I just wish Apple put some time into making hands-free use work better for all of us driving non-CarPlay cars. You can't do basic things (like answer, hang-up calls), and I've had trouble even getting Siri to play one of my playlists, or reliably pause/play a podcast, etc.

It's kind of a mess. It's easier to just pull over.

Funny -- I have the opposite problem. CarPlay won't activate in my car unless I first unlock the phone when I plug it in. If I don't unlock it, nothing comes up on the dash.

If you go into settings, general, CarPlay, then click on your car there is an option to disable the lock feature when plugging you phone in.

my wife has a non-carplay car, and she just uses bluetooth
not sure whether siri is meant to work without carplay

I got a new Kenwood unit installed in my Jeep last week, and I use both Android Auto and CarPlay. My preference is for the layout of the CarPlay interface, but both systems have worked well so far. The navigation and voice recognition have worked much better than my factory system.

I visited my cousin in San Francisco recently and he drove me around in his truck which had Apple Carplay. Needless to say I was sold on how flawless it was in his truck. It makes me want to buy an Imprezza with Apple Carplay, (If only I had my Licence)

Yeah, mine doesn't have BT built-in either (unless you meant using a BT headset with the phone...), so I'd be using some kind of adapter into the aux-in anyway (which I doubt would improve things). But, since I typically plug the phone into power anyway, I don't get the advantage of wireless.

Siri works, it just isn't that good/helpful for most things while driving. I get the impression, Siri is more for people walking around San Francisco than the real world. Siri aside, though, there are just basic issues with audio routing.

It seems like once Apple decided on CarPlay, they just left the rest of the 'hands-free' aspects like half-baked. It's kind of a sad thing, as we keep hearing about distracted driving and people getting killed... and Apple can't be bothered to finish rudimentary hand's-free behavior.

CarPlay screams beta software from 2012 to me.

Everything is full-screen, multitasking doesn't exist. Common tasks like using Siri go full-screen unnecessarily, which covers the entire view (even when using MAPS, like, seriously). You can never see what song is playing.

Android auto on the other hand has sorted all this out. I smell BS in this 'survey'.

I would love to have Plex work with CarPlay natively. I have a lot of music on my PC and some tracks are not available on streaming services. If I load it up on the phone it will play through the CarPlay Music App. I’ve been using CarPlay for about a year in my Focus ST and it works pretty well. It’ll be nice to have other map options soon.

I use CarPlay in our 2017 Ford Fusion. I works flawlessly and the display is less distracting than Ford’s Sync.

Agreed that CarPlay works great with Ford sync 3. I have a 2018 fusion Energi and love it. Although I would have to say I like ford’s sync UI. To each their own, I guess. Too bad Ford is getting out of the passenger car market. :(

Speed largely dependent on the iPhone that’s plugged into it. The 6 was slow to load and animations stuttered on my Pioneer 4100NEX. My 6S Plus is a lot quicker and animations are smooth. On my wife’s 8 it’s instant. Zero lag.

This. Works quickly and flawlessly on my 8 Plus.

I used CarPlay for the first time on a consistent basis for my rental car of 10 days. I was extremely disappointed.

When in Apple Maps, there is no way to see Apple Music. Zero display information. This is a dealbreaker for me. Android Auto does not have this problem.

CarPlay NEEDS notification support or split screen optimization. It’s useless for my needs at the moment. I’m better off Bluetoothing the audio and mounting my phone for GPS info. It’s a much better experience and I had assumed I was using a band-aid system until I got CarPlay. Turns out, CarPlay was the system that needed a band-aid.

"Most consumers consider phone systems better for navigation and voice recognition--and they're free. 'Better and free' are hard to compete with, so automakers will inevitably have to cede this territory and will be much better served by focusing on areas where they are the exclusive provider--like driver assistance and collision avoidance--and continue to hone those systems."
Free? BMW is charging yearly for it as a subscription model. I wish Apple would take away their license to use it, otherwise these automakers won’t have to cede anything—the users will be ceding money right out of their wallet! They’ll wise up to this because not only will they no longer need to do any software R&D to build their own crappy nav systems with horrid UIs, but they’ll just be getting free money because users won’t have much choice.

Never used it in a Mercedes but it should be the same across all systems. I’ve used it for a couple of weeks now in a cheap Citroen C3 and it’s freaking amazing. The apps work well the only thing that bothers me sometimes is that it doesn’t load quickly but that’s maybe the car.
Does the Citroen C3 have a touch screen? The 2018 Mercedes GLA-250 does NOT have a touchscreen, which I think is part of why Apple CarPlay is so difficult to use in it.

I began using CarPlay in 2014 in with the original pioneer aftermarket unit, it was terrible and always crashed.

I then purchased a 2016 Honda Accord ex with CarPlay factory installed, reliability increased but still crashed 15-20% of the time.

Currently, I’m driving a 2018 BMW 440xi with wireless CarPlay and its flawless! Super fast, has never crashed and works seamlessly with BMW’s I drive. Bmw engineers nailed it!

Perhaps, just perhaps your car is to blame here ;) you have no CarPlay, and you have no blue tooth. I’m sorry but how are you expecting to have it work handfree with you vehicle? Sound like you need to get a better car.

On our Mercedes GLC43 I hold down the voice command button on the steeringwheel slightly longer than a single press and it bypasses Mercedes linguatronic ans instead activated Siri over the speakers. That is standard behaviour via the wireless protocols. And you can talk normally to her.

But on topic, as said befor on a 1000 point scale 777 vs 747 is barely a conclusive difference. Where I love in the south of the United Kingdom Apple Maps works extremely well, so I happily continue using that. But like earlier this week I was in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Apple Maps is just usefulness. Google Maps was the only one working reliably. As did the Mercedes inbuilt System.

No way to permanently disable carplay on a phone (I would like to charge only without car screen starting car play) and lack of wireless car play in 99% of cars sucks badly.
CarPlay has to be turned on in the first place, it is not on by default. You can switch it of at anytime on your phone.

Mine works well in my Acura. I use the buttons on my steering wheel to invoke Siri, answer and hang up calls.

I like CarPlay fine. I just don't use it that much. Even with my Apple Music subscription. I prefer my loaded USB drive that I have plugged into my car. I don't use navigation much, but it's fine when I do. It is nice, if I actually plug my phone in to use it, to use it for messaging. But really, there's nothing on it that makes me want/need to use it much.

CarPlay is designed specifically for it not be distracting. The driver should never be distracted by things having nothing to do with the car’s performance and the traffic ahead.

Split screens and pop-up notifications are the biggest distractions and cause accidents.
