So much of a feature request it has made it so far... oh wait!

Your nose is so far up Apple's ass it's remarkable. It's such a simple and useful feature to implement, yet Apple does not just so they can be "different." It's one thing to buy Apple products and be aware of their drawbacks (me) and another to lap up everything that Apple puts out (you).

People who are against this feature probably never used it. It does not have to be annoyingly bright to serve it purpose (so the iPhone's implementation is horrible and is not comparable to what the OP is talking about).
As a developer I have my hands on the keyboard 90%+ of the time. I always have the phone on the desk while I work. Imagine how annoying it is to have to get my hands off the keyboard, reach for the phone, and turn on the screen. Yes it sounds like a first world problem, but you just won't understand until you actually try it yourself.

Dude seriously when apple adds it on you'll say something else

It's needed. One shouldn't have to turn the screen on to see what's going on.

Apple will call it iLED or something cheesy.

I find it amusing that people think I don't think it is worth it because Apple doesn't have it. How wrong you are. If Apple puts it in, I will still say the same thing, useless "feature".

Sorry to say it, but the S2, has a much elegant way of telling you there is a notification without the need of an LED. Of coarse, yes, you can also depend on sounds of vibration notes.

Ah, my apologies. You come off as an Apple fanboi :D

But in all seriousness, it is a fantastic feature to have. Horses for courses I suppose.

My work phone has an annoying LED light to tell me when I have a voice mail waiting. It would be soo much simpler if I just dialed in to voice mail every time I came back to my desk to check and see if someone left a message.

And that annoying light on my dashboard that tells me when my oil or tire pressure is low. Wouldn't it be so much better for everyone if I just checked these things myself everytime i got in the car? I think the dashboard would be a lot prettier and more elegant without the annoying red lights.

And for that matter, why even have a fuel gauge. I am perfectly capable of logging my miles driven between tanks to know when I need more gas, or I could even use a simple, uncomplicated dipstick to check my gas levels. Geez, what were the car makers thinking when they put that annoying thing in there.

And boy they really screwed the pooch when they put that obnoxious ringer on my home phone. How hard is it really to pick up the phone every few seconds to see if someone is on the other end of the line. Talk about lazy ass people, expecting a device to simplify your life for you. Probably a bunch of no-good welfare layabouts that want a notification light on the iphone.

Thank you...an nice list of alert examples in the real world.

Which is?

(I am genuinely interested to know, it's not a passive agressive question)

I thought of this while I watched the film Objectified last week. Jony Ive spends a couple minutes talking about his obsession with their implementation of indicator LEDs, while panning around a MacBook Pro.

Anyway, I had a Blackberry in '07 before my first iPhone and I kinda miss having one.

sigh, I have been using LED indicator feature since iOS 5

Settings> General>Accessibility>LED Flash for Alerts ;)

They didn't have to put one of those ugly LED's like all the other phones have.

They could have used the one from the macbook, and made it work the same way. It could start to slowly 'pulsate' when you have a text or something. classy.

oh well

I could get used to that!

Is there not a jailbreak tweak to use the LED Flash as an indicator? Or would the high powered flash suck too much battery life...?

I don't know about battery life, but it freaks people out.

Edit: Strange, apparently while I was quoting this post it was deleted. Hmmm....

Because at that point your splitting hairs. Don't say the iPhone doesn't have one, when it does. If it's not the way you want it, that's your opinion but the fact is the iPhone has an LED indicator end of discussion.

And in what way was this refuted?

To use the camera flash is unrealistic and not very helpful. First of all it's an extremely bright flash. I tried it for a day and while it worked I was almost blinded by the damn thing LOL! Also it only flashes one time, so we're back to having to be in the same room when you miss the call. Third you would not see other notifications if you screen came on.

I would love to have an LED notification just for missed calls and texts. There have been many times that I missed calls and didn't realize it until I picked up the phone to use it. I suppose there are many here who constantly hold and fondle their iPhones, but I don't. Ninety percent of the time my phone is on my desk or coffee table. Such a minor feature would be so useful!!

I think the LED Notification would be useful and it would be welcomed from me. BUT it would have to be implemented subtly. I like the idea of having a pulsing home button. And not too subtly that you cannot see it. I tried out a friend's HTC Sensation and while it has an LED Notification, it is hidden along with the speaker grill which was difficult to see. If you've seen the Galaxy Nexus' notification LED now that is something subtle but still easily seen.

I use it too. It sucks.

Why? because it doesn't stay on? The LED light is too strong for me to have on for long periods. I do agree is not as good as BB, but at least it's something. Maybe an upgraded visual alert system will come on the next OS.

1) doesn't stay on (the entire purpose of a notification LED)
2) insanely bright

Right cause I'm sure it would be incredibly complicated to go into settings and turn the light off. I'm still shocked at how people are responding because some would like the OPTION to have a helpful little light.

You're thinking about it from a consumer's perspective which you are correct, is not hard at all.

From a manufacturer's perspective,
- It's worrying about the actual light and which phones have it vs. which doesn't.
- It's programming the feature in place for iOS 6.
- It's doing support for phones where the light breaks but the software still works and making the consumers confused and angry.
- It's about telling the users you now have 170 hours of standby time instead of 225.

Yeah, all of it could be done, but weighing all of that against "well, if the user is going to look at their phone, they will probably just pick it up to turn the screen on," it makes it not worth it.

A small LED light wouldn't have that much of an effect on battery life. Their power consumption is minuscule.

PLUS, when I was using blackberry, I usually would limit it to 30 minutes and the blinking would just stop. And I used apps that could control the dimness and brightness of the LED light.

The only thing I still miss from my past Blackberry days. Six iPhones later and it's still missing...

:sigh: Really? No little blinking LED light on the new iPhone forced you to cry on a forum? You sound like a baby. The blinking light brings happiness and comfort to the baby; once it goes off, the baby cries. Grow up and get over it. It's a piece of technology. Why would you want every phone to have the same options and features? At the end of the day, they would all be the same phone, with different names.

The effort you take to look down at your phone to see if its blinking, if it's on a belt clip, or to reach into your pocket to see if it's blinking, if it's so much effort to hit the home button or lock screen, then you shouldn't own / use a phone. You're basically stating that you are too lazy to push a button, rather you'd have a little Christmas light tell you when you have a notification. Amazing.
