Okay yea.. well duh! what kind of news is this.
Is it just me or is apple trying so hard to be different its blatantly obvious and now sort of predictable. Computers have become this sort of religion.. but who doesnt love being a minority!
Well what is gonna happen this keynote? personally, i hate keynotes and if i were a developer i'd be like "well obviously it can do that" and i'd be listening to steve and be like "man, maybe he thinks this room is filled with people who don't know anything about computers.."
Anyways, this keynote will probably be about Servers and/or Powerbooks
Hopefully, apple will give credit to its audience and not do anything to consumer. Powerbooks and Servers are the two most important things apple needs to improve to save its PRO line or lack of a pro line. With the disappointment of the PMs, lets hope that pro's will be interested in portables and VERY NON portables.

Cheers,
Ini

I can't imagine not having a Keynote. It is a way to hear publicly from Steve. Sort of a stockholders meeting for customers. We get to hear about what is going on at Apple since the last Keynote. Reading the same information just would not be the same. Would miss Stevenote charisma.

Steve could always announce a new Pro Mac desktop line that developers might like. They are customers also.

couldn't Apple bring out dual core G4's or whatever and just name them G5's?
Nobody would be any wiser and Apple could just market them at 2.2ghz or whatever? Seems theasible.

Put simply, no. Apple can't just change their branding scheme on a whim to make things more convenient for them or perceptually appealing in such a manner - they would get into a lot of trouble over something like that, publicly (people don't like being lied to) and legally (IBM/Moto/Freescale).

And what exactly does theasible mean? :p

It's simple - just make the existing PowerBook line the new iBook line, as is, and then overhaul and revolutionaize the PowerBook line with dual-core G4s/G5s. Piece of cake, I can't believe Apple hasn't done this yet! :p ;)

I was thinking the exact same thing...weird

Please don't be too hard on him. Most of us have made typing errors. Although I give you credit, it's better to make it a positive correction.

My .02. on hardware at WWDC

In order of likelihood:

(1) HD display 17" PB [overdue for this]
(2) 2.7 dual Xserve
(3) Dual-core "Workstation-class" Macs and dual-core Xserves [only if no production issues w/ 970 MP]
(4) HD/Dual-core 17" [Freescale supposed to go to full production 2nd half this year]
(5) Dual-core 15" [ditto]
(6) 12" stays as G4 but moves to 1.67 + 64 MB MR 9600.
(6) 2-button mouse
(7) iBook G4's move up to 1.5 + 64MB MR 9600.

I agree with the majority of posters a PB G5 is unlikely, ever.

Oh... for the person talking about slapping dual core g4's or whatever in and saying it's G5... big problem....G4..32bit, G5..64bit, I think ppl would notice.

Happily we only have a month to wait now. :)

#3 would this be the possible Pro Mac? Would it be a high end Mac that could be purchased for home. Could it possibly be available this summer?

Will the PowerBooks be available this summer?

The dual-core G4 chips are not suppose to be available until early 2006, so if there was a Powerbook update at WWDC, which I doubt, it almost certainly won't be dual core G4.

Apple is going to have to do something with the PowerBooks before 2006 though... And I think that any more marginal upgrades are not going to be looked too kindly upon...

Yep, too right. People are getting bored with speed bumps on the Powerbooks.

Let's not forget that, as has already been pointed out, iBooks haven't been updated for ten months and if iBooks are to be updated, then Powerbooks will have to be updated at the same time.

Whatever happens, I think I'll buy an iBook as soon as they're next updated because I can't risk having to wait another 10 - 12 months for another revision!

Exactly. If the iBooks get an update, they will be too similar to the PowerBooks, and hurt the PB line even more. I'm fine with a marginal update to the iBooks (speed increase, memory upgrade to 512 MB, video card, etc.), but I think the PowerBooks are going to need a major upgrade.

So the question is, is Apple going to willingly delay iBook updates, even though they may already have them good to go, for the sake of PowerBook updates?

I dont think so. PBs are a problem. If anything they might reduce the prices of the PBs slightly with a new iBook update, but PBs still will have several edges in terms of features like vram etc

I would like to agree with you - I'd like to see iBook updates regardless of PowerBook updates, but that's just to suit my selfish needs. ;) PowerBooks would still have advantages over the iBooks, like you said: VRAM, things like a backlit keyboard, Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire 400 & 800, Analog audio in/out, DVI & S-Video out. So, if Apple can maybe drop the price on the PowerBooks, this would make them more appealing, and you could update the iBooks processors, memory, and video card, and not risk cannibalizing PowerBook sales too much.

It will be interesting to see how Apple handles this and what the timing will be on the next releases. Hopefully things happen sooner rather than later...

My bet is on accessories...

Most of you have speculated on new Macintoshes, but for the most part they have all had recent upgrades (save the iBook). Don't you think it is more likely to get a round of accessory upgrades that take advantage of Tiger? iSight 2 capable of better low-light performance and higher resolution would be nice. Wasn't Airport Express released at last year's WWDC? I can see an update to it - possibly a video out? The only problem with that is the bandwidth of 802.11g. What about an Airport controller that also has an IR port?

I'm not sure what's likely to happen to the price of the Powerbook but, to be honest, I actually think that a price drop is very likely for the iBook.

Here in New Zealand, there are retailers selling name brand 14" Intel Compatible laptops for around half the price of the cheapest 14" iBook. Of course, we all know that the iBook is still worth the extra cost for the ease of use, reliability, and stunning good looks, but the average consumer doesn't perceive that such an enormous price difference is justified.

Falling LCD prices and increased competition have been putting price pressure on the iBook for a long time and I'm hoping that we will benefit from this in the near future.

I totally agree. The iBooks could definitely afford a price drop, and this would make them a lot more competitive in the marketplace. Any update is welcome though at this point, it's been 10 months!

I've seen several different dates for the dual-core 8641D--sample 1H, production 2H '05 and sample 2H and production '06.

There are two other alternatives: Apple can use the G4 7448 [200 Mhz Bus, up to 2Ghz] which is pin-compatible w/ 7447 and is supposed to be sampling now.

A much better idea would be to use the 8641 (the non-dual version of the 8641D) it is supposed to be sampling now and has a 667 Mhz FSB and PCI-E. And has the same packaging as the dual-core allowing an easy upgrade if the dual-core's aren't shipping until 2006.

If the PBs are updated with the 8641, I'd like to see the iBooks updated with the 7448. Nice little bus bump.

The 14" iBook is seriously overpriced...£200 more than the 12" It's also looking like the iBook is going to have the same massive 8/10 month revision time frame that all Apple computers are having now. :( :(

Yep. Something has to be done, and done soon!

The logic behind there having to be an iBook and Powerbook upgrade at WWDC is pretty damn good.... can't upgrade the one that needs it most, without upgrading the Pro line or run the risk of having sales plummet, plus the fact that everything else bar Xserve has been recently upgraded..... there HAS to be something hardware related for Steve to bang on about!

If it is PB's and iBooks and if the PB's get at the very very miniumum a speedbump but with an increased FSB and dual layer DVD-RWs, then I'll be upgrading.... but I would LOVE dual core G4's..... :D
