Customers who use Apple's CarPlay feature report a higher satisfaction rate than those who are using Android Auto, according to data gathered by a new J.D. Power survey.

On a 1,000 point scale, Apple's CarPlay earned a satisfaction score of 777, compared to Android Auto's score of 748.

Though drivers appear to be more satisfied with CarPlay, Google still has an edge over Apple on navigation. Among owners who use their own navigation system, 56 percent choose Google Maps most often, while 16 percent use Waze most often.

Just 23 of respondents percent said that they prefer to use Apple Maps, and even iPhone owners were more likely to use Google Maps. These numbers could shift further in Google's favor with the release of iOS 12, which will give CarPlay users the ability to use third-party mapping apps in lieu of Apple Maps.

Overall, according to J.D. Power, most consumers consider phone systems like CarPlay and Android Audio better than native systems installed in cars.
"Most consumers consider phone systems better for navigation and voice recognition--and they're free. 'Better and free' are hard to compete with, so automakers will inevitably have to cede this territory and will be much better served by focusing on areas where they are the exclusive provider--like driver assistance and collision avoidance--and continue to hone those systems."
In fact, 19 percent of new vehicle owners who have factory-installed navigation options don't use it, and of those people, 70 percent use another device, which is "almost always" a smartphone.

While CarPlay was slow to roll out following its 2015 launch, it is now installed in hundreds of vehicles from nearly all prominent automobile manufacturers. Apple maintains a list of vehicles that include CarPlay support on its website.

CarPlay is also available as an aftermarket option in systems available from companies like Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, and Kenwood.

J.D. Power's data was gathered from a survey of nearly 20,000 vehicle owners and lessees, and the full report contains additional detail about the highest-ranking vehicles from 2018.

I am fairly happy with CarPlay. I would appreciate more applications to be available. Happy to hear Google Maps and a few others are coming soon.

I would like to try Android Auto as well but I jsut do not have direct access to an Android phone. The only one I would particularly like to try is a Pixel and I can't justify a second phone yet.

I have a 2018 Mercedes GLA-250. Apple Car Play is exceptionally difficult to use. It is time-consuming and almost impossible to get to each button on the Car Play screen. Navigation is all but unusable. After many tries, I have given up. I just use the Bluetooth connection for music and phone calls and rely on the internal Mercedes navigation system. If there are users who actually like Apple Car Play and choose to use it, then it must be that Mercedes somehow mangled the interface and is why Car Play is so absurdly difficult to use in the GLA-250.

No way to permanently disable carplay on a phone (I would like to charge only without car screen starting car play) and lack of wireless car play in 99% of cars sucks badly.
Check in your car's options screens when Car Play isn't connected. You may find an option to disable Car Play. Oddly, the option to disable it isn't available when Car Play is active.

Never used it in a Mercedes but it should be the same across all systems. I’ve used it for a couple of weeks now in a cheap Citroen C3 and it’s freaking amazing. The apps work well the only thing that bothers me sometimes is that it doesn’t load quickly but that’s maybe the car.

Even iPhone owners are more likely to use Google Maps than Apple Maps, whereas very few Android owners use Apple Maps.

Unless I'm missing something, Apple Maps isn't on Android at all, so it's pretty surprising that even "very few" Android owners are using it... I'd be surprised if any Android users are using it...

Makes it hard to take anything JD Power said in that report seriously.

I LOVE CarPlay in my Honda Civic EXT... when it works... which is about 10% of the time... otherwise it’s constantly disconnecting, glitching or crashing the whole car computer

You should be able to turn off CarPlay in the iPhone settings. The car should also have settings. And you should have a secondary charging only USB port that doesn’t integrate with CarPlay as well as a standard 12v charging receptacle.

This article points in one direction whereas the data can be pointed in another direction entirely.

According to the data presented, 81% of new vehicle owners who have factory-installed navigation options use those options. That's a heck of a lot of people not using CP/AA.

If Apple wants CP adoption to increase more quickly they should take a page out of Google's book and create a CarPlay app. No need to worry about which cars support it, and consumers could use it regardless of what car they own - old or new. As it stands, if the data is even close to being accurate, CP/AA can use all the help they can get.

The survey compared satisfaction between CarPlay and Android Auto users. The data point you referenced has zero relevance to the purpose or results of the survey.

Speed is largely dependent on the iPhone that’s plugged into it. The 6 was slow to load and animations stuttered on my Pioneer 4100NEX. My 6S Plus is a lot quicker and animations are smooth. On my wife’s 8 it’s instant. Zero lag.

It could be because people who use CarPlay have iPhones and people who use Android Auto have Android phones.

One generally works more reliably than the other. I don’t think it says much about the car system but more of the ecosystem.

CarPlay doesn't work with my 2015 Kia Soul. It has a button on the wheel and I follow the instructions but can never get it to connect.

[doublepost=1535673783][/doublepost]Is it only me? my Apple maps would not reliably zoom in and most of the time stay in overview mode on Audi QS5 2018 CarPlay. Very frustrating as navigator. I found no issues with other functions, but GPS keeps disappointing me. Can’t wait for google Maps or waze.

our ford has my ford sync. It uses Waze maps for voice nav. works great. only thing we do is bt the phones to it for music and sometimes Google maps. with ford sync you can call, send and receive text via voice atleast with a galaxy s9+ and LG v30. it also work3d with out old Android phones lg g5's.

Funny -- I have the opposite problem. CarPlay won't activate in my car unless I first unlock the phone when I plug it in. If I don't unlock it, nothing comes up on the dash.
