As sad as this is for him, he is not El Cid. Some of you act like it is the end of the world. I'm going to burry a very fine colleague this Saturday (he died of colon cancer) and that saddens me more. Before we know it, Steve is declaired a saint.

Why did you have to bring that in?

Come on...and Steve is a saint to the Apple community. He saved the company and turned it around and brought out some amazing products.

He plays Segway Polo. The man is probably more active than Steve Jobs.

And he eats meat, so...

Eats meat? Last time I saw a picture of him he looked like he'd swallowed a whole sheep.

And as far as the Segway goes? He does EVERYTHING on that, he probably hasn't taken a step in years.

Be good to see Woz do a Keynote and just zoom in on a Segway.

Get well Steve!

This year is the first year that I've missed a Macworld keynote since Steve came back. It just wouldn't be the same. Shortly after Steve returned I bought 2,000 shares of AAPL for $14. I still hold those shares and don't intend to sell them. I believe in all the fine people at Apple and what they will do. Steve is my hero and whom I model by business life after. As an interactive design firm owner, I live a mac life. We even have a Lisa to prove it! My shares are down but Apple is not. I hope Steve can regain his health and kick some more MS ass!

Most of all I pray that Steve is okay. We are the same age and share the same philosophy: We do things because we didn't know we couldn't. I've got a little extra weight if you need it Steve!

However, I wonder if this leave of absence truly will remove the distractions for Apple. People will probably still keep wondering about Steve's condition unless he fully recovers, gains back all the weight, and goes on Oprah to take questions and holds a press conference to perform an Olympic gymnastics routine. And even then any time he coughs during a speech, people will start writing stories wondering if he's dying and if his cancer has come back.

How can you be so naieve?? He hasn't shown his face in months, withdraws from the keynote, is not in the audience and one week after his initial letter "surprise" finds out that is condition is worse than he thought?

We are being lied to plain and simple. If you wish to believe otherwise, that's fine. Steve is NOT FINE and he has not been fine for a long time.

Not saying I like it or anything, just stating the obvious.

you are not stating the obvious and merely jumping to conclusions. you rarely see steve jobs in public photos. he gave his reasons for not giving the keynote and why should he attend if he's not giving it? if he's in the audience reporters would be looking at him every second to try and gauge his health (and not concentrating on the keynote) and will probably ask him questions.

there are a lot people out there who don't always understand the complexity of a doctor's diagnosis and the seriousness of it. something like the ability to absorb nutrients is a serious matter. all you can do is take the man at his word.

steve jobs is a brilliant man. if you're suggesting he has cancer, then he just handled his succession for the past few months like an idiot.

i think this has more to do with the media as much as his health. they got what they wanted. their next story. my only question is if wired can't write about jobs' bowel movements anymore, what can they write about?

Keep Strong

Here's wishing you a full and speedy recovery, Steve.
Apple's in good hands. Forget about it, it's just a job.
Your health comes first and I'm sure I speak for the entire Apple community when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time.

I knew he was dying. He's doing a Freddie Mercury. He'll be gone soon. I know it sounds harsh.

I knew when he wrote that last letter before MacWorld that he was just covering for his lack of a keynote. Now we won't see him in the public eye until June???

I reckon the poor man has cancer.

On a plus note, if the CEO of Dell was ill, no-one would care. Jobs has quite the following...

No. He is definitely very, very ill. It's not a mystery. He's stopping there being a massive frenzy. If he admist he has 6 months to live... people will go crazy about the new successor.

I'm sure my reply will get lost in all the well-wishing but while I wish Steve and his family all the best over the coming months I think we'll eventually see these iMac and Mac mini announcements very shortly to soften the blow with the Apple community. Nothing like the announcements of new hardware and this 'secret' exciting product to shift focus back to Apple. I say new products by the end of the month. Let's see if I'm right :)

Thoughts and prayers are with you Steve. Get well soon!

this forum shows how gullible many people are :(

Last week, when the "letter" was published, mostly everyone said something like: "See! I told you he was A-OK!, it was just a tommy flu; this will take care of all those rumours about his health."

Today: "Oh no! he's not better after all..."

I hope SJ gets better, he's an amazing person, but we'll never know the degree of his illness, will we?

I wish Steve and his family all the best. But "hormone imbalance" my foot. CNBC hit the nail on the head, and I find the handling of this matter completely irresponsible.

:apple:

I would not be surprised if this is the last of Steve as CEO as we know it. First, some very vague letter in an attempt for damage control, one that said there was a very straight forward treatment for a nutritional problem. Suddenly, a week later it's a complex problem. I see a very big problem in such a turn of events - and I'm not talking about his health.

I think we best stop being naive and see this for what it is; an end of an era. This should not be a problem for Apple, but I do see this as a problem for people who think Apple=Steve Jobs. Let's get over it now and let the guy try to get his life in order if he can. Don't worry about Apple - it will survive just fine.

It's disgusting for people to joke here or to mention the stock price and Jobs' health in the same breath. Just odious.

He will either recover or he won't and nobody here knows squat at this moment.

As for whether or not Apple will go on without him, the answer is yes. Steve was one of the founders of the revolution and he showed many the way, but what he started is too big to die if he were to die or step down. He set new ways of thinking about the OS, about hardware, and about personal computing in motion. That was like a wave that just rippled out and started more people in that direction.

I hope he recovers and lives and comes back to Apple full time, but Apple will go on and prosper without him. A company's stock price is not always subject to reality. Most traders - be they pros or amateurs - are pinheads who react irrationally to news.

Anyway, screw all that. Let's just see what happens.

Not very good - sounds like he might even be on his last legs; it obviously is a lot more serious than just a weight hormone issue. I hope he gets well soon - but realistically, he isn't able to do his job, I don't think he's going to be in Apple for much longer.

2009 will see a new CEO for Apple.

Not necessarily. I have seen may friends go through pretty serious hormone issues. At times they can be quite mysterious. It can take many months, even years to determine exact causes and remedies. For certain the dietary changes, which go along with testing and medication, require rigorous discipline, time and effort to implement.

I am pretty sure we have not yet seen the last of Steve. I know many people, some who have been very ill, whom have gone 'into the cave' for six months to a year, only to reemerge stronger and more vibrant.

I remain positive.

Alot of love for a guy who probably gives more thought to the insects he steps on than to the likes of you.

It is kind of screwed up if your company depends on one particular person having such a stranglehold on the companys perceived fortunes or failures.

So sure, wish you well Steve, but also my parents, children, friends and everyone else in the world gets sick and dies too, so its nothing special.

But right now for us lowly consumer insects who are alive and whose lives are about making music and film, want FW!!

say all what you want about him he is still cooler than you  :D

I didn't really want to comment on this story but I feel it is right.

Steve Jobs is a human being, just like you and I. Now taking this on the worst case scenario Steve Jobs has a life limiting illness (which I hope he doesn't) then he is in the same position as 100's of thousands of unfortunate people around the world. None of them will have the public interest in their health and I am sure Steve wishes he could swap with them and get on with making himself better.

He has the best possible health care and his family will be financially secure whatever the outcome, a lot of people who are potentially in the same situation as himself do not have that luxury.

It reminds me very much of the situation with Freddie Mercury in the late 80's and early 90's (not that I remember that, I was 8 when he died). Anyway as the lead singer of the worlds biggest live act they hadn't toured since 1986 and questions where asked about his health, especially when they appeared on a TV shown in 1990. They often put his lack of public appearance down to a kidney infection or other minor illness. Then in last November 1991 he issued a statement saying he had AIDS, the next day he passed away.

Unfortunately this sounds all too familiar, and for Steve and his family I hope it is not.

Remember, life is a terminal sexually transmitted disease, it's just how we cope with it!
