I read or saw somewhere (can't remember where) that this next iPhone was SJ's "special project". And he devoted the entire last year of his life working on it. Even working on it the day before he passed. It was said that the next iPhone was going to be the biggest ever and the "wow" factor was going to be akin the original announcement of the 1st iPhone. I can't for the life of me remember where I read or saw it. It may have been on some TV show shortly after his death. I take all these rumors with a grain of salt but I'd like to think this was somewhat true. It was a great report.

It was an analyst that claims research turned up the Jobs + iPhone 5 rumor:

Might be true though:

I like the current look and size - possible a little larger - but not much. I like this sized because it fits nicely in pocket and nice in the hand.

I can't believe those that like phones that are almost tablets - so horrible - do they need to be that big for ego. A phone is a phone, it better to get tablet for doing real stuff - even better a computer.

It's a phone! who the heck is a power user on a phone? larger screens do not increase productivity or make the user a power user (whatever that even means).

I hate when people say "It's a phone"! It's not a phone - it's a portable media device that you can make calls with. I use it as a phone about 1% of the time, if that. If you are using it primaily as a phone, then you should get something cheaper. Larger screen certainly can increase productivity (um, worksheets, etc) but mostly will increase enjoyment from having a larger viewing area for videos and games and the like.

Gruber is not going to be happy about the increased screen size, I guess :p

That aside it would be a great improvement to have 4+ screen on an iPhone - I've a iPod Touch and it feels teensy and almost uncomfortable to read compared to the competition.

What do you mean? The iPhone doesn't require a case! I have used iPhones continuously since the original release in 2007 and have NEVER had a case. Also never had any damage. I don't know why so many people insist on covering a beautiful, elegant design with an ugly case. The aluminum and glass surfaces are a pure joy to touch. With a case, the phone may as well be made out of burlap and plastic - you can't feel it anyway.

Also, how many people clamoring for a "thinner" iPhone currently use an iPhone with a case? That seems non-intuitive. If you want a thinner iPhone, just take off the stupid case!
When I bought my 4S the first thing the guy at the Apple store said is 'get a case, don't go naked'. I asked for the least offensive case possible. I go a nice one that adds hardly any thickness or weight and is somewhat translucent so I can see the logo and wording on gh back. But most people I know cover theirs up with these bulky ugly colored things.

I think the current iPhone is a work of art. Hard to improve upon this design unless they just made it thinner once they make it slightly larger. I fear we might be headed for another God-awful turtle shell backing like the 3G & 3GS.

I don't understand all the people who think a case design is a make-or-break for the phone.

Very excited about these new rumors. Both my wife and myself are ready to upgrade our iPhones but am waiting for the latest and greatest. A thinner, sleek iPhone with a 4" display would be fantastic. My wife is upgrading from a iPhone 3G and I have an iPhone 4. She really needs the upgrade badly. I just tried to install the Kindle app on her 3G and it wouldn't even install. What I want is more speed and a better camera.

Aluminum back, not happening. The glass is to allow better signal transmission. That is why the 3G enabled iPad's are stuck with the ugly black panel.

Aren’t all the antennas for the 4/4S external? I don’t think the glass back has anything to do with reception considerations[?]

At any rate, I don’t think Apple will use the same resolution on a larger display. The marketing message will just be too muddy, bigger physical display size needs to be “bigger” (higher) resolution.

The problem is, repurposing something like 1024x768 is the wrong aspect ratio (unless they change that too) and it would likely still necessitate redesign of the UI (since packing down layout and UI resources into 4” would be crowded).

Maybe there’s a common resolution they could use to keep the retina PPI on a ~4” phone product, that would also scale up to a nice tablet size in the ~7” range (and be more of mid-range product).

How about 1920x1280[?] That’s @4X the original iPhone resolution (and 1.5 A/R, plus easy resource scaling), would be outstanding at 4-4.5”, could be handled by the A5X (at less power consumption vs. the new iPad), and in a “phablet” at 7”, still have outstanding PPI.

i won't believe anything until i see leaked hardware parts or just "Actual parts"

Apple needs to start to EOL old Iphones because fragmentation.

Today we have 4 different screen resolutions + 1 SoC without SIMD. An educated guess is that everything believe A4 SoC and Iphone Retina will be EOL with iOS 6.

Iphone have today 3:2 screen format. Most Androids have 16:9. Wonder if Apple will continue to use 3:2 or switch to 16:9?

There are so many "morons" that believe that Ipad is bad because it uses 4:3 instead of 16:9. Apple have also moved its computer line from 16:10 to 16:9 because 16:9 panels are much cheaper. That is why I am worried that Iphone switches from 3:2 to 16:9.

If I can make phone calls on the 5 without it dropping like my 4, I would call this new device truly revolutionary.

I've never, ever had a dropped call using my Verizon iPhone 4. You must either live out in the middle of nowhere, in the mountains, among big buildings, or in a tunnel.

iphone XL

I'd like to see 2 new iphones:
the new iphone
and the new iphone XL
i'm not sure if a 4" screen (!) is nessesary..
i like the 3.5" display. fine for me, everthing i want to read is readable, and reachable when holding the iphone in the palm of your hand.
like many of you say or think: i don't want an ipad in my pocket.

we'll see what happpens..
next thing: macbooks, imacs, mac pro! (i hope soon!!)

cheers
floling

4" sounds perfect to me. The larger Android devices (4.3" or bigger) are great to look at but are actually awkward for one-hand use for me (even during just calls). 4" is a nice compromise.

Yeah, because we need more pixels than viewable by the naked eye :roll eyes:.

I can see a slight jump, as stated in a previous post, to 3.7 or 3.8". You need only hold the phone another 5" from your face to equal the current ppi ;).

Aluminum back, not happening. The glass is to allow better signal transmission. That is why the 3G enabled iPad's are stuck with the ugly black panel. I like the glass. My iP4 has always been naked and I don't have a scratch on it. Let's see the antennae band made of liquid metal* that goes clear to the edge so when you drop it, it bounces.

*Does this stuff conduct?
These mock ups aren't based on any inside knowledge and most of the time all they're doing is making it look like an iPad or iPod Touch and making the screen bigger by eliminating the bezel. I highly doubt the next iPhone is going to look like a mini iPad. Especially when the iPad design will probably be refreshed in 2013 anyway.

The drop in PPI is perfectly fine for me... the new iPad's resolution is actually about 20 PPI below what a 4" iPhone would be, and reviewers were drooling over that screen.

These "rumors" are so confusing...
I dont see apple changing the "basic" bezel design anytime soon, when they introduced it they went insane about how revolutionary this new antenna design was blah blah blah, if so why change it so fast? (Im not saying they wont change the whole design, im sure they will since they change it every 2 releases, but the basic "metal around the edge" I think will remain in one way or another and so will the back crystal plate.
As for the screen size... The current iphone has the perfect size at the moment. I can put it in my pocket and not feel it pushing against my leg. If you increase the size by decreasing the bezel edges (e.g. very very thin edges) then I am up for it otherwise I'd hate the phone getting bigger. THere are plenty of elephant phones out there why ruin the only great "small" phone? Not to mention of the obvious problem with marketing if they increase the size by keeping the same resolution (bye bye "retina" sticker) or the increased strain in developers if they do actually change the resolution....
As for LTE I doubt they can slim the device while adding LTE. Im sure they will add LTE next version but as far as making the device slimmer?.... They actually made the ipad bigger in part because of the LTE antenna, which is capable of draining abou ~10% of the huge ipad battery.
