I've had the case since Monday and the smell is slowly fading. I love the case but I have not been using it as I'm waiting for the smell to go away.

Is it me or is the Velcro, losing its power after a weeks worth of use.

I had this problem after a day of extensive use. Upon the inspection, the felt and the velcro, however, look normal and clean.

Here was the method I restored it..

- take out the iPad from the case,
- press the polycarbonate case against the back
- put the iPad back in the case and you will find the velcro regains its power.

So in my case, it was probably the softness of the material which make the velcro a poor contact to each other..

Updatethe velcro loses power again after some use....

For those who used the previous version of older Canvas for iPad 2, does the velcro lose power after some use? What I mean losing power is you no longer hear the velcro sound anymore.

In my case, I have to take it the iPad out and press the polycarbonate case in order to make the velcro in good contact.

Any solutions? Thanks.

Take a credit card and start scraping the soft Velcro strip (the part that is attached to the polycarbonate case). This will temporarily fix your Velcro issue, but you will need to keep doing this every once in awhile as this is a reoccurring problem with Velcro.

Thanks for your tips! It works. :) I didn't knnw such a simple fix would work like a charm. :)

I got my Canvas (Black) today. I am pleased with the overall design. The new iPad fits well in the backing and the case provides the protection that I want. I will be placing my iPad (while in the Canvas case) inside a 10.2" generic neoprene sleeve for added padding while in my briefcase, and it fits perfectly.

It does smell a little (not too bad, and I'm hyper sensitive to smells).

My only problem is that the magnets are erratic. They don't work consistently, and I can take the device (with the case closed) and move my wrist to flip the device around and the magnets will go on-off-on-off like crazy. I suppose I'll contact the vendor, but I'll probably turn the magnets off in settings and keep the case. The magnetic on-off is not a feature I really care about, but if the device is constantly turning on and off in my bag, draining the battery, its a problem.

I'll definitely be returning my Belkin Cinema Dot Folio, which is very flimsy compared to the Switcheasy Canvas.

This is why I miss the latch on the old canvas. I like this case but I am having similar issues as you are. I will probably get the Speck Magfolio when they become available.

I think any case (aside from the Apple magnetic cover) will have issues. Only the Apple cover is perfectly form fitting and does not move at all. Any other case (especially folio style) is going to have some give, and will have an on-off issue.

After a couple of weeks with it, I can't stand the new design - IMO everything was changed for the worst.

- Sometime when I open it there are swirly smuges all over the screen. The old case would leave 2 vertical smudges but I found that far more tolerable.

- Now that the material has worn in it has a very difficult time holding anything but a very upright position, especially if I interact with the screen. I think the deep grooves on the old folio were a lot better.

- Likewise, the typing position quickly wears out. It's pretty much just laying flat.

- Toss in the lack of a camera fold and the occasionally wonky on/switch and I just don't see any advantages in this design. I'm back on the market for a good case, hopefully I can get a refund or at least get a little money back from eBay.

Can anyone advise if the new iPad canvas colour for, I believe, brown is actually brown?

In the photos I have seen it looks like a burnt orange. I like the burnt orange but I don't want brown lol

It's kind of like the grey being olive hhaha

It pains me to agree with almost all of your points– I really wanted to love this case… No really.

For me the biggest frustration is the now total lack of a typing position. When I first got the case the rigid back and stiffness of the case material did provide for pretty decent typing position. But now, like you, my iPad just flattens out in what was the typing position.

I have also encountered the issue with the "stand" feature of the case really only working for the most upright of positions. Even in a mostly upright position the effectiveness of the mechanism they designed for the screen to "grab" on to the inside cover to keep it up fails pretty badly. The rubber stoppers meant to grip to the inside case appear (to me at least) to be made of two hard plastic and just mostly slide along rather than grip the textured material of the inside cover. Further – if this stand is on anything that moves like a bed or couch or touch or even lightly tap the screen the case will frequently flop down and go from an upright position to the laying flat position. Very disappointing indeed.

It's too bad too – because I actually really like the approach of this case along with the build quality and materials. Everything feels great – with an excellent fit and finish. More than anything it seems like they got too clever for themselves. I feel as though if the rubber stopper/grips were of a much more tacky, eraser like material they might do a much better job of gripping the cover – or just go with the old design approach and have some deep slots for the case to sit into. This might also solve the issue of a lack of a typing position – which for me is the biggest bummer of all.

Has anyone else out there fallen out of love with their SwitchEasy Canvas case?

Or is my experience unique and others have cases that are working just fine?

I haven't seen it in person but I can see why you think it looks like Burt orange. Given the fact they call it brown I feel like that's the color it's supposed to look like and it probably does. I do know that switch easy is great with replacements and returns if you ordered from them so I would say give it a shot.

Yeah, it was hard for me to admit I didn't like the case too. If it had a decent typing position I could have forgiven the other issues. I'm going to give the STG Grip a try, Metagamers says its his favorite iPad 3 case so far and he's the reason I got the Canvas for my iPad 2.

You are correct that right now the STM Grip is my favorite case however it is not without it's faults. In my video I call out that the longer stand can require some effort to open but I will say that once in stand mode it's not going anywhere (and that's a good thing). While I don't use the rear camera on the iPad often I do wish in ways that the Grip had a fold in the cover but that would then seriously mess with the design of the case so I understand why it does not have one. If you absolutely have to have a case this instant I think it's one of the best choices out there and thus the reason why I rank it so high.

If you can wait I am hopeful for the Speck Magfolio which looks good on paper and in pictures.

In regards to the Canvas I still think its a great case and stand by my video review. While I have swapped out my cases for review reasons, my wife has the red canvas which she uses on a daily basis and it's held up well with no issues on the sleep/awake or stands. However, I am curious abut the QC on these cases since I keep hearing various degrees of issues with it (smell, stands, etc...)

Moving back to the Grip I noticed tonight that ilounge posted their review and gave it a B+ which would be pretty much in line with my 4.5 out of 5

Any news on the cara?

I've emailed to see if the ipad2 cara is compatible with the new iPad. Just waiting for a reply.

I hate mine. The wake magnets work maybe 5% of the time. The "prop" angle slowly slides until it's at it's lowest point. The magnetic closure flys open if you breathe on it. And of course the smell is nauseating.

This case goes down as the most overhyped product I've purchased in recent memory. People were (and are) swooning over it. I just don't get it.

It's going back ASAP. Smart cover and BSE on the back. I'm done with cases.

This, although the smell on mine went away for the most part after airing it out for a few days. I just couldn't get myself to like this case, so I sold it to someone locally today. It's either the STM Grip, or back to the Black or Red smart cover with belkin snapshield secure or smartfeather.

As sad as I am to say it, because I loved the Canvas for the iPad 2 even with its one or two faults, the Canvas for the current generation iPad is no longer sitting well with me.

I've seen lots of comments on here about the magnets. That isn't an issue for me. These are:

1) The rubber "feet" are totally ineffective. Try to stand it up and as someone else said, aside from the steepest possible position, the feet just slide down to the lowest possible angle.

2) Velcro. What type of cheap garbage are they using for the velcro on this thing? It was a problem with my iPad 2 Canvas as well. I got my current Canvas in the first wave of shipping. The velcro was noticeably stronger with this case. I thought "great!" and it took no time at all to fail. Just flops all the way open when I open the cover.

3) I can tell that the typing angle is getting shallower and shallower. Soon, like others, mine will be lying flat instead of a nice typing angle, which I praised in another post about this case.

It's a shame. I really want to like it a lot. :(

I definitely feel you on the overhyped factor – and maybe I'll go from having fallen out of love to out right disliking – but for now I still think this case is kind of nice.

I definitely feel the exterior cover material is a little cheap feeling – I would've much preferred if it was literally a tightknit canvas material. That's the one thing that really bothers me about this case – the feel in your hand of the outside just feels cheap. I would gladly pay another $10, $15, or maybe even $20 for a nice leather exterior.

And I will agree that the stand mechanism is definitely wonky.. In looking back at their iPad 2 canvas case it's a disappointing step backwards. It certainly looks "cooler" but for me, in my experience, the rubber stoppers just don't do an effective job at keeping the case grip in a standing position very well. I would have much preferred the indentations from the earlier model. It might have left you with less possible standing positions but I'd rather have three that work rather than 20 that only kind of sort of work and one that does.

The one thing that I really, really, really like about this case – and have yet to see executed well on any other case (and I did a lot of research) is the super protection provided by very well executed snap in plastic cradle that the iPad sits in. Especially when you put in the provided dock and audio jack covers the whole thing just feels and looks super smartly designed and protects everything except for the surface of the actual iPad. It's much cleaner looking at effective than any of the strange solutions in other cases like a leather frame that sits around the bezel or little plastic grips in the corners or anything like that. All of those solutions just look kind of silly and cheap compared to how cleanly the canvas case sits and snaps around the iPad.

Now my particular case has magnets that work perfectly for both auto on/off functionality and keeping the lid nice and closed. I would certainly be disappointed and bummed out if the magnets did not work effectively for both of their intended functions.

And while I do agree that there was a lot of hype with the release of this case and a lot of justifiable disappointment about issues – some of which will hopefully be resolved (magnets, smell) and others which are likely to not be (stand mechanism, exterior material feel) – I wouldn't exaggerate the disappointment so much that for readers of this thread: if you look at this case, and think it's likely to be perfect for you, don't be scared away and pass on it just because of some of the negative comments. I do feel bad because I feel like I contributed to the hype – and I was disappointed – but putting my "reasonable person hat" on and thinking that overall there's no such thing as the perfect case – everyone has their own priorities, expectations and things they're willing to live with. For me, at least, I feel like I was expecting the PERFECT case and just ended up with a really good one.

Finally, criticisms of the case aside, I've been ordering things off the Internet for over 10 years and I have never (never ever) ordered anything and been happier with the speed and generosity of the response from a customer service department as I have been with SwitchEasy. If you think you might like this case I would STRONGLY recommend you order it directly from SwitchEasy rather than a third-party vendor. Not only will they nearly instantly offer to give you your money back if you're not 100% satisfied but they will aggressively work to quickly resolve each and every issue you might have with the case whether it be something not working or you just changed your mind with something like the color.

(Sorry if I sound like some sort of "shill" for the company – I promise I'm not. I just feel bad because I was part of the hype machine and then jumped on the the un-hype machine due to my disappointment about what I now think were unrealistic expectations. I know it's not a cheap case and it's totally appropriate to expect something great but, on the other hand, I've never been more impressed with any customer service department in my life - and to me it really helped to compensate for some of my disappointment.)

Good luck to all on their quest for the perfect case!

(Sigh)

I totally agree with you on all your points except for maybe the Velcro. I think I was the one that first made a comment about the rubber feet being ineffective. I just got a replacement case and they're much better but I feel like it's a matter of time before they're as bad as I encountered on my first case. I really feel like if they were made from a more eraser like material and less of a hard plastic they would've been more effective – but what do I know.

As for the Velcro - I haven't encountered any issues yet but it would definitely suck if it stopped working.

TOTALLY in agreement about typing angle. My first case ended up lying pretty flat. I'm on my replacement case and it's holding up better but I do think it's just a matter of time before it becomes too flexible and lays flat. That could, ultimately, end up being the dealbreaker for me. My expectation is that a "close to perfect" case design includes a functioning typing position.

I got a replacement from their EU store yesterday, and while the auto on/off works now, this new case smells incredibly toxic. It's a horrible stench really. I hope it goes away. Other than that, I believe I am satisfied so far. Lid magnet could have been stronger, but it's ok.

My replacement had quite a strong smell as well. Normally I would charge my iPad at night on my bedstand but the smell was so bad I actually had to set up the charger in in another room so I could breathe easy at night.

After a few days the smell went away though so hopefully your case stops smelling in a few days as well.

My lid magnets on my replacement case seemed weak as well. I think they didn't initially line up perfectly because my spine was so stiff. After a few days the spine loosened up which allowed the top of the case to lay flat against the iPad which in turn allowed the magnets to make better contact and it's much better now. Still not as strong as my initial case – but at least the wake/sleep function works. I hope your case encounters this same change as well.

Yeah the spine on mine is really stiff aswell, If I just flap the cover shut, it won't go all way down, before I force it. I'm sure this will wear in, and yeah, that might be the reason to why the lid magnet feels weaker than on my first cover.
