I am really looking foward to this. I thought the Mac monitor convention was well done by steve. I am sure this will be as well. :)

I suppose power/ibooks bumps (I don't expect major updates there...)

iBooks are long overdue. On the one hand I would expect significant updates for them, yet any update to the iBook at this stage will make them essentially identical to the PowerBooks, and probably canabalize the PB sales until a major PB update comes out. So, this being said, I would expect iBook updates anytime now, but maybe Apple will need to wait to release them until they update the PB line (at WWDC).

Just some thoughts...

i agree, its either powerbook update along with iBooks, or not at all. it wouldn't make sense to have the same processors in both laptops. i'm becoming less and less certain of a hardware update. probably just accessories (2 button mouse and jam box etc.)

I hope the iBooks get updated soon, because that means PowerBooks have to get updated as well. ;) Plus, my girlfriend wants an iBook so I hope they're released soon for her. :)

arg...

Some people in their PB G5 fanticies... screw your head on all the way b4 talking. Hmm... powerbook... metalic...dispates heat... g5..hot.. puts out lots of heat. Putting a g5 in a pb at this moment would make the PB a hotpad to keep your coffee hot or to cook an egg on the run. If go to Freescales website about the Dual G4 and read. The power consumption is much much less than a g5... heat is also much less... PLUS.. bragging rights for Mr. Jobs on having the first Dual proc. notebook. So PLEASE STOP TAKLING ABOUT THE PB G5! It would be idiotic to want one!

As I've said before, I think a dual-core G4 PowerBook is more likely than a G5 PowerBook at this stage of things. Maybe we'll find out at WWDC.

too late...

Intel Demos Dual-Core Pentium M Notebook

For those familiar with XP, the right-hand window clearly shows Task Manager showing two processors....

But most software doesn't really make use of the dual core yet does it? And isn;'t the G5 dual core programming going to be different enough from the G4 that improvements are not going to be huge???

You're absolutely right with your first comment - the second one, I am not sure... I was looking at it more from the heat/power issues if nothing else, plus the fact that seeing the freescale dual core G4 is more and more of a possibility as time goes on.

I do hope that many of you guys are right and we will see new PBs at WWDC. I just don't see this happen. The update cycles for ALL products have been really really long recently. I do hope that we see updates to PBs at around Oct. or if it is a bigger update already in Paris. My worst scenario is that the updates are due at MWSF06.
As for the CPUs:
update in October means MPC7448 which would be an improvement with its 200MHz FSB. Not that great, but OK.
update at Paris - MPC8641. Single core CPU, but FSB at 667MHz. This would be a really great update and I would appreciate if it happens.
update at MWSF: MPC8641D or a 970xx. I would prefer the MPC8641D. Really great update. But it takes some time.

Updates at WWDC - I just don't see this happen.

The iBooks are due for an update - but why not put them closer to the PBs ? Apple did that in the past. The PB price-performance ist currently a joke compared to the new iMac. (not to other WIN notebooks in the market) But thats true for over a year.

Cheers

I'm thinking form factor changes to the iBook.

The design is four freaking years old.

Might be time... It'll be interesting to see what Apple does with the iBook, I'd really like to see more than just another marginal speed increase. But, as I said before, then they run the risk of making the iBook too similar to the PowerBook, thus requiring PowerBook updates which I'm not sure Apple is in a position to offer just yet.

That being said, since my girlfriend is in the market for an iBook, I say update the hell out of them and make them PowerBook clones for much less $$$ - I'd be happy with that!

LOL.

I love my iBook (sans display), but the design, although beautiful (mine always gets lookers at the airport), is old.

Agreed - let's hope the next round of iBook updates gives us something to talk about.

Hyper thread processors also show up as 2 processors in XP.
Do you honestly think that Intel would show an HT system and claim in a public forum with semiconductor experts that it's dual-core? LOL

The dual-core Pentium M (Yonah) has been shown several times. It's waiting for 65nm for production - so I would presume that we're seeing prototypes done on 90nm. (Good for debugging and fine-tuning the logic, but too big and hot for the final product.)

Dual Cores and Power Management

Go to that page to read more about the multiple power modes and the ability of the two cores to independently throttle back when not needed.

I thought that 20 minutes was the amount of time that a PB G5 would run before causing second degree burns to your legs....

There is something else that they could do to improve the iBooks : a price drop. Notebooks in general have been becoming cheaper and cheaper in recent years because of decreases in the cost of LCD panels, and Apple will have to follow this trend eventually. Of course, this is still something that Apple can't do until they upgrade the Powerbooks, because cheaper iBooks would further erode Powerbook sales.

My own opinion is that, in the next six months, we will see speedbumped G4 iBooks, and an architectural overhaul of the Powerbook (probably with the Freescale processor that everyone is now talking about). I would anticipate this happening at roughly the same time because, as you all point out, Apple are probably dying to update iBooks but can't do so until they update Powerbooks.

I would happily buy a G4 1.5GHz iBook to replace my aging G3 800MHz iBook, but a bit of price incentive would help!

It's simple - just make the existing PowerBook line the new iBook line, as is, and then overhaul and revolutionaize the PowerBook line with dual-core G4s/G5s. Piece of cake, I can't believe Apple hasn't done this yet! :p ;)

Promotions

I'd love to see an iBook update. I've just dropped my old iBook G4/800 and I'm looking for a new one. All this talk about new designs and the WWDC coming up are making me anxious about buying one now though.

I got a promotion code from Apple.ca today for $40 off $400 for "shopping at the iTunes Music Stores," valid for only 14 days from today, which I thought was perfect timing for me.. But then I come to Macrumors and realize the WWDC is on June 6th.. It sounds like they're trying to get me to buy either an iPod or a new computer before they roll something new out.. I am tempted just to buy an ibook or powerbook now, but I will be kicking myself if a month from now there is something much cooler and better (that I would easily have paid $40 more to have).

decisions.. decisions..
