What is the point of the preorder?

I got the email saying it is reserved at the store but at the bottom of the email it says it is not guaranteed and sold on a first served first come basis. Sounds like you will still have to get there at 3 am and wait in line forever lol.

Also do you have to sign a contract or can you pay $699

?? Sold out??

If i get an error message does that mean the store I've selected is sold out or is something wrong with my apple store app?

yup, got my reservation in via the app.

waiting on a confirmation email

*edit* confirmation recieved

was able to reserve one using the app. Shows up as $599 like everyone else.

I was only able to reserve 1 though, and both my wife and I want to upgrade.

i wonder if we are going to have issues getting the 2nd one once I am in the store. the pickup time is 7am.

i am going to get my wife to download the apple app now and see if she can reserve hers now as well.

My guess is that Apple has given up trying to check upgrade status for reservations because AT&T can't handle it, which is why confirmations are coming through showing full price. Either I'm eligible for the discount (which I believe I am), and will get the discounted price when I purchase the phone in-store, or I'm not in which case I won't buy it.

i was able to book 1 with no problems at all. Now when i try to book a second reservation for my wife it says "Could not create your reservation at this time, please try again later."

Also, the confirmation email reserved price is wrong, says its $599?! http://dl.dropbox.com/u/424034/Capture3.PNG

Me too. Have your wife download the app on her phone. If it is a family plan, have her use her phone number and social. My wife just did it succesfully.

I got a confirmation e-mail about 2 minutes later, but it shows the price as $699. I am pretty sure that is because they are bypassing AT&T's eligibility server.

My thoughts exactly. Mine is the same way but I'm sure they'll fix it when you go to buy the phone

I made a reservation for a 16gb iPhone 4 to be picked up on the 24th and the confirmation email said it will cost $599. I just called Apple and they said that is normal, the discount will be applied when you show up to pick up the phone.

Just wanted to share in case anyone else found this alarming.

for those saying just because you reserved a spot on the 24th doesn't mean you'll get them, i think you are all wrong. considering it says they will hold your reservation until the end of the day.

Thanks. This was the conventional wisdom, but it's nice to hear it confirmed by an official source.

first couple times i tried, the app crashed just as it was "checking eligibility" but 4th/5th (lost count) times the charm apparently! tried about 40 times on apple's website, just happy to have mine reserved!

Na the amount will be corrected at the time of sale or better yet look at your bank statement. The charge when going through should only b XX amount. Im not to worried mine went through and shows to pick up on the 24th...After choosing the store and phone it asked for my password and assuming this is charging my account like when buying an app

was able like every one else to pre order, called a local store about the price and was told they can change that pick up day. then he was like we have been trying all day to get people pre ordered how did you do it. told him about here, now all the iphones and pads in the store have apple store on them.

Tombomb

This was how I was finally able to reserve mine. Holy geez, that's a relief! I'd tried using the app 4-5 times before with no success; it always crashed during the "validating" portion. This last time, it went through without a hitch.

Why is everyone but me able to get through?

Nevermind. It went through the first time lol. I just got the email. Yeah! Now I'm just wondering if I actually ought to try and pre-order tomorrow. I know they hold the reserved phone for 24 hours but I'm still a little worried they won't have it on launch day.

Me too but I'm not going to cancel unless/until I have a $299 reserved for Thursday. I guess the lines will be slow and full of people with the same problem. :(

This worked for me too. One 32GB black phone reserved! My email says $699 too but I'm betting it's a function of not being able to check my eligibility. Can't wait for next Thursday!

Excellent. She's in the process of doing it now. we are on a family plan and she's an authorized user.

Not semantics at all. Pre-order means you are CHARGED and it can be picked up or shipped. Reservation means that you have the right to wait in line on launch day.

ash =o)

So if you don't reserve does that mean you can't wait in line? I reserved one but does it give you any advantage over those who don't?

I'm a bit freaking out cause I forgot to check to see what price it gave me before I said sure, pre-order one. I know I'm eligible for an upgrade (even without AT&T moving up upgrade dates or any special concessions I'm eligible, it's been 18 months for me). But I'm not an authorized user (yet, gives me time to work on that cause from what I understand, it's a pretty quick process from home) so I don't know fi that would affect how Apple sees my upgrade eligability.
