Still contemplating sushi for a late March eat. And yes back to Simply Sushi for the best big all you can eat crunch.

I'll make you sushi lovers jealous. In Hilo, the sushi is good because the fish is very fresh and the Japanese population very large. So you have ingredients and audience. My favorite place (Ocean Sushi) is inexpensive. I've never managed to spend more than $40 getting two people full. True, the decor is basic diner tables, but it's inexpensive.

So consider: two people, almost too much to eat, can't crack $40. That's Hilo.

I had some great Sushi in Hong Kong last week. If you like Sushi this place is not bad but you must stand as there are no seats at this restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui off of Cameron Road. I ordered their Blue Fin Tuna Bowl. The Bowl in Hong Kong $300 HKD. Not cheap but you get amazing Blue Fin Tuna if you are a Blue Fin Tuna fan. Their tea though leaves a lot to be desired.

I absolutely adore sushi.

I absolutely adore sushi.
I am a huge sushi fan. If you are in California there is a place called Otoro. He has 3 locations now and is in the process of opening up a 4th location in Little Tokyo (downtown LA). There is good and bad to this place. The owner is from Taiwan and mainly aims at targeting Chinese customers. He gets the best fish and hand picks it every morning in downtown LA at the Fish market. I went with him there a couple of times. Most restaurant owners don't bother to wake up at 3:30-4:00 am to drive down to the fish market to pick out fish. The knit picky ones drive down there and pick it out themselves. What is left over after picking gets placed on the delivery trucks and sent out to all the other sushi restaurants. This place is not cheap and his prices are in my opinion on the high side. He is on the cheap side himself with portions given to customers but is very generous with paying when buying the best fish on the market. He is closed on Sunday's and Monday's. Lunch time is a good time to go to have some sushi. I would avoid Tuesday's though and Saturday evening for dinner. When it comes to fish and sushi quality in my opinion he ranks in the top two. There is one location in Walnut and one in Irvine that I like going to. If you sit at the Sushi bar you can only order from the sushi bar and not from the menu. He pretty much want to separate the prestige customers for the bar and regular customers in the seating area. Most of the prime cuts and special pieces if not huge quantity is available are usually kept for regular customers at the sushi bar.
Some images from his restaurant.

Yum! Sushi is a regular occurrence for me. Every Wednesday I hit up my local Japanese store/restaurant and have a sushi bento for lunch. Can't wait till this weeks!

I remember back in Taiwan if there was rain it was hard to find fish as when heavy rains were in place fishermen did not go out to sea to go fishing. I would avoid sushi at the restaurants that week. Would have Hot Pot (Shabu Shabu) instead

All this talk (or discussion) of sushi prompted me to purchase some from a Japanese lady in the farmers' market; thus, I have some Teriyaki chicken sushi, some salmon sushi and some tuna sushi. Yum.

Plus soya sauce and pickled ginger.

If you add tax and tip to that bottle it comes out to almost $800  I will stick with some hot green tea and spend money on sushi instead tonight. Leave those bottles for the wealthy Chinese that come here :p
