I can take my sim out of my 6S and use it in my Nexus 4 and download the same exact app with no restrictions.

What does the carrier have to do with it? I said the carrier would be the more logical target, not that the carrier was responsible for the stupid person.

iOS has the restriction so that Apple doesn't have to listen to the whiners about their data usage. Wasn't that easy?

Please stop defending this archaic and restrictive "feature". I, not Apple, should be fully responsible for how I use my data. I pay for this data, unlimited or not. I can decide if I want to expend it how I want.

I don't know why people have such a hard time understanding why Apple would restrict this and why Google isn't relevant to whether an Android phone would restrict this.

Let's try one last time.

Apple owns the whole stack. The idiocy about WiFi Assist points out that the stupid will blame Apple for their inability to pay attention to their own data usage.

Google is responsible for Android, but probably one in ten actually associates Google with their Android phone. It's a Samsung, or an LG, or etc. If Google introduced a comparable feature to WiFi Assist into Android, the stupid would go after Samsung or LG, not Google.

Never mind that in both cases, the more correct target would be the carrier.

So yes. It seems entirely reasonable that Apple would put such a simple restriction in place. And no, all toggles in configuration settings are admissions that you can't get the defaults right. Put a toggle there, the stupid will turn it off, then whine about it.
Something like WiFi Assist has been around for various Android phones for some time now actually.

You should. But when there are so many irresponsible people out there (even if just inadvertently), examplified not just by all kinds of complaints about things that people should themselves be responsible for, but even lawsuits, it's not all that irrational for limitations to be put in place here or there to avoid more of these types of issues (unfortunately often at the cost of what responsible people can do). It's present everywhere, even in all kinds of laws, regulations, product warnings, etc. I'm not necessarily saying that's behind it all in this case, or that it's right or good, just commenting on that aspect of it. That said, whether or not anyone here defends this or that or attacks this or that, it's all meaningless as far as anything actually changing as Apple are the only ones that can do it and they do it based on their own reasoning (whatever it might or might not be).

Defending? No. I have a brain, I too can decide what I want to use and for what. But I understand it, I recognize that as a group people are stupid, and lose no sleep over this service limitation.

Are you two REALLY REALLY suggesting that Apple SHOULD control/restrict our data use just because of some people might accidentally use up their data? And that Apple does this to "defend" themselves?

Guess what? (Irresponsible) People still use up all their data a month regardless of this benefit/feature. So what now? Where's the guy who's blaming Apple?

Stop pretending that this can actually pose some sort of harm to anyone. Its preposterous that this is still baked into iOS.

PS. If Apple was so worried or inclined they should know that Android has a native/built-in function that not only limits data usage but can also send a warning too.

Please read the last few sentences of my post that you quoted as I explicitly pre-emotively addressed all of that.

Thank you but I already read that. I would like to be one of the people to press on this bruise until Apple gives a response as to why and I would be glad if you would like to join me in requesting answers. If no, that's fine.

There's no logical defense for the 100mb limit in an age with 80 mb/s LTE speeds and two of the largest NA carriers offering unlimited data services. And you can bet your pants that foreign cellular providers have unlimited data plans too.

My father lives in a rural location with no access to broadband connections. As such I bought him an iPad with a 10gb monthly 3G data plan as his primary internet connection. He can get about 2 bars by the window.

The iPad is stuck on iOS 7 because he can't update it. No neighbours have wifi and no local public places have complimentary/paid wifi.

That's not really the part that I was referencing in reply to your last post. As far as it goes for the part about pressing Apple on the issue, certainly feel free to do it, although agreement or disagreement between people here and simply just talking about it here won't do any of that.

Oh please. You know that's not the same thing a this. I'm insulted that you thought this would fly and I'm disappointed in you.
Unfortunately it's all very much along the same lines. Ignoring it or pretending that it doesn't exist or isn't relevant doesn't change the reality of it all still being there and potentially playing a role.

Please accept my apologies. In reply to "although agreement or disagreement between people here and simply just talking about it here won't do any of that", talking about this is important posting this thread and discussing this exposes this to more people until enough is enough. And if I can convince someone that this is wrong, then its one more voice to add to the rest.

It costs very little to me to talk about this with you and to have people read over my posts.

Wifi Assist turns on be default and it isn't clearly labeled or explained what it does. Also, its somewhat hidden in the menu. You have to go to Settings, Cellular and then scroll to the very bottom to turn off Wifi Assist.

These people, who otherwise could have been in control of their data usage, ended up with overrage charges.

I was honestly surprised that Apple exposed a control for Wifi Assist, rather than just re-tuning the algorithm the phone was already using and being silent about it. That was stupid on *their* part.

It's EXACTLY the same thing, people not taking responsibility for themselves. It points out that the stupids will use the legal system to avoid having to be accountable. But here, Apple HAS put a control on it to stop them.

But agreement won't get anything changed, there needs to be something beyond that for there to even be a chance for it to mean anything more than just a random conversation.

What the ****? Wifi Assist, by default upon update, is turned on and its not clearly explained what it does. To deactivate it you have to scroll down to the bottom of the Cellular settings. Past all the other settings like hotspot and data roaming. So how the hell can you say those people were being irresponsible. Some of them could have been responsible with their data usage but wifi assist uses data whenever wifi strength is low and it works in the background. It doesn't display in the notification bar when wifi assist is being used as in when you are connected to wifi and data is being consumed. So there was no way people can know if data is being used under wifi assist.

You are either intentionally disregarding these facts or you were ignorant to them in the first place.

Of course. But the more exposure the more likely action will happen.

Does that show anything about how many have unlimited data?

i would like to believe there are ALOT since verizon doesn't throttle you, so anyone with a verizon unlimited data pretty much fit in that pool.

but my response is not about how many, but to prove that that its not a plain lie like that guy stated.

Seems like that part was in refrence to how many.

if he is asking how many, i think my answer nevertheless answered his question. basically anyone still have unlimited on verizon is not being throttled. i avg 500-600gb data with speed of 45mb/s on speedtest.

I personally think it was stupid to enable it by default as part of an OS update with no warning whatsoever. Most normal people don't spend their time fiddling with the myriad of different settings and options available to them on their iOS devices. And average users certainly don't go hunting around for new settings when they update their OS.

I also think the blanket 100mb cap is stupid. By all means keep it on by default for most people, just as they should have been most cautious with the WiFi Assist feature. But give those who want the freedom to download whatever they want over cellular the ability to do just that. Some people have the data plan on their devices as the only way to get internet in their homes. Why the hell should they be limited to downloading apps that are smaller in size than 100mb? It's insane given where we are now.

It's hard to say if anyone is or isn't being throttled based in some individual anecdotal information. It's also hard to say that many people really have unlimited (compared to those who don't) based on that as well.

anyone who thinks that 100mb is a smart choice, please tell me what is the difference here:

a) i cant download an app over 100mb from appstore.
b) i can download atleast two apps when both are 99mb causing atleast 198mb used data.

c) i can watch vids without limits, hundreds of mbs/gbs used easily in a day.

the restriction only makes your life more difficult. e.g. i was out of luck once when i needed to download an app from appstore, but i couldnt because it was over 100mb. while i could have been more productive on those hours (doing work stuff), this stupid restriction set the bound what i was able to do and what i wasnt with my productivity tool, ipad.

if you are really defending that 100mb limit used in appstore because there are people who needs to be protected themselves, then apple should set 100mb limits for all cellular data usage.

apple should copy this feature from android: you can set the limit by yourself and it is even warning when you get close to the limit.

Not only is there a warning you can set a hard limit and it will turn your cell data off. Honestly Apple has the crappiest information system for cell data compared to Android and Windows Phone.

Apple also had no way of indicating a wireless connection is metered either. OS X has the same problem.
