Hmmm, strange update. After running software update and downloading the 12 Mb software pack it told me to go to Utility's and check the downloaded SuperDrive Update 2.1. So I did and opened this file, this is the real update I guess, after running it it said Restart so i clicked OK, then it said restart was interrupted and I had to restart myself. Is there any way to check if the update is installed properly? In system profiler i can't see the firmware version.

Btw my drive is still noisy after waking from sleep or restarting

to check its installed, go :apple: - about this mac - more info - disc burning
you should see the firmware version there.

i didn't think there were any region unlock hacks for superdrives yet???

System profiler says: Firmware Revision: KCVB
I don't know what that means

I applied the patch for my MacBook's C2D SuperDrive (model HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MB) found on this site:

http://tdb.rpc1.org/

It works great on my drive. No problems whatsoever. It's listed as a "beta" patch though, with "HIGHER RISK" of damaging drives when applied. Try at your own risk.

I've only been a part of the Mac group for a couple of weeks now, having just bought my first one.

I've got the 13", 2.16 _Core 2 Duo blackbook. I read of the update in a couple of different e-mails, and checked several places, including here, and it seems that just this one is not included in the update. I did force it to check for a software update last night, and nothing new showed up

Since I'm new to Macs, I'm smart enough not to get too far off the trail, or tinker too deeply until/unless I *know* exactly what I'm doing and why. I'm 'allergic' to bricks and/or doorstops. From what I've been able to find, I came to the conclusion that I don't have to worry 'bout this one..

I'm really enjoying the new Mac. I'll probably get sucked into a 'tech refresh' on the desktop when the iMac gets updated as well. Hopefully, it's mostly Mac and selected Linux from here on out..

I think it was a rather poor decision on Apple's part to have the update automatically run after download. Software Update states quite clearly that the update will be saved to the hard drive and that you will need to run it, but once the download is complete the update automatically starts to install, and you're left with a screen telling you that you better not turn the system off or else your drive will be rendered inoperable.

This was the scariest update experience of my life!

I was nervous for sure when I saw the warning, but all went smoothely on a c2d blackbook...
My drive seems slightly quieter on awake, but it still makes the vvt vvvvvt sound....

My superdrive got bricked by the update too

I had the exact same thing happen. Anybody have any advice?

Thanks.

it bricked my drive.

I wanted to restart my computer, and since I don't do this often (yay macs!) I ran software update. Software update finished and quit, so I then pressed restart.

As my computer was in the shutdown process, the superdrive updater app launched and started without user intervention. It installed 66% of the update, before my system killed the process in the shutdown.

Now my superdrive refuses to take any cds/dvds, and system info shows that it's there, but has no serial number. The updater app says there is no drive to update.

yay. what a day.

:apple: -> About This Mac -> More Info... -> Hardware -> Disc Burning

This is what I get on my MB CD

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857:

Firmware Revision: HBEA
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: No

The updater ran on it's own. I've done the restart. Drive read a DivX DVD fine, so I guess things are OK.

I wonder what the Firmware version was before the update.

My updated and it ruined my superdrive!

my did the update and it shoes fw be39 but it won't read any cd!

Worked for me

I have the same Firware now too.

I am in the middle of redoing all my music in to Apple Lossless, about 1 in 25 CDs have had a problem ripping (with or without error correction) on the odd song, requiring a Force Quit of iTunes. Since the update those problem CDs have been fine. Seems quicker and quieter too (subjective).

Mine now shows HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA with AE39 firmware. Don't know what it updated, but the start-up sound seems quicker. Like someone previously mentioned, its gone from VVVTTT VTTTT!! to vvt vvtt :D My mac seemed to take forever to startup after the update though, I thought it had trashed something. Man, that was uber scary :S

I still haven't updated my firmware. My drive is HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA with Firmware Revision: AE38. I've got a region free hack and I'm afraid that the region change counter may screw up if I update to AE39.

If you've noticed that the drive access noise is shorter, is it higher pitched?

It looks like it updated, but every time I start my computer, "SuperDrive Update 2.1" runs and tells me, "No devices were found that require this firmware update." Is it safe for me to just delete it from my utilities folder at this time or am I asking for major trouble doing that? Thanks for any help.

The updater has done it's job so it is safe to delete it.

My drive stopped working after installing the update too. I started it before my lunch break and restarted my system afterwards, but the installer had finished running, so I dont know what went wrong. Now my device info is all weird.

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D:

Firmware Revision: 0032

WTF???

Matshita DVD-R UJ-857
Firmware revision: HBEA (don't know what it was before)

It worked fine for me, just followed the instructions with the installer. I now can read audio cds without them being spit out after trying to read them for a couple of seconds.
