Snebes you are correct there are laws to cover warranty issues. I asked as a question not as a statement if fact. However on apple's site ut says they can at their discresion (sp?) honor the warranty from non authorized dealers the only time I know of that they usually have a lot of problems is altered devices or resellers from different regions ex. Something intended for another country.

Warranty restrictions or additions can change from state to state. Some states require lifetime labor coverage some do not limit time the 1 yr lasts making 1 yr moot. There is also the fine print of what coverage you may have in addition due to purchase in visa mastercard or warranties from the store itself.

Just a note to all. Some homeowner insurance companies allow policies on your electronics there are also outside insurance such as square trade. These can give coverage for phones and laptops as well

Sounds like a loss leader. They sell it at a loss, and in return they get lots of customers in their store to (hopefully) buy other things that make up for it. I would expect them to run out of stock very quickly, but the buzz it will generate for them will probably more than justify it.

First I hear of it, I'll be checking my store in the morning, I've got a T.J. Maxx around the corner from me. Seems less than likely because the whole town would have known about this by now.

I wonder if this could be because the 16GB WiFi model is selling really badly? Are there any model specific sales statistics?

West Coast gets no love. Spoke to employee at a CA location who said no availability west of Colorado.

I think it is completely outragous. How can a company do that? Split it up between the country.

How can they do it? Simple, just don't send SKU's past CO. Its not hard to not sell something if you do not want to sell something.

Of Apple Consumer Electronics is clearing stock for a January refresh.

When the iPad 2 is launched I would not be surprised to see an entry iPad 1 at that $399 or lower price, much like they did with the iPod touch. That would pretty much cut the legs from under wannabe competitors.

The iPad costs like $230 to make, and people are wondering how they can sell it for "only" $400?

Nice! iPad2 is coming!

Maybe just phased out, much like the 8GB iPhone. I'll bet that they're just not selling enough to justify the investment. Your average iPad consumer buys the best they can afford, it's not the same consumer demographics as the iPod, say.

And of course, Apple will still be making money on them. Shame they're still $680 equivalent in the UK.

TJX is not a loss leader retailer.
Their model is to buy low, sell low and move quickly for a high turnover of inventory, clear the floor for the next item
I would be very surprised if they had a restock on the ipad

people plz read the comments before you post the exact same thing on every page :) worst topic ever

I'd say that they've ordered a very small supply and selling it at a loss to get people through the door - they'll sell out quickly of the $399 ones but they'll probably have the full price ones there for people to purchased who 'missed out'. Deliberately under buying, under pricing and then pushing the customer to the more expensive version is a well known trick especially in the supermarket industry.

With iPad sales exceeding most predictions with an estimated 13.8 million units* to be sold in only the nine months they were on sale in 2010, the phrase "selling really badly" applied to any of the six models would be approaching meaninglessness.

(* "iSuppli has increased its iPad sales estimates from 12.9 million to 13.8 million for 2010, from 36.5 million to 43.7 million for 2011, and from 50.4 million to 63.3 million for 2012." link)

A few months ago, the 16gb wifi only model was extremely hard to get. Also, there's no way that the lowest priced model would sell less than the others.

MacRumors forum member Chupa Chupa conducted a poll before the iPad was released asking which iPad model people intended to buy. Here are the results:

16GB w/o 3G 59 22.61%
16GB w/ 3G 20 7.66%
32GB w/o 3G 54 20.69%
32GB w/ 3G 35 13.41%
64GB w/o 3G 30 11.49%
64GB w/ 3G 63 24.14%
Voters: 261.

I thought there had been a more recent poll in the iPad sub-forum asking which model people had actually purchased, but my search turned up nothing. Therefore I'm going to create a new thread asking that very poll question to get some current data.

wow...so no sales restriction? that is interesting. do you know how many they had? did any manager/sales clerk say anything about them?

They were sales restrictions, one per customer. But I just walked out and back in to different cashiers three times. And when I called earlier that day, the manager said they had 7 in stock. When I got to the store, they had 5 left.
