That is possibly the most ridiculous line of garbage anyone ever posted here, and that's saying something.

Yeah, movie studios trying like hell to NOT got the way of extinct record companies ARE TO BLAME FOR PEOPLE STEALING.

People either have the ethics TO NOT STEAL, or they DON'T and STEAL. Do not blame companies fighting for their lives despite ridiculous profits. Record companies made ridiculous profits too in the 70's and they will be completely gone within a decade, and has pop music gotten a shred better? Not a bit. Beiber and Gaga. Wowie.

Stealing makes everything worse, and just WAIT to what it does to the QUALITY of motion pictures. When there's no money, like in the early 70's prior to Star Wars which was a gamechanger, movies devolve into low budget garbage.

Steal all you want, but take the responsibility along with it of destroying whatever it is you're stealing.

And let not anyone DARE blame companies trying to protect their investments FROM theft, FOR their theft. "The devil made me do it" indeed.

:apple:

This diagram does speak volumes about Pirated Movies vs Paid ones, Companies really need to stop crap like this, basically punishing the paying customers, about Piracy, when they clearly havent done it, because they're watching the purchased movie.

It should just be, the movie.

sory what does Pirated Movies have to do with this?

What's your point? Is this still about cash? Because none of those are cash balances. The statement above of $60b in cash reserves is a poor implication, but the number is accurate. They have $27b in cash/equivalents as of 12/31/10 (the most recent reporting date), with LT investments of $32b. This data comes from their public filings, they are a publicly traded company, and required to accurately present this data to the world. I pulled it from Yahoo Finance.

If you're going to start talking about financial data, you'd better have some clue what you are talking about, or you'll just appear idiotic. Frankly, from your posts about both computers and Apple financials, it sounds like you read some news once in 1999 and then again in 2009 and think nothing has changed.

Okay explain to me what I posted in bold Operating income US$ 18.39 billion (FY 2010

Is that not the money needed to keep the apple going mow just to make, test and sale ?

So to make ,test and sale blu ray going cost ?? billion

When we understand this we can move on.

So to make ,test and sale blu ray and pay licence fee ??? billion + to make, test and sale other stuff they are doing now 18.39 billion = ??? billion ?

Just check the Best buy ,radio shack ,staples ,office store and futureshop web site also tigerdirect you not going get computer under $1,000 that has a blu ray .

Note I cannot post link to web site has the spam filter would block it here. May be a member that has higher post count can post link.

I'm just saying and PC I seen that has blu ray is over $1,000

Not true.
There are some Sony and HP laptops in the $599-$699 price range that comes with a Blu-Ray drive:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Laptop-D...X7CQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303200420&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-d...2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1303200585&sr=1-2

http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-d...9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1303200585&sr=1-9

Blu-Ray is no longer a "premium" option as it was back in 2007-2008, when a BD equipped PC was as expensive as a Mac.

I was replying to a guy who was talking about how movie companies are doing everything they can to stop movie pirating.

I was just showing the sheer ammount of crap and pointless warnings people have to sit through even though they've bought a legal copy.

It would not hurt anyone to add it as an option.

OPTION!

Download as 720p or 1080p or both.

I will decide what is the best for my needs, thanks Stevie for your concern but no. I don't like people telling me what is best for myself. It does not hurt anything to add it as an option.

I would love a hi-def movie on those amazing apple screens.

When I pick up the Best Buy flyer, around half the movies are advertised on blu-ray, either just Blu-ray or a combo pack. Actually, I take that back, looking at the flyer right now, all the movies on the first page of the movie section are Blu-ray, Blu-ray combo pack, or have Blu-ray ($19.99) underneath the DVD version (they are available in blu-ray format as well). The movies are Narnia, Die another day, speed, training day, heat, town, mission impossible, inception, the a team, the incredibles, cars, country strong, tron, and heavy metal. Just listing them, yes I know some are quite old and I have no idea why they are on this page in the first place. Resolution UFC is only available on DVD and there is a just DVD version of Narnia available elsewhere on the page. The second page is very similar.

So to say Blu-ray is not popular is not true. Forgot to add, there is a sale on the first page "save $5 on select Blu-ray titles when you trade in any DVD!" This is the Canadian flyer good from April 8 to April 14.

The disks themselves are more expensive than the DVD version but the gap is not that large.

Apple would have to lose its mind to put blu-ray players in a tablet, This would take up almost the entire case. I mean...come on...most netbooks, which are much larger than the ipad don't have optical drives.

There should be options to these devices, if I want it I can get it, if you don't want it then you don't have to get it. This really is a good approach.

You've gone from claiming Apple couldn't even have $1b in cash to claiming that they should easily have been able to spend many billions to license BD.

Once we understand what on earth you are trying to say, perhaps we can "move on". You should slow down a little to formulate some of these responses.

If you want to understand finances, I'd recommend a class. I'm not going to teach it in this thread, though. Here: http://www.accountingcoach.com/online-accounting-course/60Xpg01.html

If you are still interested in their cash situation, tomorrow they announce the latest details.

170 million BDs shipped in all of 2010.

343 million DVDs shipped in Q4 2010 alone.
So,
are you suggesting that when bd shipments are bigger than dvd shipments, it's time for apple to change their dvd offerings to bd?
(This might happen as soon as 2013 and definitely before digital downloads get biggest.)

I also don't like the idea that apple can cancel authorization anytime for any content purchased from itunes.
I'm not saying that they will, but they have the power.
When I purchase a hard copy of a content, nobody can stop me using it.

You could just use VLC player it can play blu ray.

I think apple is not going to do any thing yet just like the TV shows are hard to get in blu ray .Blu ray is more for movies and PC's now. When more people get blu ray and the cost goes down than shows like X-files ,star trek ,NCSI,CSI ,law and order,outer-limits,bones ,house MD ,stargate,24 so on will jump on it and most 80% of the TV shows no more than 25 years old will be in blu ray.

If the Companies cough up the money to go through the TV shows and get them to blu ray .

Since when?

I am laughing so hard right now at all the Apple haters and "industry plants" after seeing another record quarter by Apple. 3.76 million Macs without BD were sold!

The reality is people prefer quality machines like Macs (and are willing to pay extra or the so called "Apple tax" for it) over all the garbage HP, Dell's, and VAIO's running ever so buggy Windows with their BD players built in. LOL!!

That doesn't mean that Macs wouldn't be better products if they had Blu Ray.

This lame argument again, really? Do you really, actually, genuinely think Apple would have sold fewer macs if a Blu-ray option had existed for them? Please explain how that works if so.

Having blu ray is luxury now well in 10 or 15 years it it will be mandatory well we chase the next Dragan better than 1080P.

But keep in mind that they would still have sold record numbers even if they were selling non functional hollow aluminum boxes.

Two of the crown jewels in my Blu-Ray collection are TV series (Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek: TOS Remastered).

First, not all TV series are worthy of a high def transfer and not all of them can have one. If they are shot in film, then it works out great, because all they need is a re-transfer and viola, high definition! If they're shot on video tape, you're out of luck, it's standard def and that's that.

Secondly, understand that with a new format it takes time to do a proper release -- in other words, you can't expect everything ever put out on older formats to instantly show up on the new format, at least not without a corresponding jump in quality. There are things on LaserDisc and VHS that still haven't made it to DVD.

Especially if the shows in question were not shot with HDTV in mind and weren't mastered on film (i.e. they used video tape) -- there just isn't the quality to justify anything greater than DVD and that's also why you won't see them in high definition anywhere else either -- TBS and TNT are (in)famous for broadcasting upconverted stretch-vision(tm) on their HD channels. Star Trek is just such a case, where the live action stuff was shot on film and the special effects were done on video tape. With a little cleanup the film looks like it was shot yesterday, but all the special effects look like garbage, so they took a few years to create new effects, and thankfully they're optional so you can still see the original effects for purity. That's what's holding up TNG, the same issue of the live action shot on film but the effects done to tape. That problem is pretty universal for any sci-fi shot before 2000, I'd say.

Thirdly, understand that studios prioritize what gets new transfers by priority -- new stuff and highly popular old stuff comes first, naturally. If a show is still in production, or spans the switch to HDTV, it's fully natural to just start releasing new seasons in HD and get back to the older ones later (such is the case with House, Bones, CSI, 24). Even The Simpsons and South Park are releasing new seasons in Blu-Ray.

Now, as to your specific shows:
  • X-Files: If the last movie did better maybe there would be interest, but I think this dead horse stays dead. Further, it seems to have the Star Trek problem of being mastered on video tape. Linky. Fox would have to spend some money to remaster the effects for film, which I wouldn't hold my breath.
  • Star Trek: It is available in a glorious box set, I have it. Linky.
  • NCIS: No idea, but the last season isn't even out on DVD yet.
  • CSI: The 1st and 9th seasons are out on Blu-Ray
  • Law and Order: No idea, there's 21 years of material and umpteen spinoffs. Heck, the entire original series isn't even out on DVD.
  • Outer Limits: Twilight Zone is already on Blu-Ray, Outer Limits may follow. It is a 1963 series and it took it years to show up on DVD. Plus, it's owned by MGM which has bankruptcy problems holding up everything, including the latest Bond movie.
  • Bones: On Blu-Ray since season 4
  • House: On Blu-Ray since season 6
  • Stargate: Same problem as Star Trek -- video tape.
  • 24: On Blu-Ray since season 7.

See, things aren't quite so dire.

As for the series that have only later seasons available? Who knows if they'll go back and redo the old ones. Maybe, maybe not. Once again, it goes to demand and priorities.

.

+1 to Battlestar Galactica. The updated Cylon ships and centurions are pretty sweet! Number 6 is not too shabby either.

Thanks to Netflix and Apple TV I got hooked on the new BG series this year. I am currently on Season 3. Its great having all the seasons on screen and a click away. No discs to fumble with or waiting for them to arrive in the mail.

linux2mac loves instant gratification and hates waiting! Thats why I love my Macs - they instantly work unlike "some" other "third-rate" software/hardware companies. :D
