Why are you ignoring the fact that this has already been discussed and refuted?
Because at that point your splitting hairs. Don't say the iPhone doesn't have one, when it does. If it's not the way you want it, that's your opinion but the fact is the iPhone has an LED indicator end of discussion.

And in what way was this refuted?

No, it does not.

No, it does not have an indicator and it most certainly is not the end of the discussion.

No, it does not. No, it does not have an indicator and it most certainly is not the end of the discussion.
Your making a fools argument because you know you're wrong, you have no argument other than to say "No" and have no reasoning to back up your claim. When you get a notification, the rear LED light flashes to indicate you have a new notification. Thus it has an LED indicator. This is pretty basic reasoning.

And again, when was this refuted?

Agreed. If an led, any led, on the phone flashed to provide a notification or indication of something being missed, that's an led notification/indicator. Lol

The point went right over your head.

Even when my ringer is on High, sometimes I do not hear the phone ring. Sometimes I am washing the dishes or in the shower or doing something that covers up the volume of the ringer when I am in another room.

I hate the fact that every single time I return to wherever my iPhone is, I have to physically check the device. It's silly and unnecessary.

Further, as Murphy's Law will tell you, the 1 time that I forget to check the phone is when I receive an important but unexpected call, which I don't see for many hours until I decide to use the phone.

There is absolutely NO reason not to have some type of new call reminder, even a beep every 5-10 minutes would be good. It can be an option so people like you can turn it off. It's Win-Win (except for the people who are only looking to complain).

At no point, did any actual point go over my head. I illustrated FOUR different notification methods on the iPhone, including an LED indicator. There is NO need for Apple to consume crucial internal space by adding a FIFTH indicator. It would be an exceptionally poor design tradeoff.

Incorrect. The point went right over your head and you are still not able to recognize it.

I illustrated FOUR different notification methods on the iPhone, including an LED indicator.
No, none of them apply, which is why I said the point went right over your head.

There is NO need for Apple to consume crucial internal space by adding a FIFTH indicator. It would be an exceptionally poor design tradeoff.
This is a silly theory and the vast majority of consumers disagree with you. There are probably only about 100 people who feel the way you do, and it's mostly just to complain and incite trouble on internet forums.

I'm late to the discussion but am I missing a setting on my phone?

1) I turned on this mystical LED feature under accessibility
2) I called my number and let it ring until it rolled to voicemail
3) I hung up

At no point after that sequence did I see a flashing light, hear a vibration... Nothing. The only way to tell that I had missed a call is to pick up the phone and press the home button to illuminate the screen.

What am I doing wrong?

Nothing. It just doesn't work. And even if it did, no one would be able to see it unless they kept their phone face down at all times.

Thats funny I just turned it on and texted myself. Immediately a nice little strobe pattern alerted me to my new message.

This thread has been very entertaining.. oh and we need to bring back the downvote button!

There seems to be a lot of people confused about OP's meaning of an LED indicator. Yes, the iPhone has a LED that can be set to flash when something comes through, but it doesn't function as an 'notification/indicator' as the OP intended. What he's suggesting, is a gentle pulsating/blinking light that continues when there's a new message until the phone is checked.

The current iPhone LED flash is not a substitute for this feature because if you are not physically there to hear the ring/vibrate, you won't see the LED flash either so when you return to your phone, you'll still have to turn it on to see if you have missed messages/calls whereas if there is a LED indicator feature, you can just glance at your phone and know you didn't miss any important call/messages without having to turn it on.

It's a nice feature to have and I'm all for anything to improve upon an already awesome phone. :apple:

What am I doing wrong?

I agree what am I doing wrong as well then?

I used Android phones for about 2-3 years prior to my iPhone 4S. I tell everyone making the switch that there are 3 draw backs (or at least there were):

1. Screen size: Coming from a 4.3" screen down to a 3.5" was a little rough with my fat fingers. My iPhone 5 due to arrive on Friday fixes that (4" to 4.3" is almost negligible)

2. Integrated Maps: The google maps even on my Droid X (running Android 2.2) had a much better Google Maps app when it came to turn by turn directions. Yes you can use other map programs, but ask Siri to get you directions and she will always use the google maps app instead of the other GPS software I have on my phone. This is fixed with iOS 6.

3. LED indicator: Don't tell me you can turn on the LED flash in the back, because it has never worked for me. I miss the little flashing light on my Android to tell me I missed something while I was away (i.e. in the bathroom, or in a meeting, etc) without having to turn on the screen. It's a little thing, but it was nice. This is the last item I miss. I've gotten over it in the last year, but it was the one thing my Droid X had on my iPhone.

Thank you! Very well explained. I miss this from my Androids....

Other than deaf pople, who cares of there is a strobe when the phone is ringing?

The point is that there needs to be some type of indication of a missed called when you return to your phone. Not everyone revolves their entire life around their iPhone, carries it with them every second of the day. Some of us don't take it into the bathroom with us nor do we want to have to physically check it EVERY TIME that we return to it.

This is an incredibly simple thing, and it could be an option as well so the ONLY people who would oppose it are elitist, arrogant, troublemakers looking to start fights on forums. Of course someone like that would want to "bring back the downvote button".

But did the strobe persist long after the initial alert? That's what we want. I want to know that when I was away from my phone, that I missed a phone call or a text. Believe it or not, some of us don't take our phones into the bathroom with us!

Some of us don't take it into the bathroom with us .

Funny how we both used the exact same justification..... :)

Yeah, we do - because you didn't do what I did, and then proclaimed that your results are different. That's a shocker. Jeez...

No persistent alerts for voicemails or missed calls. Get it now?

Yes, because we are both using logic :)

Nothing. It just doesn't work. And even if it did, no one would be able to see it unless they kept their phone face down at all times.

And if there was any other indicator, then you would have to use the phone without a case... or have the indicator pointed at you at all times... or have it bright enough that you could see it in the next room...

There are going to always be arguments both ways and no one will ever be satisfied with the answers others give.

And since we are talking about notifications, why can't we have a talking caller ID using Siri???

I understand what you want. I was simply saying that turning on the option worked as expected for me.

I had the feature on my oneX and had no use for it, others may and that is fine but I have every right to not want them to add one. It would have to be completely unnoticeable when it were off for me to not care. Otherwise I don't want some black indicator light just sitting there looking ugly the whole time.

@PostHate your username seems very fitting all of your posts are so negative, try loosening up a little and you will enjoy your time on the internet more.

You are being silly and ignorant. Any case would have a cutout like they do for the speaker, camera, etc. The other things you said are just childish, and you know it.
There are going to always be arguments both ways and no one will ever be satisfied with the answers others give.
That's untrue. There is absolutely nothing about an indicator that would hurt someone, since it can be easily shut off. The ONLY people to complain about it are people looking to complain and start trouble, as you can see in this very thread...
And since we are talking about notifications, why can't we have a talking caller ID using Siri???
Because Apple hasn't made that feature. If enough people ask for it, maybe they will.

No your post made it seem like it didn't work at all. I was simply stating that it worked for its intended purpose. I realize that its purpose and your desires for a notification light are not the same, but you made it sound like it didn't work at all.

I'm not really bothered either way. I personally don't think the majority of people would use it.

I presume if you jailbreak you can have the back LED do what you want it to.

The vast majority would use it.

The few that didn't like the feature could shut it off. Isn't that perfect? It would work for everyone?

Tell me, WHO and WHY would someone turn the feature off? How would it really hurt them? I still got this Nike thing on my 4S that was here on my 3GS. I never even opened it, I have no idea why it's there, but I respect the fact that someone might use it so I don't complain about it. Doesn't that make sense?
