My thought exactly--no new resolution to deal with at all, just the original iPad resolution.

I want one.... :)

Putting the iPad resolution on an iPhone would be worse than a new resolution. Everything designed to fit an iPad screen is a different size to what an iPhone would want at the same resolution, so there is no gain, but creates problems.

I sometimes use screen resolution to detect device type (no work needed when a new generation of a device comes out with an existing resolution, which most do), that would be messed up by using the same res at a different physical size.

I would rather see the same aspect ratio, perhaps at something like 1080 x 720. Existing apps could run at their original resolution within that, just leaving a border on the screen.

I don't know what the math would be, but maybe that's why 3.8" rumors have been around.
This article did the math for 4", saying it would lead to a drop to 285 pixels per inch from the current 326 pixels per inch. There is no way they are changing the resolution and creating some sort of "fragmentation (using this word loosely)" with apps.
3.8" might up the pixels per inch to around 300ish, and is a nice balance between keeping it "retina" and not messing with developers.

I read or saw somewhere (can't remember where) that this next iPhone was SJ's "special project". And he devoted the entire last year of his life working on it. Even working on it the day before he passed. It was said that the next iPhone was going to be the biggest ever and the "wow" factor was going to be akin the original announcement of the 1st iPhone. I can't for the life of me remember where I read or saw it. It may have been on some TV show shortly after his death. I take all these rumors with a grain of salt but I'd like to think this was somewhat true. It was a great report.

4" with 285ppi really? that sucks

Toshiba just made a 4" 720x1280 with 367ppi, this is what I want on my phone :)

I'll take one of these to go please, Apple.

Sounds great - I'm getting bored of my 3GS (although it's as great, well better, as the day I bought it - almost 3 years ago!), its nice to trade up every now and then.

I wonder if they'll design something that doesn't require a case. I saw a post on twitter from someone who got to meet Jony Ive and said Ive hates iPhone cases with a passion. Yes most cases out there are quite ugly but there's no way I'd go naked.

The iPhone 4 was the first phone I used a case with. I used my free bumper for more comfort and to protect the exposed glass. It also had the added advantage of bulking up the device so that is snuggly fitted my iPhone 3G holster case (which I don't count as a case in the same way as the device is not in it when in use, only for transporting). Not that I wanted the added bulk at any other time.

Wasn't there a rumor recently that these displays were possibly made for the next iPhone?

No redesign no buying, also for me.

There will be a redesign, definitely.

The 4" sleek design is actually the next gen iPod Touch.

Current iPod touch design + bigger screen = iPhone 5 = Dream!

I hope for a major update. These Samsung-devices look really great at the moment. I was very close to switching to Samsung Galaxy but I believe it will be worth to wait.

What do you mean? The iPhone doesn't require a case! I have used iPhones continuously since the original release in 2007 and have NEVER had a case. Also never had any damage. I don't know why so many people insist on covering a beautiful, elegant design with an ugly case. The aluminum and glass surfaces are a pure joy to touch. With a case, the phone may as well be made out of burlap and plastic - you can't feel it anyway.

Also, how many people clamoring for a "thinner" iPhone currently use an iPhone with a case? That seems non-intuitive. If you want a thinner iPhone, just take off the stupid case!

This probably wouldn't happen but in theory they could make the new resolution twice the iPhone's current resolution so 1920 x 1280. At that resolution they could change the screen size all they want in the future and it would still be retina and they wouldn't need app changes (except for the first time bump from 960 to 1920). It could even be considered retina for a 7 inch tablet if they decide to do that. The A5x could obviously handle the resolution but I think it would need to be die shrunk to lower the power consumption for the iPhone.

Yeah, because we need more pixels than viewable by the naked eye :roll eyes:.

I can see a slight jump, as stated in a previous post, to 3.7 or 3.8". You need only hold the phone another 5" from your face to equal the current ppi ;).

Aluminum back, not happening. The glass is to allow better signal transmission. That is why the 3G enabled iPad's are stuck with the ugly black panel. I like the glass. My iP4 has always been naked and I don't have a scratch on it. Let's see the antennae band made of liquid metal* that goes clear to the edge so when you drop it, it bounces.

*Does this stuff conduct?

The new iPhone will be a redesign as many people probably feel a little let down from the 4 to the 4s. I know loads of friends that never upgraded and I only did because my 4 was damaged. Apple will be mad if they leave the form factor the same

Why do people still assume the 6th generation iPhone is the iPhone 5? The 4S is the 5th iPhone.

Why shouldn't they?

You are arguing that because the model name obviously does not correspond to the generation counter, the next generation is unlikely to be called iPhone 5?

Apple will probably go all "the new iPhone" on us, so you can have your precious iPhone (6G). If not, big deal.

You might think you know "loads" of people who held off...

considering the 4S is the best and fastest selling iPhone of all time, I don't think apple is hurting because they kept the same form factor.

If it's redesigned like the picture, I'm not buying. I really don't need a larger screen, but what I don't like is the shape. I really prefer the flat back to a tapered back. My iPhone 4S will easily stand on any of it's sides, and I stand it up all the time. It also stays put better when it's lying down.

Also I think the aluminim back is a lot uglier than the glass. This looks like a step back.
You mad? :D
Should have waited for the "real" iPhone upgrade.

Justifying that a phone can stand on it's side as a feature is reaching.
