Some of these editorial articles about Jobs' leave of absence are completely misguided.

For example, the NYT:

"In these circumstances, Apple would have been better served by explicitly naming Mr. Cook acting chief. That would leave Mr. Jobs as chairman, where he could retain say over the Apple’s strategic direction without the grueling daily chores of running the company."

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/18/business/18views.html?src=mv

What the hell do they think Tim Cook has been doing all these years? Jobs hasn't run day-to-day operations at Apple since Cook became COO --- likely even before that.

He's always been a product guy, not an operations/financial guy. Cook basically fills the "traditional" CEO role at Apple.

Get well soon, Steve. You are the spirit of this company. His letter to the employees, or "Team" as he calls them, just shows again that he is a fighter.

Steve is an iconic figure. Here's hoping he makes a quick return to the helm he's made his own. God be with you and prayers abound for you and your family during this moment of downtime. We'll miss you!

so sad... i woke up today in hopes of "real news" on the forum, but instead, the old man is sick again and all the b.s. that comes with it is starting all over again. :(

Jobs is a great guy! Hopefully this is not serious...

Great timing for this announcement tho! Think about it.. Market is closed today in the US, and if shares drop tomorrow morning, they will bounce back after the earnings call tomorrow afternoon which will most likely report a STELLAR earning.
Also, iPad 2 is due to be announced in the next few weeks, Verizon iPhone will definitely give Apple a BOOST in sales, iPhone 5 should be a fantastic new product (if Engadget is spot on with their report), most likely new Macbook Pro sometime this year, and who knows what else they have up their sleeve with the new data center in NC.
This is PERFECT timing for Jobs to focus on his health.. Apple if on a good course this year!

I like your positive attitude.

What is the worst that could happen to keynotes if Steve goes?

Oh.

I'm fine. I just want a vacation. Whoops, I mean HE just wants a vacation...

Great, Steve. While you're gone, we're going to slip Blu-ray into the OS, optical drives back into the mobiles, and BD burners in the Pro and iMac.

Really, you'll never notice. Even the increase in sales.

It's the phone that people use to talk to each other face to face.
Some poor people like Kenny can't afford iPhone so they're stuck with Googlefone. :(

kennycellcover.jpg

They killed the kennyphone!!! You BASTARDS!!!!

anyone think he will come back eventually?

how old is he?

Old enough to know better.

I am not a bit worried about the company. It will do just fine.

But I do wish Steve all the best. I hate to think where we would be without him.

Cutting edge workstations with Blu-ray burners and full implementation in the OS. And a competitive Logic that would kick ProTools' ass and a FCS that would have destroyed Avid by now. With Shake. Without a doubt.

And a company that was EQUALLY AS MUCH a cutting edge computer maker for creatives (as it started out to be) as a fad toymaker for the LCD masses.

And a company without a corresponding huge bubble in its bottom line.

yeah, he's biologically Arab. his father, though he put him up for adoption, was Syrian, mom, christian american. so he has a mix. love him to death. best of luck!

Explains the stubbornness. May it help his recovery.

:apple:

I don't think that Apple will stay a shining star without him,

This is about as idiotic as it gets on here.

that an the suggestion that such a profitable company with so many billions in reserve will take some kind of big dive in stock price just because SJ retires.

a company this size can't possibly be one person. There is so much momentum with iPad and iPhone and OSX that it would take some major, major stupidity to wreck this cash cow.

I agree, I think the transplant just bought him more time but didn't cure him.
Very true. What many fail to understand is the fact this is a very aggressive incurable cancer. The only reason he got a new liver relatively quickly, is his massive resouces and name. He's already survived longer than most. Money can only prolong the inevitable. Sad, but true.

As far as the company is concerned, his DNA is fully baked into Apple. They're well known as long term planners, thus they will be fine for awhile.

The most noticeable hit, will be to those customers he directly thinks for and guides through life.

Now left out on their own, the fear factor of uncertainty will kick in. They will find decisions being dropped in their lap. At long last they'll be on their own and groping for answers. A side effect of having another person influencing & guiding you.*

Good luck to those individuals. There will be a huge void in their lives.

I don't think he's done just yet. He's only 55, btw and he said he wants to return soon.

+1. There was an article somewhere about this mentioning people who went through what he did go through up and down periods and often need to take time for rest and such.

All the best steve

Best wishes for steve and the family.

Hope he will be ok.

But with pancreatic cancer... it's one of the nastiest type.

edit - just sent him a get well soon email - steve@apple.com. Not sure he'll read it but worth the effort!!

This is indeed sad

The images of Steve tell it all. I suspect he will be physically unable to do any real work at Apple in the next few weeks to months.
Apple is about to go it without Steve again very soon. One can only hope that the idiocy that occurred the last time Steve was not at the helm will not be repeated.

Hard to believe that the two companies that started more or less together, Apple and Microsoft, will now have their anchors lifted forever. Sailing freely is never without grave risk. MS has shown how incapable it is without BG-- let's hope that Apple, which has steadily gained ground, hauled in millions of new users and is about to make that exponential turn in the market can keep the momentum going.

History would not give me much confidence in this but one never knows.

The secret is reality distortion.

Mac OS was around version 4 when Jobs was fired back in 1986. Sculley sold the store cheap and put the company in a downward spiral.

Cook seemed to be getting pretty cozy with Verizon. What will be the test is if he can turn the reality distortion field on one last time. :apple::cool:

Let's face it folks. This is it for Steve. He will NOT come back. They are smart by announcing a 'medical leave of absence' as to not shake up the investors too much (but their stock will take a hit). They will let Tim Cook run things during some successful launches to show people he can get the job done.. then later announce Steve's retirement.

I don't think you, or anyone else, can know this right now.

Clearly he has some serious health issues. He might not come back. Then again, he might - it's not like he's lost interest. In the end, it all depends on whether he survives this latest setback. If he does, he'll be back, and he'll kick ass once again. If not - and I am going to bet my money against this possibility - then Apple will not be the same company it once was. It might still continue as the biggest tech company in the world though, the things they've put in place, and the team, are going to be able to carry this for years on end.

Without Steve Jobs, what's going to be missing is new products that redefine a category and invent markets - nobody else outside Apple can do this, and I also believe that nobody inside Apple can do this - except Steve. The man's a genius, he's not replaceable.

Apple will continue to be successful without SJ. I think it's incredibly naive to assume Apple hasn't got other competent staff to carry the company forward. It's also incredibly stupid to assume that all of Apple's products and ideas are down to just one man.

Hmm. Steve Jobs seems to be a man of few words and no doubt chooses those he uses carefully. In his email I noted the phrase 'hope to be back as soon as I can'. He says 'hope to be back' and not 'will be back'. Sounds to me like he's not sure he will be back.

I wish him well.

Yeah, I'm sure in the 90's they thought they would be ok without Steve too. The difference this time at least, steve is in charge of what team is running things in his absence. I could see him stepping back but still being the creative force behind their ideas, with them doing the daily heavy lifting. Crazy how much of a difference one man makes in a company. If anyone "thinks different" with that, then they are fooling themselves.

Hoping that it's not a nasty condition but just the need to really rest and not be on the edge day-in and day-out like Steve Jobs has been during 2010.

Like someone said above, the "Steve Jobs Vision" of Apple is now deeply ingrained within the key staff of the company. Steve's absence will not cause a loss of that sense of direction from the company, even if Steve were, for a reason or another, to cease any activity in Apple (which is not the case by now).

Steve's absence will not "kill" Apple, what might would be infighting to be the next "king". Those who whine about there not being a succession-plan are totally off-the-mark. Firstly, because there likely is a succession plan, but it's just undisclosed; secondly disclosing anything about that (and for that matter about Steve Jobs' health) would be the best way to ignite the infighting, therefore would hurt the company badly.

Anyway, all the best, Steve.

come on, the guy is a billionaire and CEO of Apple! He won't die that easily.
And i'm sure he won't quit on apple. He will just take a vacation and come back to announce "the next big thing" :)

The Lion strikes back, presenting: OSX Lion!
the lion being steve :p

But Steve has the veto to say if a product is a "go" or a "no". That is of huge importance, and what got Apple back on its feet with Steve.
