So, YouTube can play flv files.. so, can’t we just convert the YouTube movies to flv ? Is there a way to convert them from the original format(assume MP4) to flv ? Funny, I tried running YouTube back in 2002 abs it wasn’t so great on a G4 sawtooth 350 - my original Mac - what is sad is not too long ago, one could browse the web nicely on OS 9.. had I had known this at the time when I got my G4 Pismo back in 2011, I would be a happy camper.

You misunderstand - Youtube back then used flash video (flv) which was a format playable on OS9 - now youtube uses h264 and webm video - neither can be played on OS9, they can be converted but that solution has been around for a long time.

There was never a Sawtooth G4/350 (G4/AGP board, G4 chip, G4 case).

There was a Yikes! G4/350 (G3/PCI board, G4 chip, G4 case).

Ok.. sorry my mistake. I thought flv was something else.. of course flash was horrible then and still is. I guess if I went to way back machine to a time when YouTube was running a flv, then I would see abs understand. What tool in OS 9 could I use to convert a video, so QT 6 can run it ?

You can't - OS9 doesn't understand h264 or webm - it has to happen on another platform.

In theory an online proxy (similar to Opera) could transcode Youtube in real time for old platforms like OS9 but unless they can be convinced of the commercial value it will never happen.

Action Retro's efforts might get noticed by someone though who can make a subscription based service financially viable.

Drone catcher, so from 2010-2014 OS 9 was actually much better at browsing internet, watching YouTube ? Amazing after 2014, it all went down hill. I have the source code to Netscape along with CodeWarrior - I need to read up on how to rebuild and add the right rendering engine to this, so it can be used to browse most websites. The G4 and to Lesser extent, the G3 have enough power to browse the modern web minus embedded video and ads.

It will take you several years to do this, if it is even achievable at all.

Even though YouTube was always horrible under OS 9, when and what year did OS 9 suddenly become unusable with the web ? Was it in 2014 ?

So, what are his chances of success with this ? Lets look at the positive - if he does succeed, then what will that mean for OS 9 and transcoding youtube to work via an online proxy ?

Youtube was available to OS9 till around 2015 using their flv files.
That was less than 5 years ago !!!! Greedy sob's ! So, all this time... since 2008, 2010 when i got my G4 Pismo which uses OS 9, I could have watched youtube with no issues on it using either IE 5.1.7, Opera, iCab, Netscape to watch youtube with no issues. WHAT A DAMN SHAME and I allowed this to happen !!! I didn't know. Can I go back to 2010 ?

I know I am going to regret this, but maybe we should all just focus on what our aging PowerPC machines can do, rather than what they can't. Action Retro's 68k.news and Frogfind.com are excellent examples of what someone with a positive attitude and a little bit of technical know how and a whole bunch of creativity can do. He's single-handedly made thousands of old macs and PC's somewhat usable on the web, overnight. Cameron Kaiser is yet another example. Dronecatcher's relentless pursuit of what can we still do with a G3 processor is another.

The arrow of time flows in one direction due to the second law of thermodynamics. Entropy in our Universe is always increasing, and the only way to do something about that is to put energy into a system, and resist that natural tendency of things to decay. If you locked up your house and came back in 40 years it would not be cleaner or in better shape than when you left it. Software and computers are no exception, because they, like us, live in this Universe, not some imaginary one where the laws of physics don't apply.

No reason to regret this, it's the right attitude. Focus on what can be done and more productive on them.

Money isn’t the issue - time is.. I have CodeWarrior, but need to pinpoint how to inject TLS 1.2 into Classila - really with 9.3.4b he should have holds yes it with TLS 1.2 and nothing else - that way 90 percent of internet would work.

You'd need to add this code to the right places with 9.3.3 or 9.3.4b source code, but you probably do not know how to do it, neither do I. And I don't know for sure if Roytam1 did use this to add TLS 1.2, I think he proposed, but he never really built it or used it, because he does not have any PPC toolchains.

Roytam1's work is more focused on his browsers for Windows XP and his sister project, Retrozilla for Windows 9x. Retrozilla, despite of the name, holds no affiliation with Classilla and is more related to the fact that it is a mozilla based browser than a cousin of Classilla.

I wonder if Windows NT 4.0 would allow retrozilla to work ? Before PowerPC in 2000, I used to run a Windows NT Server and work station.. internet explorer was the browser at that time.

Hmm.. perhaps I can try to contact him abs maybe he might be able to assist with this.. it’s sad that Win9x and NT 4.0/2000 can browse the internet with TLS 1.2, while we who still want to use OS 9 can’t. I really like OS 9 as it’s much easier to use than OS X, though my experience with Leopard is on par with 9. Don’t know much about 8.6, 8.5.1, 8, or 7, as I never owned a Mac before 2000.

Retrozilla works on Windows NT. But web page rendering is not any better on all browsers available for Win 9x and NT up to XP. For XP there is SeaMonkey 2.49 or 2.45 which was my choice until 2019. I haven't tried again since then.

I wouldn't waste my time. Roytam1 will not help you. As I said, he does not have PPC toolchains, does not work with Macs, and AFAIK he does not have any familiarity with PPC toolchains either.

Damn ! Well, believe it or not, Adobe ended flash to my surprise.. flash never played well on anything PowerPC or anything ever, so I imagine YouTube back in 2002-2004 up till 2015, YouTube played horribly on anything using OS 9.

So, what is next for OS 9 ?
