Maybe now we can get a region free firmware for the notoriously hard to patch Matshita aka Panasonic drivers in most of our MacBooks/MacBook Pros.

I was a little nervous as it installed right off of the Updater. The shutdown was exceedingly slow. It seems to be functioning correctly. Don't know if it will make a diff as I haven't found an unplayable CD/DVD yet.

I was thinking the same thing but I'm not holding my breath. ;)

it says my 15" macbook pro C2D Rev 2 already has this firmware,
burried as inacurate.....wait a min.....doh!

This just goes to show how psycho these Mac sites are over the iPhone. It wasn't even necessary to mention it in the article.

well i have a fully qualified machine for this update, i need the update as i've had issues with writing to media at higher speeds, and it refuses to update the drive.

called apple care and it was like talking to a brick wall. the woman just kept telling me to try a different brand of media. She refused to actually escalate the fact that this update will not installed on a supported machine.

anyone else with a C2D MBP 2.33 GHz successfully installed this update? Here is the information on my SuperDrive

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D:
Firmware Revision: KCVB

only for the laptops? what about iMac? doesn't it use the same superdrive as the MBPro? i wouldn't mind having an update for my iMac C2D, the DVDs i have only work on 2x burning speed...

FINALLY!

I have had problems importing some music CD's for ages on my Macbook Core Duo (went through 3 superdrives) that I purchased last May. It has taken Apple a year to update the firmware.

Hopefully this does the trick.

Downloaded and installed (by itself) fine, now it's waiting for me to restart the system, which I don't plan to do any time soon.. I don't like all the negative things people report here :(

This better fix my CD burning woes...

stupid Media code error in Roxio is giving me headaches. I have to dig for a random cd in my spindle for it to work.

it bricked my drive.

I wanted to restart my computer, and since I don't do this often (yay macs!) I ran software update. Software update finished and quit, so I then pressed restart.

As my computer was in the shutdown process, the superdrive updater app launched and started without user intervention. It installed 66% of the update, before my system killed the process in the shutdown.

Now my superdrive refuses to take any cds/dvds, and system info shows that it's there, but has no serial number. The updater app says there is no drive to update.

yay. what a day.

unlucky. You are supposed to let the installer run and then press restart when it says it has flashed the firmware and not before! I guess a trip to an Apple Store is required now?

Mine installed with no problems on my MB, firmware updated from HBE4 to HBEA

This is good.

My friend has had problems burning CD and DVD media. Apple looked at it, and sent it back saying, 'it must have been a bad batch', but I think otherwise after this update.

Rich.

Last week I was unable to import a particular audio CD into iTunes. The drive would spin and stop, spin and stop, and then eject the disk. I installed this firmware update and am now importing that CD. So the update does something.

Rebooted and it is ripping fine.

Those of you who can install the update, follow these instructions:

1) Download the update via software update.
2) When Software Update says it it is done, close it.
3) WAIT, DO NOT RESTART!!!
4) The firmware update should automatically start and do its thing. Do not shut off your computer.
5) When it gives you the restart button, you can restart.

Update Successful

I have a macbook pro core 2 duo and it needed the update for whatever reason. It seems to be functioning normally without flaw. Although I can't say I had any problems before with the exception of one scratched DVD which I suspect still won't play.

At any rate, I just wanted to say that I did notice the little buzz noise that the machine makes when awakening from sleep or when the superdrive is expecting to burn something is shorter in duration. Maybe its just me, but it certainly seems that way. I probably have much better things to be doing right now then focusing on this little nuance, but nevertheless, this is what I noticed and felt compelled for some reason to contribute.

oh and when you actually update your firmware, the drive makes does its initializing sounds (like on boot up), so dont be startled.

Woo hoo!!

Awesome!

I'm pretty sure that the startup sound of the drive (that annoying vvvvt! vvvvt! it makes when it wakes from sleep) is now faster and quieter!

Sweet! That was really annoying.
