Figures. I just ordered one about 1h before this rumor landed :)

Anyway, I don't feel I need facetime, a back-camera, higher resolution or something along those lines. The only thing I'm a bit bummed about it the 256Mb memory in the first-gen version, and a snappier processor wouldn't hurt of course. Ah well, better getting the current iPad now than waiting another 6 months (or probably more, seeing I live in Europe). I could probably sell it if I ever want to upgrade.

Wait until it arrives, you'll soon learn that it runs just fine with the provided processor and ram. It doesn't need more.

So people have to buy new? It's a rather obvious tactic by Apple.

I couldn't disagree more! Had the original iPad included a camera, the price point would have been higher. Apple needed to sell the consumer on a tablet, which many said would bomb. You bring out a great device at a good price point and you win over the consumer. You then add features and if the price increases, it's OK because the device has already won over the consumer.

Also, until iOS4 is available on the iPad, a camera really doesn't bring much to the party...now, with iOS4, the camera has a bigger role.

With regard to the comment about "stop making the iPad"....really? I use mine every day, and now with Citrix client, I can access my office. It's a fantastic device and will only get better. I'm looking forward to iOS4 on it...

...enjoy the weekend!

To answer some questions:

Yeah, 4.2 (even this first beta) runs great on the current iPad. The whole 256mb thing is a non-issue.

Should you hold off? Unless you're saving your allowance, or out of work, just buy one. You'll have 6 (almost 7) months of iPad bliss and utility between now and April. Plus, this update will probably be incremental.

The resale market has been pretty strong, so even if you do want to upgrade in 7 or 8 months, you'll probably recoup a few hundred at least by selling your old one. Heck - If the only thing they add is FaceTime, I'll probably hit Craigslist and buy a second 1st gen iPad to save a few bucks.

Retina Display? 2015... Maybe. But by the, everyone will want the flexible roll-up displays anyway. The current screen is awesome, and gives a great mix of graphics speed, app compatibility, and battery life. Besides from a manufacturing and graphics chip standpoint, it's just not gonna happen anytime soon.

I get the feeling we are all thinking:

Camera (deff 1, possibly 2)

512MB Memory

Gyroscope

Perhaps a step up in Storage memory

And that's that.

If we are lucky a CPU and GPU tweak, but I'd not be surprised if we don't get that.

I just bought my iPad and im still happy with the purchase. If the new one comes out within a month or two (verrrry doubtful) then I'll just sell this one if I want the new. Otherwise, if it comes out in March or April, that's still 6 months away!

Not a chance since they didn't increase RAM in the new Touch.

I don't agree. The iPod Touch is following the current iPad in specs. Not setting the standard for the next iPad.

Also, iPad apps are much more complicated and could therefore use more memory.

Nice to see that people have very reasonable expectations for the next gen iPad. To those wanting to have one now, my suggestion is to get it, there is still 6, maybe 7 months of Novelty, and when the new one comes out, your device will still be working perfectly.

The real question: Will those of use who got the 3G iPad and managed to get the no-longer-available-to-new-users unlimited data plan be allowed to transfer our plan to the 2nd gen iPad?

Shouldn't be a problem. Your account is linked to the SIM so just swap it out.
When I had my iPad replaced that's all I had to do. A newer iPad would be the same in theory. Of course Steve could always screw it up if he really hates us.

So it could arrive before Christmas "2010" according to the article?

LOL

The article says parts will start being produced in January. Unless the new iPad can "self assemble" and ship itself back in time, nope - no holiday iPad...

Most likely, we'll see a late March 2011 announcement with a week or so preorder, the general availability in the US. (other countries may vary especially for 3G models that need country/carrier approval.)

Well hopefully if this is "true" then they should be bringing some serious updates to the iWork suite for iPad, cause it needs it IMO.

Anyone think will have another Jan announcement with a April release again?

Nope, no point in basically killing the old product line for several months before the new one comes out.

Frankly I think this makes a lot of sense (and have been saying this for motnhs now). Look at Apple's release schedule on the... let's call it consumer side. June: iPhone, September: iPod, December: Christmas so no point in launching anything, April: iPad. It also make a lot of sense with regards iOS, combine the preview event for developers with the launch of the new iPad - makes for better media coverage and gets around the problem of not being able to show the new iPhone at the same time you give the first glimpse of the new version of the operating system.

Damn it.My head is about to explode.I was close to purchasing a new ipad ,then this.Steve hates me.:(

Eh, I just got one yesterday (traded actually). I'm still happy I did it, even after reading this. "1st Quarter" could mean mid-March, still 6 months away. I already love it and will truly enjoy it for a long time.

Maybe they might double the flash to 128GB. Given that you can use AirPlay to play any media on the iPad via the new Apple TV, and Apple TV now has no storage, then it could make sense to sync more media to the iPad so you can still play it without turning on the computer.

Friggin A!!!!! I can't wait!

Me and my old lady do Face Time on our iphones while she's pulling night shift at seven-11 and it's so hot! She's a pretty big woman, so with the iPad I'll get to see more of her. We get pretty kinky and a couple of times customers seened her. Wow!!!

Thanks Steve!!! Great stuff... you're keepin us fresh.

A camera would be cool but I would simply like to see it shed a little weight and thickness. I love mine to death but when I pick up my 4th Gen iPod touch the Pad looks super chubby, almost clunky. I notice how the screen on the Pad is like an .125" below the actual touch surface and the Pod is right there at your fingers. Little stuff, picky stuff I know. I think the engineers can do a bit better.

iPad....Awful
Please stop making them
As a longtime AAPL stockholder, I heartily disagree.

Apple should consider avenues which increase shareholder value. As a high-margin iDevice with excellent sales and growth opportunity, the iPad handily does so.

It's worth nothing that AAPL's closing price yesterday was its all-time high, just a tad below their all-time intraday high.

Have a nice day.

:) :p :D
