Funny -- I have the opposite problem. CarPlay won't activate in my car unless I first unlock the phone when I plug it in. If I don't unlock it, nothing comes up on the dash.
my wife has a non-carplay car, and she just uses bluetoothI just wish Apple put some time into making hands-free use work better for all of us driving non-CarPlay cars. You can't do basic things (like answer, hang-up calls), and I've had trouble even getting Siri to play one of my playlists, or reliably pause/play a podcast, etc.
It's kind of a mess. It's easier to just pull over.

not sure whether siri is meant to work without carplay
I use CarPlay in our 2017 Ford Fusion. I works flawlessly and the display is less distracting than Ford’s Sync.
Speed largely dependent on the iPhone that’s plugged into it. The 6 was slow to load and animations stuttered on my Pioneer 4100NEX. My 6S Plus is a lot quicker and animations are smooth. On my wife’s 8 it’s instant. Zero lag.
It is like splitting hairs. Bigger numbers impart a certain level of faux gravitas on the data. Why do you think a 1000 point scale was used?777 vs 748? That seems like splitting hairs to say one is more liked than the other.
Free? BMW is charging yearly for it as a subscription model. I wish Apple would take away their license to use it, otherwise these automakers won’t have to cede anything—the users will be ceding money right out of their wallet! They’ll wise up to this because not only will they no longer need to do any software R&D to build their own crappy nav systems with horrid UIs, but they’ll just be getting free money because users won’t have much choice."Most consumers consider phone systems better for navigation and voice recognition--and they're free. 'Better and free' are hard to compete with, so automakers will inevitably have to cede this territory and will be much better served by focusing on areas where they are the exclusive provider--like driver assistance and collision avoidance--and continue to hone those systems."
Does the Citroen C3 have a touch screen? The 2018 Mercedes GLA-250 does NOT have a touchscreen, which I think is part of why Apple CarPlay is so difficult to use in it.Never used it in a Mercedes but it should be the same across all systems. I’ve used it for a couple of weeks now in a cheap Citroen C3 and it’s freaking amazing. The apps work well the only thing that bothers me sometimes is that it doesn’t load quickly but that’s maybe the car.
Perhaps, just perhaps your car is to blame hereYeah, mine doesn't have BT built-in either (unless you meant using a BT headset with the phone...), so I'd be using some kind of adapter into the aux-in anyway (which I doubt would improve things). But, since I typically plug the phone into power anyway, I don't get the advantage of wireless.
Siri works, it just isn't that good/helpful for most things while driving. I get the impression, Siri is more for people walking around San Francisco than the real world. Siri aside, though, there are just basic issues with audio routing.
It seems like once Apple decided on CarPlay, they just left the rest of the 'hands-free' aspects like half-baked. It's kind of a sad thing, as we keep hearing about distracted driving and people getting killed... and Apple can't be bothered to finish rudimentary hand's-free behavior.
CarPlay doesn't work with my 2015 Kia Soul. It has a button on the wheel and I follow the instructions but can never get it to connect.
CarPlay has to be turned on in the first place, it is not on by default. You can switch it of at anytime on your phone. No way to permanently disable carplay on a phone (I would like to charge only without car screen starting car play) and lack of wireless car play in 99% of cars sucks badly.
Mine works well in my Acura. I use the buttons on my steering wheel to invoke Siri, answer and hang up calls.I just wish Apple put some time into making hands-free use work better for all of us driving non-CarPlay cars. You can't do basic things (like answer, hang-up calls), and I've had trouble even getting Siri to play one of my playlists, or reliably pause/play a podcast, etc.

I used CarPlay for the first time on a consistent basis for my rental car of 10 days. I was extremely disappointed.
When in Apple Maps, there is no way to see Apple Music. Zero display information. This is a dealbreaker for me. Android Auto does not have this problem.
CarPlay NEEDS notification support or split screen optimization. It’s useless for my needs at the moment. I’m better off Bluetoothing the audio and mounting my phone for GPS info. It’s a much better experience and I had assumed I was using a band-aid system until I got CarPlay. Turns out, CarPlay was the system that needed a band-aid.
