I'm really very glad Jobs is doing this. I have flash disabled by default as it's exactly the way he describes it.

A necessary evil in order to force a solution

He's so conceited, I really hope the newspapers keep using flash, just to spite him. Never-mind I also disagree with his whole philosophy of trying to tell other companies what's in their best interests.

Adobe Flash is in no one's (especially consumers') best interests.

Steve knows that he knows what he's talking about. And that bothers you?

Yes it can, and will. You will see in the 12 months website having html5 and flash sites. Once all browsers support html5, they will turn off their flash sites.

And once that happens, then the license holders will start charging for it:

Mozilla's Chris Blizzard said:
Because it's still early in H.264's lifespan it's extremely advantageous to lightly enforce the patents in the patent pool. MP3 and GIF both prove that if you allow liberal licensing early in a technology's lifespan, network effects create much more value down the road when you can change licenses to capture value created by delivering images and data in those formats. Basically wait for everyone to start using it and then make everyone pay down the road.

Steve has a job to do. He's the CEO of Apple and has to do the best thing by Apple in order to maximise value to shareholders.

If that means putting a bit of spin on things, then that's what he has to do.

Hahahahahahahaha!

I can imagine old Steve foaming on his mouth talking non-sense and general ******** while at the same time, in the real world, things like this are happening:

FLASH ON NEXUS ONE! --- > http://theflashblog.com/?p=1781

Steve go retire for the sake of all of us please!

:D

EDIT:

By the way, did Steve or any one of you wonder, why Flash crashes Safari on the Mac and it never crashes Firefox!?!?!

LOL!

Perhaps Steve should be fixing Safari instead of talking poo...

If you are going to imagine Steve Jobs talking nonsense, make sure you aren't doing exactly that. Flash can crash Firefox very well.

"We don't spend a lot of time on old technology"

O RLY!?!?

The majority of the products currently sold by Apple are equipped with OLD technology. It is one of the ways Apple has made a fortune over the past decade.

Once designers make Flash free site for iPhones then Android, Windows mobile and Palm users will use them as well. So the problem with Flash gets worse.

Every other major phone platform is getting Flash 10.1, even android, palm and blackberry phones.

Provide flash or I will not buy. apple always using power issues to avoid real answers to real problems. Flash does not effect other cell phones that support it. Looks like flash is going to bring death to apple soon.

And once that happens, then the license holders will start charging for it:

You don't seem to know (or acknowledge) the difference between H.264 and html5. And you are engaging in the smokescreen that Flash video is a-ok because, years from now, H.264 *might* have licensing fees.

News Flash (pun intended): creating Flash means Adobe lock-in and Adobe fees. Take your pick, pay for something that's inefficient and totally closed and proprietary, or pay for something that's much more efficient and "open" (though not "free").

(And don't bring up Theora until it catches up to where common codecs were in 2002.)

Yes Apple USED to be the one pushing new technologies, but not anymore...

First to push USB, yet not using USB3.
First to push DVD, yet only person on the planet not using Blu-ray.
First access to some CPUs, yet last to still sell Core 2 Duo (at full premium price)!
First with a nextgen GUI, yet 10 years later it's now looking dated.
Blah blah blah.... Last to implement SD card slots, not yet using SATA3, heck what about built in 3G on MacBooks like we've had with ThinkPads for years?!

You're behind the times Jobs :(

Apple itself has a fairly big and complex website, as well as online Mobile Me, and they manage to do it with zero Flash. So at least they are leading by example. I assume there are quite a few Javascript/CSS/HTML experts at Apple nowadays, they should provide resources to some of the more prominent sites to help nudge them out of Flash. There's a tipping point where it will all go away and I think Apple knows this. If Flash penetration decreases from 98% to even just something like 90%, it's no longer ubiquitous and many developers will quickly bail on it, leading to an inevitable death spiral.

Go Steve! Nice to see Apple continuing to dictate the pace of change. Finally, a company that knows what they're doing in tech.

I'm so tired of Apple telling me what I can and cannot do on a device that I spent hard earned money on, and this is coming from someone who LOVED Apple.

If I want to run my battery down.. LET ME.. its not FOR YOU to decide and be BIG BROTHER. Get a life steve and let your customers choose what they want on their device.

I'm slowly starting to move toward Android & Windows. I'm getting tired of Apple's closed, BIG BROTHER system.. developers are slowing leaving and now customers.

The truth here is quite simple: Flash is the tool used to generate relevant ads for the viewer. Unless and until a suitable replacement is found, ad-supported sites will fight with this. Essentially, Steve Jobs is telling these folks: Look if you want your clients ads to be seen on our devices, you will have to do so without Flash. He'd better be careful, though. I'm not sure the FTC or the DOJ would agree with his methods. If he just left well enough alone, the owners of the ad-revenue sites would eventually catch on. I think he just got impatient after his last health battle. It is quite possible, though, that the DOJ could step in like they did for MS with competing browsers.

I love the people who are defending Flash... I smell Flash developers.

Flash is utter ***** and so is a lot of the content created with it. Now that Youtube has HTML5 beta, I don't visit any websites with flash content. Click To Flash works like a dream.

Also Adobe: Your entire Creative Suite software is bloated like 10 day old beached whale.
