Well it was hurting those that use F keys.
How was the TouchBar hurting people, like me, who use Function keys? For Apps that worked with Function keys I set the TouchBar to be function keys. For apps that had legitimate functionality with the TouchBar I used the TouchBar. Taking away the TouchBar is taking away options and function.

As is, I might add, taking away a USB Type C connector. Many people whine about dongles but I have really appreciated having 4 ports that could be anything I needed them to be, at any time, on either side of my computer. I will not be celebrating losing a versatile port for an SD card reader I hardly ever use and an HDMI port fixed on one side of the computer that serves no other purpose.

It seems like we are back in the days of the horse and buggy with everyone celebrating a faster horse instead of those new fangled car things. “I don’t have to put gas in my horse so the horse is better!”

Virtue signaling is getting out of control. Information leaked. It happens in this world. I'd be surprised if MacRumors DIDN'T post this article now that it is out there. The information is already out into the world and no one even knows if it's accurate or not. It's all just SPECULATION. Which is part of the fun we have on here but some of us need to chill the heck out....

You want a higher standard? Disconnect from the internet and best of luck!

So for those of you that want mag safe back, so did i until I bought a magnetic connector on Amazon. Works beautifully with USB-C.
That's cool. But I'd rather have a purpose-built Apple connector than having to rely on some third-party add on to replace that lost functionality.

If MagSafe is truly coming back, my only wish is that they make the cable separate from the charging brick this time. Ideally, it would have USB-C on the other end, even.

Schematics stolen from Apple supplier Quanta Computer outline Apple's plans for the next-generation MacBook Pro models that are expected in 2021, and clearly confirm plans for additional ports and a return to MagSafe.

Ports-2021-MacBook-Pro-Mockup-Feature-1-copy.jpg

MacRumors saw the schematics after they were leaked online, and some of them feature the logic board of the next-generation MacBook Pro. On the right side of the machine, there's a visible HDMI port, accompanied by a USB-C/Thunderbolt port and followed by an SD Card reader. The left side features two additional USB-C/Thunderbolt ports and a MagSafe charging slot, for a total of three USB-C/Thunderbolt ports instead of four as we have today.

Rumors from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg have previously said that all of these ports will be coming to the 2021 MacBook Pro models, but the schematics both confirm the addition of the new ports and give us insight into their positioning.

The codename for the Mac is "J316," which suggests that the logic board that we've seen is for the 16-inch MacBook Pro. There's also a "J314" model that likely correlates to the 14-inch MacBook Pro that Apple is also rumored to be working on. Both machines are expected to feature the new ports, MagSafe charging option, and upgraded Apple silicon chips.

This information, which was also shared by 9to5Mac, comes from a ransomware group called REvil, which claims to have accessed the internal computers of Apple supplier Quanta Computer.

Along with the logic board layout, the documentation includes deeply technical listings of MacBook components and layouts that may ultimately provide additional information on these machines as it's parsed. Leaked images of the new MacBook Pro floating around on Twitter also confirm that the device will not feature a Touch Bar, which is in line with rumors that we've heard. The casing design may also feature more rounded corners.

REvil has threatened to release additional documents stolen from Quanta Computer if Apple does not pay a ransom fee by May 1. REvil plans to release new files every day until Apple pays the fee, and Apple has not commented on the situation.

Quanta Computer said that it has indeed been subject to "cyber attacks on a small number of Quanta servers" but that there's "no material impact on the company's business operation.

Glad to see MR not sharing the schematics like others are. That seems wrong and unethical. I mean I’m thrilled to know the info but just seems wrong.

This is just speculation but: One reason why they might add MagSafe again is because USB-C charging only supports up to 100W. Maybe the M1X requires more wattage to run at full power and therefore needs a different charging port. Which could therefore indicate a massive performance jump...
Hahaha no way any Apple mobile chip is taking even 80W.

Ha some are working extremely hard here attacking everyone's post who is against this illegal act of extortion. It's pretty easy to see who truly hates Apple here. Had this been Microsoft or Samsung that hard-working person attacking posts here would be supporting MS and Sammy against the extortionist. 😉

I absolutely DO NOT WANT to return to proprietary chargers and connectors.
I don’t see MagSafe coming back tho. Like if usb c ports can be used to charge still then why change it just to not get tripped over by mistake? Maybe a MagSafe to usb c cable as an option?
MagSafe will charge faster.

More ports competes with other computers with more ports, Apple abusing its monopoly on the PC market again!!
Abuse is creating a better standard that, likely, will be compatible with both MacBooks, iPhones and iPads? K...

On a different note I do not want to see MagSafe return on the MacBook unless it's done right and make sense.
How could it not make sense?

I don't see the point in going back now that we've had no ports for 5 years.
Because being portable devices, it's more convenient to have widely adopted I/O already integrated.

Discussion on data and legality aside, I’m happy the MacBook Pro is getting TB ports on both side but it’s a shame the MagSafe is only on one side of it.
See the schematics for yourself online. Not sure what MR's is on about, but on the birds-eye diagram the fixtures clearly show identical ports on either side of the chassis, parallel to each other.

Only one image has shown the chassis from an isometric perspective on one side, confirming the I/O for that side. The rest of the I/O is confirmed only by text data - not images.

Not if it costs a USB4 port; It makes more sense for a magsafe that's USB-C compatible so Macbook Pro users keep 4 USB4/Thunderbolt 4 ports + HDMI 2.1 port + SD/CFExpress card reader.

That was my initial reaction, but then I realized that every time I've needed four USB-C ports, at least one of them was used for HDMI + power (and, typically, two).

+1. That was my main complaint with MagSafe: the cords wore out many years before the bricks did.

it’s not the leaks that’s the problem. It’s the alleged attempt at extortion. ‘Pay us, or we’ll leak some more’ is criminal, and Mac Rumors shouldn’t have given it space.

But seeing as they did :)...

- Return of Magsafe is great.
- No Touch Bar is good.
- SD card reader is good.
- HDMI port. Not keen on that clunky old thing. At least it’s not SCART!
- USB-C. Let’s hope they are better quality than on the 2016 MBP and don’t wear out so quickly.

It's not correct to understand it this way and make it "ok" to breach an NDA "just because it's not a law or crime".

NDAs are legally enforceable contracts that could get one sued for damages (like the former employee of Apple just weeks ago) by the opposite party.
Stop making up stuff I didn't say, it won't change the simple fact: breaking an NDA is not a crime.

TBH magsafe is a step backwards from USB-C. For me at least I plug in a single cable at my desk and have my monitor, mouse, and keyboard connected along with power. That plus the now near 10 hour battery life on the M1 means I rarely ever have a cable dragged across anywhere someone would trip on it. Maybe the M1X will be a bit more power hungry, but I don't see the 16" MBP being released with under 8 hours of battery life.

HDMI is nice to have in an emergency...but after 4 years of dongles I think most people have some kind of usb-c to whatever display they need. So overall kind of a downgrade in many regards.

Also if they are adding magsafe this year, .they should have added it to the $2400 iPad Pro...that device is way more likely to be yanked away from it's charger since there is no reason to dock it to an external display.

Adding, removing, adding, removing... From time perspective: touchbar shortcuts increase office work efficiency or just simple things like volume up/down or youtube rewind. MagSafe was a nice feature but without integrating it with Thunderbolt (USB-C) port it does not make any sense now. HDMI - useful but people buy Macs to do not have tons of cables so using Thunderbolt 4 is much better solution (one power and signal cable is great idea especially taking into considerations that M1 Macs draw less power (current) from power adapter). SD card slot - useful so good decision for photographers however nowdays most of consumers use smartphones to take a pictures. Strange chaotic decisions. Compare it with new iMac where Apple integrated Ethernet cable in power cable to have just one socket and clean design. Disonance. Why they want to drop Touchbar and add ports? Because they save money on OLED panel (T1 chip is now integrated in M1 am I right?) and use part of this budget on Magsafe, HDMI port and SD card slot and ... maybe they increase profit about few dollars. If Apple wants to be consequent there should be USB-A port (ideally two) for mouse / keyboard (printer). Also they should replace Lightning to USB-C and add mini jack back.

I’m with team don’t post it. Especially when we already know the ports info. You don’t have to credit them by telling us where you got the confirmatio. Just do the usual “sources” confirm. We can guess it ourselves.
