File explorer? Those things are outdated. THe reason iOS is so simple and easy to use is due to lack of a file system. Any file you need can and should be directly accessed from whatever app you use.

Outdated?

To be able to drag and drop files (music, videos, pictures) to and from a windows or mac folder would be awesome.

I am not the only one that feels this way either. I had previously owned 5 Android phones and to come over to iOS' file system is still jarring to this day. On the Android phone it would take me a few seconds to move files to and from the device to my PC/MAC. With my iPhone and damn iTunes (even on my Mac), I end up waiting sometimes 1 minute for syncing. Unacceptable.

A file explorer, a way to drag and drop files much more easily will drastically improve the usability of the device making it more intuitive to use in daily life

I agree. In 2007 it was ok to not have a file browser in iOS. But this is 2012 and it's time they revamp some of the core ideas and UI.

Im really hoping Apple implements some sort of Airdrop feature in iOS, but I won't hold my breath.

I think you need to stay with android if yo want a file system. It's totally counter to what apple is trying to do with ios.

I wouldn't be surprised if he, knowing his time was short, recorded some video to be played at the event. Imagine Tim Cook saying "One more thing...", and it'd be Steve Jobs on the screen introducing HIS "One More Thing".

Nice to imagine.

No, that would be creepy.

Interesting perspective for someone spending his time on a product rumor site.

I don't spend my time here in hopes of finding humanity's future or salvation. Should every one of my waking moments be dedicated to some kind of pursuit of greatness or something ?

Are you saying that anyone that buys products or is interested in technology has to think "Products" are what change the world ? Why does everything need to be so polarized in your lives ? I accept that my interest in products is not what is going to move the world forward. Doesn't mean I'll stop being interested in them. I just don't look for deeper meaning or a great cause in the purchase of my smartphone.

3.5 is perfect for a phone. If Steve thought 4 was good, that's great. I still rather have 3.5.

Uh... No its not. 3.5 is dinky. I loved my iPhone 4, but when the 4S came out I jumped ship to a Galaxy SII and now when I look an iPhone it looks like a tiny toy to me. I love the screen on the Samsungs and HTCs but really want to come back to Apple. But I won't even think about it until the display gets up to par with the rest of the phone tech world. Yes it's retina, but for me, it's way too small.

Exactly. To get around the dreadful iTunes I prefer to transfer files with Dropbox. With a file explorer I could simply share a folder and transfer whatever file via wifi or Bluetooth.

I understand that iOS should be simple. But it's enough to be simple on the surface, and still have more advanced features for users who want them.

IMHO, the biggest advantage of ios is that don't have to meddle with the system, and the biggest disadvantage is that I can't meddle with the system.

Oh, first world problems...

I love the size and shape of the iPhone 4. If the 5 is TOO different without some major benefits, I might use my upgrade on a 4S.

That being said, the best screen upgrade I can ask for on the current model would be a frameless edge-to-edge screen. The glass surface is about 5.7cm wide, while the illuminated portion of the screen is only 4.9cm. If they could deliver a screen that fills the entire width and kept the same aspect ratio, it would be a 16% increase but, more importantly, be the sexiest front-side of a mobile device ever seen.

If that was possible, with a bump in CPU/RAM, I'd be happy. It could be slightly thinner/lighter too :)

As a long time Apple user (20 years) I find this weird adulation of Steve Jobs really rather distasteful. People who didn't know him referring to him as "Steve" as if they knew him (you didn't), projecting all sorts of character traits and, I'm sorry, putting him on some kind of pedestal. It's a little over the top.

Yep, a great CEO, one with vision and Apple, under his stewardship, produced some great products but people need to get over themselves. His death is a personal tragedy to those who actually knew him but really, enough already of this borderline cultish worship at the altar that is Apple and now, since his untimely death, personified in Steve Jobs.

3.5 is optimal. If they change it, it will be less optimal.
If they make it bigger, it will be more optimal. If they make it smaller, it will be less optimal. I now carry a 5.3" Galaxy Note, which is optimal for a 6-3 220lb guy... like me.

Ain't that the truth. Prepare to be down voted for such blasphemy though :)

Not a surprise that he would have been involved in this design
These would be in the works for a while

I just hope it isn't the "tall" design in the mock ups

I'm thinking the "tall" design is what we'll get. Steve said 3.5" was the right size for a phone for the very reason that the width is what you need to easily type. If they can avoid changing that, they will. I honestly expect a taller, 4" iPhone this year. Although i'd prefer it to be a tiny bit wider to keep the proportions close to what they are now.

Can someone please explain why a file explorer is outdated? Just because Apple chose not to use it in iOS.

"Steve Jobs was deeply involved with the design of the iPhone 5"

"We've always been at war with Eastasia"

Who said it was a terrible idea? Most of us have long wanted a 4" screen. We mock the ridiculous mini-tablets that android phones have become, but who ever said anything bigger than 3.5 is terrible?

Its certainly been a common theme in the past here to hate on anything larger than the iPhones 3.5" screen.

Go read previous news stories here.

No, it wouldn't improve usability. Your problem, just like with every single nerd out there, is that you are thinking from your own point of view. Not the avg. joe who the iPhone or iPad targets. Music shouldn't be thought of as files. Just like your documents shouldn't be thought of as files. If I want to transfer "music" to my iPhone, I don't want to drag anything and don't want to see any files nor deal with "Windows" and "Explorers".

It is amazing how difficult it is for nerds to let go of old metaphors. iOS is doing everything in the way things should have been done 30 years ago. iTunes needs some improvements, yes. But exposing stupid "files", "explorers", and "filesystems" is getting it backwards.

Having the option there wouldn't hurt the simpletons.

I find iTunes performs worse than traditional file systems

I love the jailbroken app iFile

IOS has a file system, apple just doesn't let you see it
