Sell. All. Stock.

When Steve is gonna push up daisies (no offense meant, I hope he lives to be a hundred) stock will plummet.

Well I hope a lot of people have that reactionary mindset, so I can afford their stock.

There's more than just the possibility of recurrent cancer for Steve to take a medical leave. Don't forget he had a liver transplant and it's common for transplant patients to be in and out of the hospital for various reasons associated with that. So the possibilities are not that grim.

I wish him well!

Mr. Jobs - best to you and your family. You have helped make this exciting company healthier and stronger and better.

Now, lets see you yourself get the same way, so you can help continue to lead :apple:.

A few examples of my favorite comments on this sad news!

These members comments truly show their sensibilities on this sad news.
All the comments are moronic, some idiotic and ignorant, callous, negative, rude and even racist!
These are the guys that who reside in the peanut gallery of the forum and all should be ashamed of themselves.

"Steve Job's legacy is not assured unless there is an iron-clad succession policy in place. If the company fails in his absence, he's really built nothing at all then has he?"

What total BS! His legacy is certainly more than secure as probably the most innovative and creative not to mention financially lucrative CEO of this century.
Right up there with Henry Ford!

"www.wXXXmg.com is saying he requested a 12 month leave of absence and mentioned another liver transplant."

So much for the man's privacy!

"The press release gives little sign of optimism. The shares will plummet I guess."

Funny I did not get that from the reading of the press release!

"I hope it isn't a rejection of the transplant he had"

"This time it's over :-("

One of our many resident medical experts feeling free to make a comment on something they know nothing about!

"time to sell off all the apple products....while they're still worth something."

This is just one of the many of the more optimistic comments!

Though I hate the guy for bringing fanbois (13 yr old barbie doll fans who hate Adobe) into the world of tech discussion, I care enough to post good wishes on this forum.

Get well Steve!

I had the opportunity to actually meet Steve Jobs right after his Macworld 2000 keynote address, where he introduced Mac OS X for the first time. I broke through the crowds at the front of the room, and made my way to Jobs, where I shook his hand and talked with him for about 2 minutes. I was 17 years old at the time. He was very friendly to me, and excited to hear that I was Vice President of my Mac Usergroup here in Fort Worth, TX. I told him I was excited about seeing Aqua and Mac OS X and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I told him about the Macs I currently owned, and that we had just gotten my Dad an iMac, his first computer ever. Jobs was very friendly and actually took the time to talk to me and seemed interested in what I was telling him. I turned to my side as I was about to walk off the stage, and there was Jonathan Ive! I said, "You are Jonathan Ive, right?" and he said "Yeah." I told him I really loved the design of the iMac and all the new Mac products that were being designed (this was right after he had started at Apple as head of Industrial Product Design).

This was in January of 2000, 11 years ago, and Jobs had some weight on him, he was in good health, and he had a full head of hair which was brown, not grey. He looked quite like a different person back then than his fail, aged looking self of today. I am really, really saddened by this news today. I have always been a fan of Steve Jobs, he is the visionary behind Apple, and because of his leadership, strategy, and pure Vision he has turned a company that was on the brink of bankruptcy in 1996-1997 into the 2nd largest company in the world!! It is absolutely amazing to see where Apple has come in fourteen years. Absolutely unbelievable. Mac OS X, the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad, the transition to intel, The iTunes store, the App Store. and innovation after innovation have transformed this company from a niche exclusive computer company into the largest technology company in the world!! The vision of "Think different" will always be a legacy at Apple because of Jobs.

I will really miss this man. Keynote after keynote, no CEO in the world is as intimately involved in his company and understands each of his products and the inner workings of the company and its technology as much as Jobs. He really understands things, and he is a business and marketing genius when it comes to demonstrating and selling products. He is the CEO, and unlike other major technology CEOs like Steve Ballmer, Jobs actually understands his products and he is passionate about what he does, every single day. I really hope that Jobs can recover from this one, and I hope this is not the end of an era for Steve Jobs. It has been apparent that his health has been failing him, he has not gained very much weight since his comeback and has been looking very thin with a gravelly voice. It has been amazing that Jobs has even been able to function as CEO during his time. We all wish him the best, and hope for a full recovery back to health as soon as possible.

We love you Steve,
We wish you all the best,
You saved my favorite company (The one you started and returned to)
The future of Apple now has never been brighter,
Only the best days still lie ahead.

Recover soon, be healthful, live long, and strong.
We want you back soon!

Get well soon Steve, we will miss you.

God doesn't exist, so I can't tell him to bless you Steve. But I wish you the very best of luck in defeating your health problems.

Really? So if there's a building, it obviously has a builder, correct? Why wouldn't creation have a creator? Look around you. ;)

First and foremost Steve said he's requesting a leave of absence which indicates that he believes he'll be returning at some point in the future to resume his day to day duties. His remark about The plans they have for 2011 certainly would indicate that he expects to be gone for much of the year.

IMO there is no reason to panic. Tim Cook proved during Steve's last leave of absence that he can handle the day to day operations perfectly well and Steve has said he'll be involved in any major strategic decisions so I don't see how Apple misses a beat this year. Any major product releases scheduled to occur this year (iPad 2, iPhone 5, OS X 10.7, Mac product refreshes, etc) are already in the pipeline and have been for some time.

Worst case scenario, if this is permanent, as long as Steve's around he'll be involved in major strategic decisions as he said he would be and there's going to come a time at some point in the future where he's not involved with the company at all. What's important is that he's developed a culture of innovation at the company and that it continues. It's not like Steve's being forced out and will have no say in Apple's future. Tim Cook is his hand picked successor.

Steve Jobs loves Apple because he believes not only did he build Apple, but that Apple is changing the world for the better (and he is right on both counts.) He doesn't want to hurt his company and so I could easily see him making this announcement in the way he did to ease the transition to Tim Cook and help prevent a large stock price loss.

By saying he remains CEO and involved in critical decisions he helps reduce the stock loss and then we can watch as Tim Cook expertly manages the major launches of the iPad 2, Verizon iPhone, iPhone 5, iOS 5, and a likely new suite of cloud computing for all Apple devices. With investors feeling more confident in Tim, Steve will then announce his retirement and that Tim Cook is the new CEO.

I pray for Steve, more than anyone knows he IS Apple and the devices we use everyday are because of one single man. May he find health, peace, family and God are with him.

Steve is a visionary. The departure could not have been better timed. AAPL is on top of the world in sales and distribution. Everything is on an upward trajectory. New product revisions are in the pipeline.

Tim Cook has previously demonstrated leadership capabilities. Now, one day before an earnings report, when the stock market is closed, Jobs announces a medical leave of absence. The knee-jerk reaction to sell off stock and claim impending doom may be tempered by stellar financial results.

I say, "Good for him!" Pancreatic cancer statistically has a 30% three-year survival rate. http://clnpstr.com/pANcr Because we like Steve, we expect more. Even while fighting an uphill battle, he expects more. (Ec 9:12) One must ask though, if statistics are remotely plausible, how would you rather spend those years? Wrangling with the stresses of running one of the largest company in the world or relaxing with family and taking care of your health?

Great Mark Twain quote by Steve Jobs: "Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

We wish you the best, Steve.

SJ will be missed on the keynotes in 2011

I will surely miss the excitement SJ brings to the keynotes of product launches. i have no doubt phil schiller and the rest will do a good job (no pun Intended) but their is only one man that can deliver the keynotes SJ

get well soon SJ :apple:

My only problem with Tim Cook is his name. I am sure that Waz and Jobs would agree, Anyone at the top of Apple should have the name Steve. It is easy to get a court to change your name. I think all the board of directors should do so today.

Apple computer is a great company, the life of a man is far more important. If the day to day stress of running the company is damaging Mr. Job's heath, he needs to find a less stressful way of keeping busy. He might find, without the stress of day to day operations, his creative side might become more active and he might be a better value to the company.

I know, the more I let others do the day to day stuff, the better I am at coming up with the big ideas. It does not matter how much you pay someone or how skilled they are, people who don't own a company see things differently than those who do. Those who see themselves as the owner need to pick and choose what to delegate and what they need to do themselves.

One advantage Mr. Jobs has over anyone stepping in for him is the power of celebrity. Mr. Jobs can tell the Board Of Directors what the company will do. The Board can do it, or they can find another company to screw up. I don't know if Tim Cook has that power.

Mr. Jobs primary responsibility today is to get better. When he does come back, his responsibilty will be to find a less stressful way to do his job.

Get well soon.

My wife worked at Pixar. She met him on a few occasions at work and I got to quickly chat with him at a release party. I have met a few CEOs of very large companies. I met Larry Elison and he kind of felt like a rock star who you would never associate with in real life. I met the previous CEO of UPS (Mike Eskew) at a work function and after his retirement at a party and he is just a regular guy you can chat with. Meeting Steve Jobs was like meeting a great artists...like meeting Bob Dylan or John Lennon.

Hopefully it's something that he can deal with and recover. We know he has the best care humanly possible. I don't care much if he comes back to Apple, he's already put his mark on history in so many areas. I hope he gets the rest and treatment he needs so he can continue to impact our lives.

Wow. I wish I could meet him some day...

i think Tim will do a great job during this time. his views are so similar to steve. even if steve does leave as CEO, when he gets better he will come back and be very active in his vision and drive more product ideas. plus maybe even give the keynotes because there is nothing like a new product with steve showing it off :D

get well steve!!! there are millions around the world who have you in their prayers!

Then by your own logic. Which would seem to be that everything has a creator. Who created your creator?

Get well, Mr Jobs, Sir. Lets hope all returns to normal some time soon and that you are back to rude health as soon as possible. Respect.

Well I hope a lot of people have that reactionary mindset, so I can afford their stock.

QFT - Even with Steve gone, the ecosystem he has built will not die overnight. A person would have to be a serious tool (i.e Balmer) to run something like this into the ground.

The day is going to come when Steve Jobs is no longer running all things Apple. It will be very interesting to see where the company goes, when that occurs. (It did not do well the last time)

You know, you all don't have to respond to or quote Chris650. Sometimes, it's best to just ignore people.

I respectfully disagree, although I totally get what you are saying. I think it is important to respond, not because we will change him, which we all know we wont. But because it is important so let others know that as a society we do not abide by this kind of rhetoric.

Hate to sound like a pessimist, but Steve isn't going to last forever, especially with that transplant. His body could have already rejected it.

It's for the best that he's grooming a replacement now.

Also, the anti-semetic comments are rather unwarranted, and rather immature. Please grow up-- religion and heritage mean nothing.
