I have a core duo macbook pro, and it says I don't need this update.

My moms laptop said the same thing.
It downloaded the update, ran the utility in applications/utilities and even got to 100% installed, when the dialog box came up to restart, I clicked on it and it said she didn't need the update.

I manually restarted to be sure.

specs:

Total Number Of Cores: 2

Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz

I have a 2.33Ghz 15" MBP and I don't get this firmware update either. I guess it all depends on the build of your MBP whether you need it or not.

perhaps the computers with matsushita drives need firmware updates.

LG drives in some random models do not need it. (not all superdrives are the same, even in a specific model).

Not for Mac Mini

I realize that most everyone knows this since it's pretty clear it is only for the Intel laptops but I did see if it would install on my Intel Mac Mini and was told it wasn't needed for my computer. Figured as much but thought I'd try just to see if it would even install or not. And the answer is - not. :)

Damn. That sucks. I love Firmware updates. I have no idea why. :)

YOu shouldn't. Firmware updates should scare anyone who has even a basically understanding of what happens if it goes wrong. Granted things have changed substantially since the days of updating via serial connection\floppy disk\FTP. I still update our HP Laserjets with new firmwares from time to time via FTP and it scares the crap out of me.

Superdrive

So this update means that iPhone will have some sort of burning CD and DVD´s capability?

:D Sorry, but with all this iPhone news this last few days... well you get the idea.

On another note... I just got my first Intel Mac today and boy are they fast!

Seems to have worked for me (C2D, 2.33GHz, MATSHITA UJ-857D).. updated my firmware from KCV9 to KCVB...

BTW, I had parallels open when I first ran the updater... didn't see the drive then; worked fine after I quit though.

The update seems to contain the following firmwares:

BE39
AE39
GHGBA
GHAEA
GKCVB
GKBVB

After more testing, I can confirm that now on my Core 2 Duo BlackBook, every time I wake from sleep, the drive no longer goes VVVT! VVVVT! Now it just goes vvt-vt.

:D

at last!

my superdrive has had awful problems importing and burning cds.

fingers crossed this fixes it...

I've noticed as of late many problems, where my SD won't play DVD's. None with apparent scratches/fingerprint. It was annoying; many times I need to reboot and even then the problem sometimes persisted.

Hopefully this will solve it.

Great! My drive read discs that couldn't read before

I had a data CD just today that wouldn't read properly. It didn't really seem to have any damage, and read fine in other drives.

After the update, it reads correctly. What a coincidence that the update comes out the same day I need it.

The firmware updater does start in the middle of the shutdown process, or seems to. I did a restart, and it finally appeared. It didn't get killed by the shutdown process though, so my drive obviously didn't brick.

I've never had an Apple factory installed optical drive work flawlessly, but I've barely tested my Macbook drive but no complaints so far. This isn't appearing in the system update.

Yes!

It fixed my Superdrive sounding like a jet engine with some disks for no reason!

No update for me??? :'(

I have a 17" 2.16 CD with a SD that barely works, it can read most factory made cds not burned blanks and dvds ok. trying to burn anything but dvd-rws gives me media errors even wen set to 1x

HELLPPP

thanks

Am I right in assuming that installing this update will remove any region free firmware hacks I have?

Most likely

Speaking of which, after the update my SuperDrive is now really quiet. Even when waking up from sleep
