There is no "Flash drive" in the iPhone. It's a Flash memory chip that the OS accesses with its own Flash manager via a Flash memory controller.

The type of NAND Flash memory used in the iPhone could have anywhere from about 20 to 60 MB per second max read speed per die. No idea if they're interleaving access between die, which could double that or more in a larger GB device... but I think someone would've noticed that more memory = more speed in that case.

(The controller chip itself can supposedly go up to 666MB per second, if it's given individual die access to a 256GB array.)

I looked but can't seem to find any file access speed tests for iOS devices. Anyone know of some?

And how did that work out for them? Sales off the charts and highest satisfaction rates ever. The fact is, you are in the minority. Jailbreakers are in the minority.

iTunes might be clunky for some (3, 4 million?) but for the majority of users iTunes is easy to understand. And for a good reason. iTunes always treated your music as music not files (unlike for example, Winamp). You buy your music and that's it. You don't care how or where it is stored. Why should I care anyway?

The days modern Operating Systems exposing file systems to users are limited, so enjoy it while you can. I, for one, am looking forward to the day I don't need to manage files and folders or even see them.

Haha, maybe apple will 'hide' the file systems for good like you claim. However it's still there now.

Windows / linux will always have a full fledged file system, so I'll enjoy it for the rest of my life - thanks.

I don't understand why people (and apple) hate choice so much. Just because an option is there, doesn't mean you have to use it. It doesnt create any extra work for apple to allow an app similar to iFile in the official app store.

However, anything that allows you to avoid itunes must be the devil.

They should let Jobs rest in peace and stop whoring him for everything coming out of Apple. It's pretty pathetic, IMO.

The way some people spin things is pretty pathetic, IMO.

There is zero truth in this post and many others in this thread.

Apple has not and is not "whoring" out the late Steve Jobs name whatsoever. Since his passing Steve's name hasn't been touted by Apple publicly in keynotes, press, ads, nothing.

So why do people post these untruths? Cuz Bloomberg says some source said Steve Jobs was involved in the next iPhone when they where asked? Well, Steve was most likely heavily involved in the next design. What was the source to say when asked? No, Steve didn't work on the next iPhone? Would that of made you people happy?

Really, what's with the drama over Steve working on the next phone and someone confirming that when asked?

You talk like Apple is flying a Steve Jobs flag, using his name for marketing purposes and dropping his name every chance they get.

That's not true. So why all the posts insinuating this is happening? Spin and drama maybe, truth nope.

I for one think that Jobs is getting too much credit and the autism example above is ridiculous, and I personally find it a bit sickening. I have an autistic cousin who can communicate with most people thanks to a computer as most of the time he's pretty silent, but he like's to draw on his computer, looking up images on the internet and pointing at them, and also he reads things from the screen. He also has an Android tablet and a phone which happens to be an iPhone which he always has on his person, but I would never, ever claim that Jobs has changed his life or has allowed him to communicate.
It's computers and electronic devices in general that help such people (and in this case touch-devices), there's nothing special about the iPad, they've just happened to select iPad for those children because it's currently the most popular tablet. It would be interesting to learn which amazing feature hand-crafted by Jobs has made it so great for autistic children. Ironically Android is more accessible because of its openness and my cousin uses two apps which you wouldn't be able to have on an iPad (there's one that sends a text message to his parents when he starts shaking the tablet, no matter which app he has open - not possible in iOS).

No, that's far from world-changing. He might have drastically improved his company though, because first and foremost he's a businessman. He was selling fairly expensive products (note that I'm not saying they are too expensive for what you get, I don't want to start that argument) to people who can afford them (mainly middle class people), and he was very good at it. He was also very passionate about what he was doing and that might have inspired some people.

But the Job's cult/myth is strong and it will be used to promote future products - as we can see in this example. It's a very clever marketing technique, because Apple are amazing at marketing their products, which is one of the reasons they're doing so well. Period.

Look, I'm not saying Jobs invented it himself, but he was able to push it out there for the masses.

Well, you're definitely entitled to think the claim is ridiculous, but I also find it likewise ridiculous that you would assume the claims blanket all autistic children.

I'm sure you well know there are varying degrees of autism (I've worked with children at a YMCA so I'm not completely inexperienced) so maybe it doesn't apply to your son in particular but to disclaim it so fast when there are others who are deeply affected, is jumping to conclusions (to say the least).

There seems to be evidence to support the claim that it's helping others communicate.

Sure, maybe they could do the same tasks on a computer, but the iPad is far more portable so maybe that's where it's helping. I'm sure other tablets help as well, but that particular article references iPads (and given the millions selling per quarter compared to other tablet vendors, I would think it's the vast majority of examples regarding autism).

You are correct - Apple is very savvy at marketing, but people also aren't stupid - they do realize they like products which simply work. I honestly believe that is more critical as to why they are doing well, but I seem to be in the minority. Especially the haters, they all claim it's the marketing. I find the people who 'hate' or 'dislike' Apple are people unwilling to see beyond the initial sticker price. I've seen some friends take a long time to do that and once they did, they always claim, "Why didn't I make the switch sooner!?!?" To which I always reply, " DUH!"

Cheers,
Keebler

I am really excited for the new iPhone. I am hoping for a few things :)

1) OLED Screen
2) Bigger screen, hoping for a screen around 4 inches, but nothing more than that.
3) Higher quality front facing camera for FaceTime.
4) 4G LTE with the ability to FaceTime over cell networks
5) A bigger battery. Closer to that of a Droid Razr Max because the iPhone 4S just isnt as strong as it should be. That goes for 99.9% of smartphones out there right now.

As far as designs for the new iPhone, i like the look of my iPhone 4S, I just want what i listed above in the phone :)

They should engrave "Designed by Steve Jobs" on the back. I'll buy it just knowing that. Also it would be a great Quality Assurance.

but it wasn't and thats disrespectful to all the workers who actually did the engineering and design work

Because they have to say something to make Apple look like a joke of a company. Making up lies is their only recourse!

Most USB flash-based thumb drives are much slower than the USB bus, and flash-based SD cards are usually much slower as well.

High speed SSDs get the speed from using RAID-like parallel reading and writing of multiple flash chips.

I doubt the iPod's internal memory is that same type. However, there are no specs online, so I can't be sure about anything. Someone on this forum said earlier that his old iPod was much faster over FireWire than over USB, but he did not actually do real tests.

Here is a pic. The long-term flash storage is on the bottom:
post-26638-1266674717.jpg

I searched that part (Samsung K9MCG08U5M) on Google, but I couldn't find any performance specs.

I searched that part (Samsung K9MCG08U5M) on Google, but I couldn't find any performance specs.

The datasheet can be downloaded here. (Click on the big K9MCG08U5M halfway down on the right.)

From the minimum read timing, it tops out at 33 MB/sec for a sequential read.

This was the original type of chip that Apple used... comparatively inexpensive because it was only good for about 5,000 erase/write cycles. (Not the 100,000 that's common on some other Flash devices.) Which was okay, because nobody totally rewrites all their files every few hours, but it's also why Apple never used the file system to cache web pages... only what would fit in RAM.

Each chip could also come with a section of memory bad from the factory and still pass. Which is probably partly why Apple came up with the "Other" category to help hide the differences. Nobody wants to know that their devices had MBs less than someone else's... so they made everyone's the same.

Maybe it does create extra work and maybe it is the biggest expense in ITC world: customer support.
Have you ever tried to teach anybody over 60 years and not IT or engineering genius?
It takes hours to go through simple things and usually you have do it several times before it's in user's spline.
If Apple made iFile or any other software with medium IT skills needed, they'd have to give several millions of support hours for clueless new buyers or apple care holders.
Maybe this is why they try to design everything to "moron level" and making complex things to simple is never insanely simple.

6) FM transceiver. Most phones have had this for years and I feel stupid when the most expensive iphone stutters with buffering net radio and at the same time the cheap ipod has FM radio. Also, the easiest way to listen iphone through couple of billions of FM receivers on the planet, would be sending the audio through FM waves. Many phones have had this for so long time...

Apple provides support for 3rd party apps? This is news to me. Although I do agree that apple seems to have a certain disdain for advanced or even medium users.

And yes, actually I have provided assistance to many seniors for the use of windows and such.

I teach a weekly class at my local senior center. While some have trouble, many are able to pull photos from their cameras to their computer using traditional file systems (windows explorer).

I wouldn't trust a company that releases products devised 10 years in advance.

It's quite possible for someone to conceive of ideas where the technology isn't there yet. They were talking about large-screen TVs that would hang flat on the wall 60 years ago. We wouldn't have them if people hadn't been working on the long before they became commercially viable.

It's not as if Jobs had 10 years of production-ready units sitting in his garage. It's more like, "OK, when screen technology is at point a, and memory is at b, and battery is at c, then we can introduce a phone that does d."

There is a certain, specific demographic that engages in hero worship. Not just those who worshipped Steve Jobs, but all kinds of different high profile people.

Therefore it's only normal for hero worshippers to live vicariously through their heroes. It causes no harm other than to be a bit of an annoyance to people who don't have a need to rely on others.

Just look at how well it's worked for Apple & the effect it continues to have. Jobs was the highly influential person that could convince people of whatever he wanted to. It's still selling product today. You can't beat that.

Lots of empires are built around one charismatic person that's mastered the art of influence. It's all around us.

As far as iPhone 5 or whatever they end up calling it, I don't care about who designed it, or if Jobs was involved. Nor do I have any expectations.

Apple has proven to me, year after year, they do what they want, and rely on the worshippers to be their promoters.

Time for a REALITY CHECK!

The US auto manufacturing industry didn't lose all their business to Japanese car manufacturers because US citizens "worship" the Japanese. They lost massive sales because the products were far superior - period - plain and simple.

Scant few people are going to spend their hard earned money any box or widget due to some imaginary "hero worship" the paranoids may prop up as the driving force behind some kind of alleged cult. They won't even spend money to support their own country's economy, local economy, manufacturing or employment (as in the auto manufacturing example).

Spending usually goes one of two ways - cheapest possible - or best product possible. It's a free market. The buyers decide.

Apple DOES do what they want - but don't assume there is no market research or long term plan, when in fact it is that very plan that's been the catalyst of their success. It's their vision, superior products and risk taking that has kept them years ahead of the curve of the rest. If buyers love the products - why wouldn't they tell their friends? Meanwhile don't forget the iconic work of their marketing/creative teams as well. Combine it all and it's simply a winning formula.

I own the HTC EVO 4G phone BTW - but give me that size display on an iPhone, and I would probably switch.

Next iPhone 960x1440 (3x of 320x480), Maybe

Did anyone think of the fact that now all the phone are having higher res and ppi (..and larger screen) than iphone4,4s. What would be the counter measure for Apple?
I think, the way they doubled the resolution on both sides, they can easily triple it from the original iphone to get 960x1440, which is i guess pretty much doable. Without changing the aspect ratio and also without breaking any comaptilibity with existing app.
They just need to scaled 3x in both directions!

Steve Jobs will be the new Tupac. Everything that Apple produces over the next 20 years will have been "conceived," "worked on," "thought of," and "pondered" by Steve Jobs.

I find the people who 'hate' or 'dislike' Apple are people unwilling to see beyond the initial sticker price.

I find the people who think Apple can do no wrong/hard and can equate creation of consumer electronic gadgets to advances in medicine are a bit myopic.

Unfortunately, I'm not smart or talented enough in the respective areas, but I'd rather be a Jonas Salk than a Steve Jobs any day.

I think you'll find there are many serious long time Apple users who would agree with you on this point (I'm not referring to the point that you're not smart or talented enough):D

I'm glad to hear that your "reality" works for you :)

Why?

Perhaps, some of these questions have already been answered before. FYI, I have a 3GS and have been waiting for a larger screen to debut on the iPhone (since I really don't want to go to Android and live separate mobile lives)...but:

1 - Why is it so difficult for Apple to design/accept a larger screen size for the iPhone? We have an iPad, with a different resolution that conforms to the 'amazing, mystical' retina requirements (e.g. ppi, etc). Then, their are rumors of the iPad 7". So, hey, we can go 7"! ;)

Also, why would a 'taller' iPhone settle this argument? Wouldn't that create totally non-proportional resolutions, and make things worse for app developers, etc.?

2- Maybe this is a simpler bullet, but Angry Birds (for example) is on every fricking smartphone...of every screen resolution, ppi, display size, etc...in the Android world, for instance. It's on iPad 10" and will be on iPad 7"...so...what is the issue? What am I missing? (Seriously, I plead ignorance on this; so can anyone explain it, in brief?).

3 - Yes, I have heard the 'I don't care' remark about the screen size (perhaps they use their iPads more for 'larger screen' tasks and therefore don't care?). Fine...make a SMALLER phone for them (some even say that! :)) and make a second iPhone, like the rumored iPad 7" as the alternative to the 10"...there IS a market for that, and they need to use it. Every phone coming out is larger for a reason. The market demands it.

Samsung has how many models? LG? So, come out with an iPhone that is 4.5"+ and keep the damn 3.5" for those that don't care or want it small.

I have seen the light with the Samsung Note. (5.3" screen size)..it's pretty much the largest that I could use as a phone. Great...so that has been determined, the race is over for 'who can make the largest thing they call a phone'. In fact, it's a little too large (but, good for NBA players!)...so i'd say 4.5-4.8" is optimal, and I ~might~ try a 5" if it was compact (no bezel, thin).

4" screen is not enough...'tall' proportion is not acceptable (and again, how is it helpful to proportionality/aspect ratio?). If Apple does this, it will be 5+ years before they change it again...and by the end of this year, myself and others will be making a big choice on whether to move to android -phone-wise.

Apple...4.5"+ or bust! The market is demanding it!

Oh come on, is this another "Steve was right from the start, he was just MISDIRECTING" kinda' thing?

Well, the guy is not infallible (Cube, Hippie Bubble iMacs, lack of CD burners in iMacs, etc.), but he was either watching the market and adjusting accordingly or telling his competitors the wrong thing (nobody wants video on an iPod...)... or both. To assume he didn't do both would be silly.

Hang on, dear 3GS, hang on...

I'm right there with you. Never really liked the form factor of the 4/4S compared to my 3GS. If Apple can keep the overall size of the new iPhone about the same and while increasing screen size to 4" and getting a little more ergonomic...I'm totally in.

Morethanrumours
Statements:
1) The new iphone that Apple will release somewhere in between the next few months, will revolutionalize the mobile industry, the way the first iphone did. Apart from the "regular" updates it will receive, it will introduce a new kind of "concept".
2) Apple is preparing for its biggest release ever with many surprises on the opening day. Steve Jobs was working for at least two years on the concept of iphone "5". It is rumoured that Apple will introduce the new Facetime by broadcasting a direct feed of a prerecorded Steve Jobs video message. Steve Jobs will introduce the iphone 5 concept and pay his final "tribute".

Reading into my post a bit much you are.

I've never said they can do no wrong nor did i claim they create advances similar to medicine. Obviously the latter trumps all.

I was merely referring to the articles posted and suggesting there is merit to those articles which claim that it can help those folks with autism.

I sure wish there were far more Jonas Salks in the world. But then again, it's the private industry drug companies which wouldn't allow for their achievements to be utilized, unless of course, those companies had a way to monetize the medicine.

Dear Apple,

I am ready to spend my hard earned money, so hurry up.

The home button on my iPhone4 is about to give up completely, and I am bored. Give me more.

Man I hate waiting.

Love, Jeff
