I don't understand people expecting MBP upgrade announcements at WWDC. Okay, the Mac Pro was announced then, but if there's an upgrade to the MBP, won't it be announced in October, as usual?
Also, it was more than 6 months later that the MacPro actually hit the market, so supplies tightening right now on the MBP (to make way for something new) doesn't make sense to me.
The only announcement I would anticipate coming from WWDC would be a 'this is what is coming for the pros' announcement regarding something in the works, which would have no bearing on the present supply chain.

That said, I don't really see technological advancement slowing. Shifting? Sure! But transitional periods will eventually (quickly?) give raise to another exponential growth period.

I suppose at the end of the day I think some advancement will be made in another sector (soonish) that will help keep computational growth going.

Just my 2 cents.

I think most of the technological advancements have been enabled - if not driven - by computational power.

For decades product designers and inventors have had the luxury of knowing more power would be there a couple of years down the road.

This assumption has been with us so long that it's difficult to re-map everything and look at the future in a different way. While a strong need drives one to find a solution, it doesn't assure a specific roadblock will be eliminated.

We seem to be weak on both needs and solutions right now. Perhaps we need to focus more on unique needs outside of the first world - ones that require different kinds of solutions.

The funny part is, like many others here I'd like to see additional computational power in the next 15" MBP. But I can't figure out how I'll use it in any way that is life-changing (even in a small way). I have one application in mind where it could make a significant difference - where it could replace those X99 i7s I built with something more portable. But even there it would only matter to me a little - my customers wouldn't get anything better because of it.

It's sad, but the near stand-still in computational power has lowered both customer expectations and developers' innovation/creativity.

GTX 970M Please!

At least a GTX card for the love of Jobs!
That would be great, but I am afraid the 970M draws too much power for the 15" macbook pro.
the new macbook pro will most likely get 950M or maybe GTX 960M if we are lucky

I really expect Apple to start migrating some iPhone tech to the Macs-

  • ForceTouch
  • TouchID
  • and yes .... SIRI

?? touch ID is already in Macs and not in iPhones

These will include the force touch track pads right?
like 99.99% chance it will have force touch

I reeeeaaaallly hope they bypass Broadwell altogether and push out a Skylake model Q3 this year. I desperately need an upgrade, but I'm waiting on Skylake. I don't want my computer to be crippled when great features are introduced in the years to come.

Skylake or bust.

Let it be Skylake, please~

I really hope they skip Broadwell and go to straight to Skylake.

If they can wait till Q3 or Q4 then we can have all the shinyness skylake can deliver.

Image

No Broadwell update, they will wait for Skylake now and they WILL still use a discrete GPU in the top end 15" MacBook Pro.

I just pray that they stop Ive from ditching all the ports just to make it 'majestically thin and unapologetically lacking in any ports for usability'....

I wish apple could skip broadwell and deliver with new design , force touch , touch id , SKYLAKE , and 4k . :):) am i hoping tooo much ?? :p
can someone tell me what could be the successor of 4980 HQ (used in 2014 macbook pro 15").

I don't understand why all of you people think there is a chance of a skylake 15" macbook pro coming out soon???

That chart of intel roadmap is out of date. Intel's chips are delayed several months like they are every generation. Skylake is not really coming out in 2015.

Only like half the broadwell chips are out so far.

By the end of 2015, we may get CORE M skylake chips but thats it.
Then early 2016 more skylake chips will start trickling in.
And it will not be until Q3/Q4 of 2016 until skylake chips come out suitable for the 15" macbook pro.

At some point later this year we will get a broadwell 15" macbook pro.
And at some point in late 2016 we will get a skylake (and possible redesigned) 15" macbook pro.

I don't know why so many people believe that there will be skylake chips in Q3/Q4 of 2015? If we get any skylake chips at all this year they will be core M only. What will be coming out in Q3/Q4 of 2015 is 47W broadwell chips suitable for the 15" Macbook pro.
Stop hoping a skylake macbook pro will be coming out this year, and stop asking Apple to skip broadwell generation because that makes no sense.

I care more about the graphics than the CPU at this point. I mean for the low, low price $2500, you can get a Mac laptop with an ancient discrete GPU. They really need to update that more often.

Yesssss. I'm more than happy with the CPU performance of the current generation, but GPUs could do with a boost. I'm afraid that Apple will cut the highest end model of the MBP and just stick to Iris Pro graphics.

I'm with you. I don't think it will be delayed quite as long as you predict, but I can't see counting on it to show up in working notebooks for sale this Fall. If Intel releases the chips (Broadwell) they should put it in their notebooks!

I think we'll see an announcement at WWDC, with a "coming in August" caveat.

The delays in both the rMBP's and riMac's do suggest supply chain redistribution. I wouldn't get too excited about any Broadwell rMBP's this summer. Glad to hear my 15" is still cutting edge for awhile longer ;)

Does anyone know how Intel picks names? Is there some kind of easy rule you can apply when you hear two Intel product names and immediately know which one is the newer of the two?

IE, with Android versions they're alphabetical order... Astro -> Bender -> Cupcake -> Donut -> Eclair -> Froyo -> Gingerbread -> Honeycomb -> I... forget -> Jelly Bean -> Key Lime -> Kit Kat.

Same deal with Eclipse... Helios -> Indigo -> Juno -> Kepler -> Mars.

Intel, I know they keep the same prefix for each tick-tock cycle, but is there any rule to know the order is Crystalwell -> Broadwell -> Skylake -> Cannonlake?

I was hoping they could make it considerably thinner & lighter, smaller overall, maybe with a new kind of keyboard that will "take some getting used to" (per just about every reviewer that reviews it), dump all the ports but maybe one (but make it a new port with hardly any third party product support (yet)), force touch, maybe a much weaker processor also in support of thinner & lighter and maybe offer it in colors like the new :apple:Watch.

Hopefully, they could do all that while keeping the pricing about where it is so they can enjoy healthy profit margins while a good chunk of us call it "the future", "just wait 2 or 3 generations" and the old "the MBA started out much like this". Don't worry Apple, we'll just attack anyone that finds any fault with any of the above, spinning anything you want to do- or leave out- better than your own paid marketing team can.

Roll out some accessories to make the one port usable but price those accessories for healthy profits too (and don't count their weight when touting "lighter" at launch).

Lastly, hopefully they could launch it in very, very short supply so that perhaps there's not even any in stores for days after it's supposed to be available.

Sounds ideal to me... even like "the future" ;)

Please, can you stop with the sarcastic comments, every time I see your name pop up, the phrase "Flogging a Dead Horse" springs to mind, maybe the first or second time it raised a chuckle, but after 50 plus times (not exact number BTW) I feel like ripping my own throat out and beating myself with it

It's a joke. There's a community here. We joke sometimes. We poke fun. You know, for laughs.

But dude you ain't funny, try different jokes, a comedian doesn't do the same stand up for 10 years and not refresh his/her material, not that I'm calling you a comedian.

If they update at WWDC force touch will probably be implemented but if they chose to hold off for skylake chips I hope they have a redesign of some sort. I would take a space grey 15 inch mbp in a heartbeat.

Has anybody noticed that there's also been less and less selection of both the rMBP 15s and riMacs in the refurbished store over the last few weeks too?

It would be really nice if they would offer a 15" MacBook (Pro or otherwise) that didn't cost $2k.

It's worse in Canada. The prices were about the same a few months ago, but then they suddenly went up to reflect the falling Canadian dollar. Overnight it went up to $2450 for the base 15".

I should have bought it when it was only $2k I suppose. No way I can justify $2500 for it.

iMacs did the same thing at the same time.

That seems silly for a spec bump and they aren't going to do pre-orders for that long for just a spec bump.

Either they are ready close enough to WWDC or they don't talk about them at WWDC. Hopefully they have more exciting things to cover than a spec bump that everyone knows is gonna come.

It could also just be the fact the high end rMBP has the 750m which is in short supply.

The normal 15" rMBP without the 750m is "in stock" and ready to ship within 24 hours in the UK Apple store. The 750m high end model however says 2-3 weeks.

Keep in mind NVIDIA already replaced the 750m with the 850m and then 950m. I would bet NVIDIA is simply winding down the manufacturing of the 750m now that Apple is the only OEM still shipping computers with it in volume. Everyone else has moved on to the newer chips.

I think the Skylake MBPs won't just be an internal refresh but they will have redesigned hardware too. They will be thinner, lighter, use the new Thunderbolt 3 port, and use all the tech in the MB that they can (thinner screen, chrome logo on the back, force touch trackpad, USB C ports, thinner battery, etc). Also the MBAs will become redundant as well b/c the 13" pro will be smaller than the 13" air and the airs will eventually be discontinued too.

Has anybody noticed that there's also been less and less selection of both the rMBP 15s and riMacs in the refurbished store over the last few weeks too?

I just thought the sales went up after many holdouts realized the 15" wasn't going to be refreshed soon (like the 13" was). They probably recognized it's still a better value than any other MacBook if you need power and/or ergonomics (e.g. I find the screen size and its resolution much more comfortable to work on).

But maybe it was a supply problem when I thought it was a demand issue.

well...

I would like to say that I don't want to see a single usb c port where I need to attach dongles and stuff. I better get the full TB2 or TB3 (if it exists) along with the current line-up of ports. I still don't understand how the get away with the price-point of the new macbook.

IT'S APPle's biggest and until recently their 'best' laptop - I bought mine on day one 3 years ago Ac expires soon (they've replace my screen twice and MB once) and I want something better - I'd like an upgrade - hopefully they will announce a cool new retina 15 at WWDC

here's hoping I don't have to buy this same LT again

I'm in the exact same situation. AC is about to expire and I want a new laptop that's actually an upgrade. Everything that has shipped since 2012 was ... more or less the same?! The latest rMBP in its lowest configuration is _slower_ than the high end from 3 years ago. The high end ones are marginally faster.

Skylake speculation is silly, if broad well is delayed then why would the next one after be on time? Intel likes to present this neat development schedule as if it was a factory spitting out bricks. But the reality is there are actual engineers working on making chips smaller and faster and better and development can be messy, and doesn't often follow a 2 year tick-tock strategy. I mean, it does, but only in the minds of MBAs.
