Despite the juvenile nature of your response, I will respond: yes, I am serious. Again, Apple spent years to gain approval of this design. That included redesigns, concessions and expenditures of time, energy and money. It was finally approved. And now a new set of politicians comes along and want to simply scrap the deal that took years to win approval. That isn't business friendly.

It calls for the replacement of the TGIF eyesore. An Apple store would not be emitting foul food odors. It will have community events tied-in to the store going forward. It would go nicely with the new-ish office space in the area.

This about-face is senseless. Will each new administration kill approved projects going forward? If that becomes the standard, progress will never happen.
Putting a retail shop there would be a waste. Apple can just go to a mall.

The City Council didn't think so as they approved Apple's plans after several revisions, concessions and a couple of years of trying. The new members are showboating and may cause a vicious cycle of approval-rejection based on current administration wishes & ideologies.

TGI does not belong there, neither does Apple, it's a public park, plenty of other places to pick from, as I said before in (one of)my former message a kiosk is the only commercial places allowed in a park, people don't mind such small commercial places since they might be thirsty/hungry or want to read a newspaper.
The local government made a miscalculation, people don't want Apple to build a store there.
Apple will take their loses, don't think they will sue the local government.

Not if they move to a mall, they don't need approval from the local government.

If a government makes a mistake, it would be normal for the next one to correct it.

Stockholm's newly elected city council has promised that plans will not proceed for a flagship Apple Store bordering Kungsträdgården, a public park in the city center, according to Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

While the previous city council had approved the plans, the proposed store received some pushback from local residents, as the Kungsträdgården is a popular gathering space with concerts, events, and other activities. The new city council assured those residents that the store will not be built at a press conference today.

Earlier this year, Stockholm residents were invited to share their opinions about the proposed store during a consultation period, according to The Local. Swedish blog Teknikveckan's Peter Esse told MacRumors the city received nearly 1,800 comments about the plans, many containing negative feedback.

According to The Local, critics said the store would block the entrance to the north side of the park and change the environment from an open-air space for public use to a commercialized one. A TGI Fridays restaurant is already located on the spot, but the Apple Store was expected to be larger.

Apple had planned to host its own events and performances in the park, as part of its goal of having its stores double as "town squares."

Apple retail chief Angela Ahrendts confirmed the company's plans to open a store in Stockholm in February 2016, in a statement provided to Swedish newspaper Expressen. That report said Apple hoped to open the store within two years, but construction never began due to a series of roadblocks and delays.

Renders of the store released by Apple and architecture firm Foster + Partners indicated that it would be situated on the north side of the park, taking over the location of a TGI Fridays restaurant. The store's design would resemble the Apple Park Visitor Center and Apple Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

It's unclear if Apple will accept the decision or try to push forward with its plans, as it has with its proposed store at Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia. Apple did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

Jeeeebus hyper consumerism. I mean I’m an Apple product fan but their push into a public space is just too much. I hate going to the Apple store these days. Do we really want to make that happen to neutral area. How about an Apple store in Central Park or an Apple store in Grand Canyon.

Well, there would be more space in Central Park but you need the trees.

It should also not become a mall.

As someone who lives next to Central Park and walks our dogs there every day, I have bad news for you: there are commercial stores in Central Park already: like the Le Pain Quotidien between 72nd street & Sheep's Meadow. Granted Apple has no need to: the Fifth Ave. Apple Store for instance is right next to Central Park.

I side with the council on this..

For someone who only cares about 'getting users into the store' Apple is being a bit blind..

Leave the park as is.. Apple can find other places to build. It's a gathering spot isn't it, why destroy it?

It's like taking down a stadium to build an Apple store... Good god!

Thank you Cindori. I didn't know that the park was already filthy. Without the knowledge that something unbelievably ugly is currently standing there, I would have rejected the Apple architecture. So I find Apple's Tupperware design a little less disturbing.

Is this a joke? An Apple store in the middle of the park? What was Apple thinking? If you look at the original drawings, Apple wanted all their promotional items facing into the park. They were forced to change that ridiculous thought bubble. The next drawings still weren't accepted and the public unanimously rejected the plan. Apple is confused. This store had nothing to do with creating a new space for public, but instead to fulfil Apple's need for overt domination and attention seeking and brand promotion.

But this is about the locals opinion. They fully reject the plans. They prefer their unique architecture over an attention seeking dominant Apple store.
[doublepost=1539410049][/doublepost]Yah! Now Microsoft and Samsung can apply to the Swedish council to build a store in Kungsträdgården. Viva public space domination by unwelcome guests. This plan by Apple was completely bananas. Glad the people spoke up and put an end to bad actors in Cupertino. One step too far in the wrong direction.
Apple's plan is like malware for a public park.

[doublepost=1539410259][/doublepost]If there's one thing we know about Apple retail today is that it does not respect the people and the cities of countries that it attempts to establish in. This shouldn't have been a three year fight for the local Swedes.

When I first read this story it reminded me so much of the current drama with Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia. In both cases there seems to be massive public opposition to a company that (generally) makes really nice stores with lots of glass, trees and performance spaces (in the bigger stores) – despite I might add, both areas already being commercialised in some other way.

In Melbourne, we already have a small 7-Eleven and in Stockholm it appears a TGIF. I guess the difference to Melbourne is that at the end of the day, the TGIF will no longer exist at all, while in Australia we'll probably never get rid of the 7-Eleven, a business that until recently was underpaying their workers by a huge amount (yet there doesn't appear to be any move to kick them out of the square).

Current (TGI Restaurant) and planned Apple Store render

It looks much better, but as someone else said, while the Apple store proposed beats the TGIF hands down, having pure open space is even better. Perhaps they should consider a subterranean space to allow for unobstructed views at street level, similar to Milan, because if it works in that beautiful city, why wouldn't it work elsewhere?

My Swedish friends would hate any kind of commercial anything there.
The New York equivalent is an Apple store in Central Park.

The fact that there is a fugly TGI at the moment (that is going down anyway) doesn’t make the Apple Tupperware box a better fit. Public parks are really important for a city and combined with the right commercial venues it becomes even better. A sandwich/juice place for the summer or a cafe with some warmth for the winter after skating, a kiosk with a coffee to go, those kind of places liven up a place.
If the Apple store is there, the park will be dark and empty after closing hours, giving it an industrial estate feeling.
The Apple Townsquare concept is out of place here, IMHO.
The apple town square in Chicago is really nice, it fits there, belongs there, adds human size to the place, opens up the river bank and makes the place better. Also the design is able to shine there. But not in Kungsträdgården.

In the Netherlands there are only 3 apple stores, two of them are built right into historic buildings with respect for the building even though they completely tore out the interiors and fitted the white/smooth/glass Apple interiors. They have the Apple design all over them, but also fit in and respect the building and neighborhood. (The third is just in a regular shopping street and has the shoebox design. It’s nice and all, but doesn’t work like the two others).

I pass by the park every day to work. The restaurant is already a painful eyesore, replacing it with an Apple Store is even worse. If Apple wants to put one of its stores in central Stockholm, then they should rent out one of the buildings nearby. There's more than enough commercial space around the park for everyone. In fact, they should take down the restaurant as well, the park should stay a park.

If they changed the application to a mosque it would be approved straight away.

Wow, glad they blocked that! Its crazy to have a nice public space like that lead to a Apple store.. should be a museum or something historic... not a store!

When I first heard of the plans, I thought it would have been nice with the glass cube style Apple store there, with most of the store underground, as we've seen before.

But when I saw these plans I thought it was a bit too much. Yes, the TGIF restaurant already at the spot is an abomination and honestly looks a lot worse than the proposed store, but two wrongs don't make a right.

It would be nice with an Apple store in central Stockholm, it's a bit odd there's none yet, but they need to find a better solution.

FORGET SWEDEN, APPLE!
It's about time that you FINALLY open an Apple Store in Copenhagen ... oh, and yes, if you should have forgotten, that's the capitol of the Kingdom of Denmark, EU

Purely supposition but maybe Apple believes that Hyllie Emporia serves the needs of residents of both Copenhagen and Malmö.
