While I agree with the pricing on the iPhone X, the reason I have not upgraded to that is because I simply can't afford that price-tag hehe. I have other priorities that come first. I am still using an iPhone 6 64GB which feels awfully slow. I also have an iPhone 6S plus which is still pretty fast. Just waiting on my 6 to quit to upgrade to a 7 or 8.

I purposely put off upgrading my 6 for the X. I even did freelance specifically to pay for it. (wish there was a path to paying for it with PayPal money.)

My primary reason for upgrading to the X versus the 8 is the camera. I don't want the size of the 8+, but even it doesn't have all the new phone features (optical stabilizer in zoom lens, front portrait mode) This is also why I didn't return the X.

My love for the phone is tempered by my growing dissatisfaction with FaceID. I love the form factor, don't notice the notch, love the new gestures, don't miss the home button, love the wireless charging and longer battery life.

In the end, Face ID is an Apple Fail because I have to THINK about how i unlock my phone almost every single time. I have to modify my casual behavior to unlock. If I don't, it will most likely not unlock. After FOUR months, I have not been able to unconsciously bring that sucker around to the front of my face. WHOAH! NOT TOO CLOSE! (guaranteed fail). I am so sick of the NOPE head shake or the need to hit cancel to try again.

I really hope some form of under the screen TouchID is instituted, but I doubt.

So people are setting with their old iPhone because it works fine and the iPhone X is to expensive. Sounds like to me there is little want factor behind the X and any want factor there is behind it, the customer looks at the price and says who needs to spend a thousand dollars when mine works fine. If it were cheaper, it wouldn’t scare people thinking of upgrading away. But this is apple, so next generation it will probably drop in price and have more features. I never buy a gen 1 Apple product.

That’s not at all what this survey claims.

It states that AMONG the people who decided not to upgrade, WHAT were your reasons. It has nothing to do with the millions who DID upgrade or with the fact the iPhone X has been selling like hot cakes.

"Piper Jaffray believes the iPhones coming in 2018 will address most of these issues, with Apple rumored to be planning to introduce three devices. One will be a followup to the iPhone X with a 5.8-inch OLED display, a second will have a larger 6.5-inch OLED display, and a third will feature a 6.1-inch LCD display with a lower price tag."

OK well lets give Apple the benefit of the doubt and say this "lower price tag" may not be quite $1000 but no doubt will be near, not cheap. The article says 31% don't upgrade because its too expensive, so lets say this "lower price tag" may reduce that figure by 5% to 26%. Then there are another 44% who don't upgrade because their present phone works fine, so 44% + 26% = 70%, so how on earth does this "address most of these issues", as 70% still will not upgrade?

Because the Notch ruins the looks. Duh.

Unless you work for Apple and have inside information, you don't know that. None of us do.
I live in Melbourne, FL where AuthenTec was based and Apple still has that site open. I do see job postings for them so I expect they are still active.

How can anyone draw conclusions from a survey like this? These are just the standard responses you're always going to get from customers that aren't ready to buy a new phone yet. Some people are always going to wait to buy models that aren't brand new in order to save some $$. Some people are always going to wait until their phone is obsolete before replacing it.

Price for me. Apple simply asking for too much. I guess they getting greedy and end users simply can't afford year in year out.

I haven't upgraded since 6s. Waiting for IOS 11 update that stops the clocking down of the phone speed.

I used an X that other day and feels so smooth- but price is just too much.

I have an X (upgrade to the newest phone yearly), and I honestly have to say that my 7 plus was the best iPhone I’ve ever owned (had every model except a 3GS). I don’t like the narrower screen of the X. I don’t really care for the notch, and faceID simply isn’t as convenient or quick/thoughtless as touchID is. I normally give my previous phones away to close friends or family members, yet I’ve held on to my 7 as I consider swapping back and giving the X away at least weekly.

It was price that made me evaluate the value of the X. I would have loved a modern design phone that was competitive with the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus phones, but instead Apple gave an S8 sized X at $1,000 and a now four-generation old design with the 8 and 8 Plus. Sorry, but under those conditions I defaulted to the other option which was my iPhone 6 Plus was doing enough that it wasn't worth it to upgrade to either the 8 or the X.

Hopefully Ming's rumors will be true and Apple will offer a small-bezel 6.1" LCD device that has the same design as the X but starts in the $700 range.

1. I (currently) don't want to spend over a grand on something they hope I'll upgrade every two years
2. I can't bear the idea of damaging or losing something that expensive

“upgraded because their iPhone works fine, suggesting there were no standout features compelling them to purchase a new device”

It could also suggest that they’re the sort of people that dont replace a thing that works just because some other thing elsewhere has new feature.

I upgraded my 6S to the X. One thing I "dislike" about the X is how fragile it seems. On my 6S I could go naked, without a case on it, on my X I tried it for a week but ended up with a silicon case. I'm really thinking of switching to an 8 because of this. Plus, people make fun of Apple going to far to make the iPhone thinner, but even though the X is just slightly thicker than my 6S, its a noticeable difference! One case which Ives' OCD works. lol.

I want a larger form factor. Delay in shipping, ordering would have impacted future upgrade cycle. I like to get the newest technology when its released. Unproven technology and Apples recent track record of releasing non functioning beta software. Examples - iPhone 5s Touch ID, MacBook Pro Keyboard iOS issues and repeated updates. Over priced for 64GB Phone and in my opinion didn't live up to what the 10th Anniversary iPhone should have been.

Lack of features have never hindered my purchase; I want the best camera they make if I can get it, and that's always the most recent. My primary hold out is price. In Canada, if you buy the 256gig version with a case you're up over $1800.00 CAD. That, sadly, has priced me out of the market unless it's absolutely necessary. Also, I fully expect that notch to go away sometime. I can't get past it--it's the most un-Apple eyesore ever to grace an iPhone. Every time someone tells me it's no big deal it feels like they're just saying it to justify the purchase price.

Yes, which is exactly what I said.

I decided not to upgrade.. why?

My phone works fine, and the iPhone X has a high price tag.

If the iPhone X had a lower price tag, maybe it would be considered as a buyer. Instead, I look at the price tag and think, well my phone works fine. If it were lower, maybe I would think, well my phone is getting pretty old and I am out of contract, and it has been acting a strange lately.

The iPhone X is too big for my tastes, way more expensive than I’d ever pay for a smartphone, and unnecessary because the phone I have is still trucking along fine.

"I haven't upgraded because I prefer a smaller form factor" notably absent...
Absolutely - SE or possibly a bit larger is what I need in a phone - I travel, bike, stow in front pocket - forget even an iPhone7. At some point the 3D cameras for scanning objects for printing will move me but for real phone functions the smaller size is what I need.
