best business sense of any CEO in the world (for better or for worse), and I'd imagine keeps a lot of bad ideas from happening.

I don't know what to think. We definitely need more leniency in tech/ports making it to the Mac, and allowing more things to make the iTunes App store, but it is nice to also have some resistance to stop the user experience becoming like Linux or Android.

Seriously?!!

Props to everyone (no matter where they fall on the BD debate) condemning some of the most crass and disgusting statements I have ever seen in a forum.

As for the reprobates, stay classy. Rest assured, there's a special level of hell reserved just for you.

Hopefully, one day we will ALL be in the cloud. And pain free.

As opposed to being in a fiery pit elsewhere.

Or nowhere.

Shame on you.

Shame on you.

Words cannot express the disgust I have for hearing comments like that. What kind of person wishes ill will on another human being? (No answer needed.)

Speak for yourself please. I don't plan on being in either place. Seriously, enough already. If you are that miserable divest your Macs and move on. I find your comments offensive and don't appreciate them.

Don't worry, you're not alone. Just do as I did and add him to your ignore list. Then you don't have to be bothered by them unless someone else quotes him.

No compromises?
I think iP4 is design/qualitywise so bad, that if it would be the first iP, Apple wouldn't have the success they now have.
Dual glass enclosure is the weakest (ie. breaks easiest) in the market.

Antennagate was simply amazing feat of PR; by saying that all phones have attenuation they got away with the worst attenuation in the market.
Latest news are that you cannot use iP4 in winter (ie. below 0 °C).

HAHA...This thread lolol is STILL alive and going, huh?

Personally, I love my iPhone 4 and I love the glass on both sides. It feels great in my hands and I like to hold it with two fingers and flip it back and forth. It's so thin. And so gorgeous. I've dropped it twice where the impact was pretty bad since I bought it in July of last year and nothing happened. I think the bumper may have saved it one of the times when it fell flat on its face.

Regarding Antennagate, I honestly tried to re-create the problem and I have not been able to. I'm not even a Mac fanboy, although I love my 27" iMac and I *did* have problems with TWO of those (screen flickering on one, audio issue on another) but I ended up getting a hefty discount on the third, so I guess it's "all good" :D

Blu-ray and Flash. Anything else?

Yes, DVD and CD burner/reader/player...I don't want ANY optical drive and for the two times I put a DVD into my "Superdrive", I'd rather have a 2nd SSD or hard drive, instead of that stupid and humongous optical drive.

That's why I like what it says on MacBook Air section of Apple's website. "The future of MacBooks". I hope they follow through and make the optical drives OPTIONAL, such as is the case with the Mac mini. ;-)
