Nice! The sushi my daughter and I had today didn't look half as good as that. Our salmon was good, though!

Sushi can be a hit or a miss. I looked at the Salmon today and it did not look good. The Sushi Chef told me it was good, from there on I knew I had to pick out on my own and not take his word for it. You were lucky your Salmon was good today. In America quite often (the Asians working in the Sushi industry) have this perception when they see a white Guy is that the white guy doesn’t know great from ok and bad when it comes to sushi and Asian food. This is why many Koreans open up sushi places and sell roles. They can use cheaper fish and add sauce to it. Most will ask for more sauce.

We bought ours from our local Japanese Market/Restaurant. They cater to everyone, but are primarily for a Japanese clientele, so they can't afford a crappy attitude. Their fish isn't as high a quality as a prime sushi joint, but it's as good as most sushi restaurants in the Midwest.

Today I decided to try the Blue Fin Toro Salad with the Blue Fin Tuna Rolls. Not bad

I just had my regular takeout sushi. Tuna rolls, salmon, tuna and shrimp nigiri. It was good enough!
Nice :) My salad unfortunately had consisted of something in the actual salad mix that tasted like the salad had a dirt taste to it which reminded me of beets that tasted like dirt o_O It looked great something in that salad was off. One of those greens in there just was not right so I finished the tuna and passed on the greens.

Well, based on the picture it might have been the beet leaves. They can be iffy in a salad. The seaweed looked tasty, though! As did the tuna!

I spaced out on that one and missed it. You are right it did contain beet leaves . Picture wise it looked great but in my honest opinion the beet leaves killed it :(

Doesn't ever work on anyone who's fished a lot and knows what fish is good or bad by slicing it up on the boat or anyone who's been around the world enough to know when something isn't cooked correctly. I've called a few chef's out on their BS in the past.

Generally, even in a seafood eating state like this, if you want fresh fish, you can try an Asian market. There's a few good Japanese and Korean places that sell probably tons of fish and other creatures a day. Those are good, but I have sometimes given the department heads the finger for attempting to lie to me. There's one place that's very good but also pricey. They're one of my usual fish mongers, and they know me after I've been going there for about 20 years. They managed to near overnight fresh wild Alaskan salmon on heaps of ice a few years ago for Easter.

I only touch Alaskan and Scottish if they have it in stock or if I make an order worth their while. I wouldn't touch other Atlantic salmon with a barge pole. I don't know if you've had Scottish salmon, but it's out of this world in terms of flavor. So is the price. It hovers between $15.99/lb at the low end to $24.99 at the high end. Price is seasonal and can fetch higher during or around holidays. It's got beautiful thick marbling and has a melt in your mouth flavor that says it's salmon without tasting fishy. Alaskan is great, but it's dense. Which I like if I'm grilling it or baking it whole with the inside stuffed with herbs and lemon. At butter pats at the end to enhance flavor without burning off the milk solids.

I detest beet leaves. I know many people who love them in a salad or in soups and stews. Blegh. Beets are so hit and miss for me. Often times I can pickup mild mineral flavors in the beets and it ruins an entire dish for me. I usually forgo them. So far the beets I've bought this year have been extremely sweet. And with that, it's likely I've just jinxed future beet purchases.

My favourite Sushi is Avocado and Salmon rolls <3

Then Tuna and Avocado rolls then Avocado rolls own.. Others are good as well but I don't experiment much :O

My local sushi takeaway place is really nice, always seems so fresh.

I live in Alaska and we have a lot of fish/seafood, however if you like fish/seafood you have to visit Japan! You can easily eat seafood for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and snacks every day without a problem and I am not talking about eating at the same places over and over. When you hear they eat a lot of fish.,., they eat a LOT of fish over there.
I have been there a few times and I will tell you after about 3 weeks I get so sick of all the seafood and avoid it completely for a day or two.

I also found it strange that Rolls aren’t as prevalent as they are here.

A little trivia, people assume that if you catch a fresh salmon in a steam that it must make for good sushi/sashimi. However you don’t want to eat salmon from fresh water, once the salmon cross from salt water to fresh water that is when they can pick up parasites/worms that can make you really sick.

In America mostly Koreans open up Sushi places selling rolls as most/many Americans want cheaper sushi and want something with some sort of sauce on inside or on top of it. Not the case in Japan or true sushi lovers. Food portion consumed is also not the same so cost would be quite high to eat say 20 pieces of good sushi at say $10-15 per price. Tax and tip one would be well over $200 to eat sushi out here o_O .

The standing sushi bar Totoro, situated just outside the JR Himeji Station, serves the best sushi I've eaten so far. Their fatty bluefin tuna, squid and prawn sushi are melt-in-the-mouth good. Best of all, the set pictured above was extremely reasonably priced, at about 1560 yen for ten pieces of delicious sushi, a bowl of miso soup and free-flow tea. I would definitely make a trip back there if I visit Himeji Castle again in future.

Tamago at home is such a chore but it's rewarding once you can do it right. I bought a cake tin for it. The faintly sweet savory flavor is beautiful. Goes well with a nice chilled cava.

So jelly.. :)
I am planing another trip to the Northern Island(Hokkaido) at the moment(in 2020). I normally ride motorcycles when I am in Japan and I try to avoid the large cities as much as possible because it is tough on a motorcycle and it wastes a lot of time getting in and out of(better to park it and train it). I have ridden across all 4 main islands. I have spent a few nights wandering around the Susukino district in Sapporo and that was a blast. I never been to Tokyo other then a unscheduled overnight capsule hotel visit at Narita. I want to visit Shibuya station and wander around Tokyo before I die.

Here is a picture from a hotel in Ikata Japan. It is a fishing village on the island of Shikoku. This was the FIRST course! One of the best meals in my life!

You're in my old stomping grounds near Kobe! Beautiful places to visit and loads of the best foods on Earth. Wish I was back there to enjoy that sushi!

I often make very simple avocado rolls at home during summer. It's a break from guacamole or just having some sliced avocado w/ lemon, salt and pepper. Cut up an avocado dipped in lemon juice, wrap pieces in nori around some rice, bring out the wasabi, stick a fat slice of lemon on the side because I love lemon, call it good... and it's good enough for me.

Too hot here for even anything that uncomplicated, I've just been having things like cold cereal with fruit, then lunch was a little hummus w/ some pita chips, tonight will be just a tomato and lettuce salad, with a little poached chicken that I had prepared last night and stuck in the fridge.

On my mind: gratitude it has "only" got up to 86ºF here today in the heat wave. So far we've not lost electrical power. That's a real plus not having to wonder when to start triaging contents of our respective refrigerators and freezers. Imported sushi from town would be pretty top of the list.

Oh my new here to the forums and I found my perfect discussion area. Here’s to my roe fanatics.
