Login items are a complete mess as for now.
They've removed the "start hidden" option, but I do like the list of services (agents and daemons) they now include.

Also, click on the Apple ID at the top of the list on the left - it looks so much better (to me) than the previous version. I've been using Ventura betas since the first dev beta, and I'm getting used to the new Settings app.

I hate the new System Settings app on macOS Ventura. I will be sticking with Monterey for a while I think. I don't see why they had to change it. There is nothing wrong with how it functions now. It feels like they are trying to dumb it down to an iPad level.
The biggest problem is, whenever you buy a new Mac, it comes pre-installed with the latest macOS version, and you can't install older versions. It really annoys me. macOS is slowly but surely going down the drain, and the only solution is to hold onto hardware for years and years, which is not really a solution.

Well, there is also another solution, of course. Start a new computing company with Apple quality hardware (but with upgradeability, repairability, and modularity), and a new OS similar to macOS but without the dumbing down of features. Anyone with any bored billionaire friends looking for a fun project?

They also shuffled a bunch of settings around so you can't find them, searching will sometimes link to a settings pane that doesn't exist, and some more obscure settings have been inexplicably removed. Not a fan honestly, reminds me of Microsoft when they switched to the new settings app.
They're making it as hard to use on Mac as it already is on iOS. Good to know because I'm not a fan of the iOS settings app in general. Just recently I put in "Mail" in the search, about as basic as it gets, and two results came up with the name "Mail". The first was not the one I was looking for. What I was actually looking for was basically "Internet Accounts" in the MacOS System Preferences but iOS doesn't have that and it always annoyed me.

They got to be careful. The number one reason why a lot of people move to Mac is macOS. There was a time where I had to restart my windows computer every 2 or 3 days due to it becoming sluggish. My Mac computer would run a week or 2 at a time without issues. Now a days it seems like things are flipped. Windows seems to be able to run a whole week without too much issues but my Mac has to be restarted every 2 or 3 days due to it becoming sluggish.

Agree to disagree. SwiftUI for Mac has some very rough edges that cut into the user experience. Things that AppKit has been doing right all along.
Granted, AppKit or UIKit is much more advanced (or should I say more precisely, has way more possibilities and features) than SwiftUI, and also that SwiftUI seems to be made for iOS first and seems like a port for macOS. It doesn't feel native.

But 80% of the issues mentioned in the Twitter thread come from a bad design (ie a long ScrollView container with options at the bottom - I mean, wrap the scrollview and options with a VStack and we're done) and 20% is really SwiftUI itself.

Beta used to mean “it’s finished; check for bugs”. This is more like alpha. Every piece of software from Apple has gotten increasingly worse since 2013.

The worst part? This is Apple lowering themselves to the same level as the rest of this nightmare industry.
As someone said earlier in this thread. All of his complaints were fixed in the current beta.

The new System Settings is terrible for working with multiple monitors connected, especially if they are the same model. In older MacOS versions, opening Displays preferences would put a settings window on each monitor, with the specific settings for that monitor, so you know which one you are configuring. That makes it easier to work with multiple monitors that are the same model. But in Monterey and Ventura, there is only the single window interface where you have to first click on one of the monitors in the list and hope that you selected the correct one.

Same issue when configuring wallpapers. Where it used to put a settings window on each monitor, now you have to click on a monitor in the list and hope that you selected the correct one.

The new Displays and Wallpaper settings look like they were worked on by summer interns who have never used MacOS before, and did not think to test with multiple identical monitors connected. It resembles the terrible Microsoft Windows display settings.

In Network settings, certain functions can only be accessed by secondary clicking on the interface. In older MacOS versions, those same functions were available by clicking on a button that was plainly visible. Why does Apple publish Human Interface Guidelines that warn developers to not make secondary clicking and context menus the only way to access a command, even while Apple does not follow their own rules?

As usual, only update to the new OS when it has ".1". The first release always has lots of bugs. Not to mention the beta here.

The foundational design of this new app is so flawed they should just dump it. And maybe do the same with SwiftUI considering how old it is and how horrible it still is

This is a great video of Tim Cook talking about how important it is to realize when they as a company have been working super hard on something that is fundamentally flawed and not get stuck against that wall

The new System Settings app is a perfect example of that and a perfect example of why SwiftUI might never be ready for prime time

These bugs are unprecedented. Basic UI elements like buttons and popup menus just don't work. There's nothing normal about this. Like I said above, the foundation of the UI isn't stable enough to work at the most basic level

Dude, I'm disappointed in you as I have followed you a while. The industry (Apple, Linux, Windows) is finding it harder and harder to create new UI that is impressive over the Status Quo. Everyone that uses a computer is VERY likely to have a unique collection of apps and that is why some folks have no problem with updates, and for others it's a NIGHTMARE. This is what Betas are for...

Irrelevant to the conversation. It's a Design and/or QA problem at the core, not a framework problem.

All of the points mentioned by the developer in the article are valid and can be fixed, SwiftUI or not.
Exactly. Gruber calling out SwiftUI as though he actually knows is a bit of a joke.

My thinking is they KNOW SwiftUI has issues and the best way to address those is to force internal teams to use it and iron out the issues as they go. Is it pretty? Nope. And I won’t be updating to Ventura for a while. But I suspect someone at the company is pushing major redesigns to use SwiftUI for exactly this reason.

Can I also say as a dev, it gives me some comfort to see I’m not the only one putting out crap to meet tight deadlines. Must be stressful.

It won't be long before you can only install apps from the Mac App Store and have only limited access to the file system. All in the name of privacy and security.
I doubt it. MacOS is a totally different thing from iOS

The current settings “app” is a mess. The iOS like side bar is way better. Let’s just assume they can cleanup the minor UI issues like misaligned text without everyone getting their knickers in a knot and starting the whole apple is doomed and looking back at Steve Jobs with rose colored glasses..

Well, they have a “crack team” working on picking names for macOS releases, maybe after witnessing their success they assembled such team for UI design, too 🤔
Considering one of the earlier comments was "It's like it was designed by a bunch of interns on crack" that has to be unintentional pun...I hope.

It seems Apple's redesigned macOS Ventura System Settings app, which replaces the System Preferences found in macOS Monterey and earlier versions, is still not without its problems five betas in, as catalogued by developer Niki Tonsky on Twitter.

macos-ventura-system-settings-featured.jpg

For those unfamiliar with it, the new System Settings app looks more akin to the Settings app on the iPhone and iPad than it does to the earlier macOS preferences panels, with settings placed in a sidebar for supposedly easier access.

However, Tonsky's thread highlights several bugs and issues with the interface layout in developer betas 4 and 5 of macOS Ventura, including inconsistent use and erratic behavior of basic UI elements like dropdowns and buttons, misaligned text and poorly sized windows, menu titles that are cut off by menu windows, misplaced content, and more.

The System Settings app is built using SwiftUI, Apple's cross-platform user interface layer that works across iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. Another complex app written in SwiftUI, Shortcuts, has also drawn criticism for similar UI and performance bugs on both macOS and iOS.

Linking to and commenting on Tonsky's tweet thread on his own website, Daring Fireball's John Gruber said there is "something deeply wrong with SwiftUI that, even while in-progress, so many little layout details are apparently hard to get right."
In an interview with Gruber on The Talk Show Live at WWDC 2022, Craig Federighi said that despite what some may think, ‌macOS Ventura‌'s System Settings redesign was not largely inspired by iOS. Federighi insisted that the development team's main goal was consistency for users, and said System Settings on ‌macOS Ventura‌ is a "great interface."

Despite the lingering issues, there's still time for Apple to correct them, as macOS Ventura isn't likely to be scheduled for release until October, or perhaps even early November. Have you had similar experiences interacting with System Settings in the latest beta? What do you think of the new look? Let us know in the comments.

Exactly the level of software quality I would expect after two years of "working" from home. No real time collaboration and no in person quality control leads to this.

Exactly, haha. System Settings has its issues, but System Preferences wasn't a perfect application made out of unicorn cake frosting, either. People forget that even back in the Jobs days, Apple's software had issues too. Yes, even their beloved Snow Leopard had its own quirks and issues.

Wait, you mean.. for Apple?

Since you referenced 2013 - iOS 7 beta 1 didn't even boot on my phone.

There's no way they'll be able to change drop-down box sizes and text alignment in just 2-3 months.

To be real for a moment, the regression I'm most concerned about is navigation - keyboard navigation as well as sidebar navigation. Getting that right is something both the SwiftUI team and the Settings team have to coordinate on.
