I just watched NBC News right now and they don't have a lot more to add. Cook will run the company like before but stocks will probably take a hit.

Anyway, the main thing is Mr. Jobs' health, and the stock is overvalued as it is and would have eventually corrected itself. If the stock goes down too far, then that will only add an opportunity for others to invest and Jobs has left the company in good enough condition that it has become self-sufficient.

There must have been huge speculation when Bill Gates stepped down as CEO of Microsoft, or when Henry Ford was no longer head of Ford, but in each case the company moved forward due in a large part to how well the founder(s) established the company.

Apple is no longer just a computer company and links much of its success to iPhone, iPod/iTunes, OS X, iPad, and move to Intel. Adding Verizon as a carrier won't hurt, either. This diversity, much of what was insisted by Jobs when others still saw it as a computer hardware company, is what can keep it strong no matter who runs it.

Quarterly earnings report tomorrow, MLK holiday today. They're obviously managing the impact on stocks. I doubt it'll have any serious implications.

Tim Cook has already proven himself to be a great day-to-day man, and as COO it's basically his job anyway.

Besides all of that, something tells me Steve would have a hand in Apple until the day he dies - something that I sincerely hope is many years away.

Good luck and Godspeed.

I am not a bit worried about the company. It will do just fine.

But I do wish Steve all the best. I hate to think where we would be without him.

lol

honestly last week i had a conversation where i said steve jobs should retire despite the way he loves apple and apple needs him. i said he needed to live without apple these last remaining years... he is dying, he needs to retire. i guess i was right after all. just a coincidence, but i think it's the best for him. also apple will continue to be awesome with or without steve jobs. i'm not worried at all for apple products honestly... i'm still waiting for iphone 5 though =)

I've never submitted a post to these forums before but I often 'drop-in'. I just needed it to be said that I was a windows fan..I built my own liquid cooled PC and my first visit to an apple store had me seething in fury thinking that apple was making a buck out of plagiarising Unix and Linux...

I now have two iPhones, an iMac, a Macbook Pro and an iPad! Boy had I been wrong!!

I'm 38 and am the head of two departments for a large UK company. IF all companies were led by someone like Steve then maybe the world would be a better place.

Respect to Steve for his commitment and loyalty. My well wishes and admiration go out to him and I wish him a speedy recovery!

+1 Well Said

I'm not so sure about that. As I recall, the first time they went through this, there was some concern that Apple might've engaged in securities fraud by not disclosing this type of information in a timely manner, so the timing is probably a reflection of excess caution rather than excess desperation.

Just what I was thinking, well said.

what if?!!!

for the upcoming ipad 2 media event. where they are sure to demonstrate fecetime for ipad. it is demonstrated where they call steve jobs at his house, or hospital or wherever he is.

That would be a very nice touch.

In all honesty, how "horrible" is his health?
Is it really that bad? :( (as in, no return to Apple as a few have stated)

He's had Pancreatic Cancer and a Liver transplant. I'm sure that takes a toll on anyone.

I wish Steve and his family all the best.

Cheers,

You really should do a little to check your "facts"

Fifty years ago, a 9 inch black and white TV seemed like science fiction.

The trivial Yahoo! search for "first color television" pops up things like:

http://www.post-gazette.com/tv/20031231colortv1231p3.asp

The first Admiral color television using the current national transmission standard was sold Dec. 30, 1953, said Tom Genova, amateur TV historian, retired Ford auto engineer and creator of the Web site www.tvhistory.tv.

http://www.ev1.pair.com/colorTV/NBCcolortape.html

NBC inaugurated Colorcasting on November 22, 1953 with "The Colgate Comedy Hour" and shortly thereafter on January 1, 1954 with "The Tournament of Roses Parade," and was continually adding new color shows to their schedule through the 1950's and 60's.

http://www.classicthemes.com/50sTVThemes/themePages/disneyland.html

When color came to television, ABC was lagging behind, so in 1961, "Walt Disney Presents" moved to NBC where it became "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" with a new vocal THEME song incorporated into its colorful opening;

Fifty years ago, broadcast color television was widespread.

2 thoughts come to mind.

Get well soon Steve! :)

Quick, Steve's out of the office! Release that new xMac/Cube!

+1. It is the one product Apple fans have been wishing for the longest. No one wished for the iPod, iPhone or iPad for as long or in the way we have for a xMac.

Also don't forget that Apple is part of the "Four Horsemen". With low volume in the market when Apple drops so will the others and then chain starts all over again. Sure hope any of you aren't LONG. :D
Earnings come out tomorrow. I have a bad feeling about this. It could have waited until tomorrow. BUT no they let the cat out of the bag today on a holiday. Was this something that could have waited? That liver transplant was unexplained to us. So what they did was buy time. Great.
I will be busy with SHOT and have others relaying info for me on the earnings report. IF we had bought at 300 we would be pissed. Good thing most are in at 100 and very short. We really aren't expecting much.

I pray he gets saved and trusts in Jesus. Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.

get well soon Steve Jobs! i see Steve going back and continuing as CEO (but for how long), but this is another great chance for Cook and the other executives to practice running Apple without Steve around.

i think that they will do a great job and continue Apple on its current successes. but will they be able to keep Apple's success on the up without Steve around in the future?

I, too, would like to wish Steve Jobs great health, and a speedy recovery.

Everything else I try to type sounds stupid!

Is he really?
I didn't know
Interesting, I didnt think that religion is practiced in the US.

Forgive me if I sound like a total idiot

You may be further illuminated to learn that the concept of "forgiveness" has little value in the Buddhist belief system. Neither does guilt.

So don't worry about it. :)

And at last check, Buddhism was the fourth largest observed religion in the USA with several million (predominately Asian American) followers.

Giz is totally trying to earn brownie points so they can get their Apple Media Events pass re-instated.
