In what sense is the PS3 a success?

It has lost a vast amount of money for Sony. The Playstation division of Sony has been consistently losing money since the introduction of the PS3.

And one of the reasons for the commercial failure was the problems that BluRay brought to the platform. It made the PS3 expensive and late to market.

I am not sure why Apple should duplicate anything that Sony does. Sony dug a deep hole, and then jumped in. It's not too smart to copy them.

C.

you've got a decently priced bluray player with definite firmware upgrades and the option for the occasional game if the user likes the look of it. sony may be losing slightly but i bet you now that nintendo will be the next to lose in the console war...

I disagree - at the distance most people sit from their TV, and given the size of that TV, people can't distinguish between 720p and 1080i (or p), nor, I believe between the high bit rate of local content and lower bit rate of streamed content. There is a limit to that, of course - hulu looks horrid compared to iTunes - but iTunes looks really, really good. Again, given the size of the screen and the distance from it.

ITunes @ 720p fits most people's needs nicely. I just wish you could rent TV, as I hate to keep buying all this TV video.

You must be blind! I've got 4 HD TV's in the house, from 23", up to 61" and can EASILY spot the difference between the picture quality of an upscaled DVD vs a good Blu ray movie on any of those TV's. I'm shaking my head in disbelief that anyone who has vision good enough to post a message online actually made the comments that you just posted. Unbelievable.

i'm not even going to go near the whole bluray/mac argument, but the only reason i bought the ps3 was for playtv and bluray. i own ONE ps3 game (the wonderful heavy rain), the rest are far superior on the 360, so i buy the xbox version....

What??? You don't have MW2?? You can't have a PS3 and not have that game! :)

you know, the top quality is not the issue for me. it's the whole "i have a bluray disc, i cant take it away with me to watch my favourite tv show/movie" is the issue..

i've heard about it, havent gotten around to getting it yet. that's the question again. is it any better on ps3 or 360? is live or playstation network better??

I've never owned a 360 but I've heard their network is more reliable. I have good and bad days when playing MW2. Nothing sucks more than when I'm winning a game and I get a 'server timed out' error. Or "host migration failed". Grrr! the game is so immersive/addictive, it's the only game I play online. I own COD4 and both Resistance games and both Motorstorm games. MW2 is head a shoulders better than those games, IMO. MW2 sales have been phenomenal. oh, and I'm retirement age! I started gaming nearly 3 years ago. It took me about 3 days to get used to the PS3 controls, but it's all good now. :)

hah! i'm more of a fan of single player rpgs, myself. last week i finished red dead redemption and im getting through the dragon age expansions.

They're indentical in terms of software, but the PS3 has a different Gamma correction so the colours look different.

The Xbox Live and PSN network are both filled with 5 year olds swearing at the top of their lungs, so just decide if you want to pay for that.

The PS3 has a different gamma setting than the 360. The 360 gamma is non-linear, which means that you lose some color information (near blacks and near whites are crushed out to black or white) but you get a more dynamic image. The PS3 (on standard settings) has a linear gamma curve, which means that it retains more color information, but the image looks more flat.

Developers usually ignore this, simply because it's not entirely possible, nor all that useful to try to fix it. Every TV has different contrast and brightness settings, and different characteristics, which means that trying to make a game look "the same" gamma and color-wise is just a waste of time, considering it takes users all of five seconds to adjust their display to fit their preference.

Do you not have those brands in Australia?
yes, we do. but mainly in non-rechargables. the Energizer ones are the best going around in that market - ive never looked into the rechargable ones. it was a legit question, and how do they compare to Enloopes?

And more importantly, wtf does it have to do with Blu-ray on a Mac?
Remotes take batteries.
i couldnt help but laugh at that :) sorry for OTness

blu-ray is more powerful, hence it is the future.
more powerful? how so? do you mean it "looks better" ? either way, bluray isnt "more powerful", bluray is just the medium that holds the video.

Yes both.

I use eneloop rechargable AA batteries in my Logitech mouse, the only Apple extra I got was a new KB for my G5, I went for the full wired one as I need the num pad and don't need a wireless KB.

Back to the topic... Apple is doing it's old trick off releasing an updated iMac (much faster by all accounts) but also to distract us from the lack of BluRay they bring out some more toys, I'm not sure how useful the touch pad will be outside of a few programs like iPhoto.

I don't see why blu ray (or DVD movies for that matter) and internet streaming services have to be mutually exclusive. Both serve different audiences. And there are plenty of people who love blu ray movies but also do some netflix on the side. The fact that there are blu ray players (ps3 included) that support netflix out of the box should make this pretty obvious.

Personally, I don't like online distribution. Can't sell, can't loan, DRM, etc. I have to sacrifice too many rights as a consumer only to gain local storage in return. And even with a physical copy, I can still rip it to my hard drive, so even that one advantage is nullified. Instant gratification? It takes me less time to drive to the store and buy or rent a blu ray than downloading.

AFAIK Enloopes aren't sold in NZ. The only brand I've had enough use with to compare to the energisers is the generic DSE branded ones. They paled in comparison to energiser, lasted half as long.

BluRay -> BluRay Player -> Player Remote -> Batteries.

Perfectly on Topic. :D

Gawd, still feel sick from eating an entire large pizza.

I totally agree. When I'm looking at buying a DVD/BR the first thing I check is the extras, one of the reason I'm yet to get a copy of Avatar. If I was to rent a DVD then I can do that for less than the iTunes and watch it on a proper TV without having to get something like the Apple TV.

iTunes works great for music but right now it's not my choice for movies or TV.

Steve we just want the option to spec a new iMac with BluRay!

note to self, dont buy anything DSE from now on ;)

we wont need a remote for the mac though :p we will be sitting at the computer :D void.

You actually bought went into a DSE store? Go to JBHiFi man.
you kiwis speak in riddles. huh? ive been using Duracell rechargables lately, but my last set lasted a week (never turn off mouse) - my first energizer pair lasted 2 months!)

There's the apple remote, rechargeable button batteries.
wow didnt know u could get rechargables of them - damn you :p
