T-Minus (3) Days Until VEGA!!

Strictly as a gaming GPU, this launch will be an interesting one. A GPU debuting on Macbooks will likely have to contend with the limitation imposed on it by both Apple and other companies like Microsoft, game developers etc pertaining technical and software/os support.

As an OS Windows has always had the upper hand when it comes to gaming features support. It'll take Apple sometime before its implementation of Metal is fully taken advantage of by developers. Meanwhile on the Windows side, Apple's commitment to sorting out current MBP problems and providing good Vega and bootcamp support in the future will be of critical importance in determining the quality of user experience for prospective vMBP owners looking to do some modern gaming on the side.

Also, Apple might have missed out on a killer product with a Vega-variant Mac Mini design. But that can wait until next year, whereas the MBP can't, or so seems what Tim Cook thinks.

Any chance they drop the touchbar in the Vega update?
No.

I don't think Metal will ever be on par with DirectX in terms of adoption. Vulcan might be, eventually, but I don't quite know where Apple stand on that. They seem to be dismissing open standards again now.

Agree on Vega in Mac mini though. A Mac mini based on 2200G and priced roughly at cost (let's say $300) would have been an amazing gateway drug. And, being Apple, it would have been amazing to have one product that is amazing value, to trick people into believing that all their products are amazing value.

Question remains if AMD will have a Windows driver at launch. To compare these new Vega chips people will have to boot into Windows and run benchmarks against nVidia's 1050/ti/1060 to see where they fall in. AMD shines in Direct3d 12 and Vulcan, whereas nVidia shines in D3D11.

some people said in the press realise it said nov 14th but that changed that to late November

Apple press release still says november 14th... Apple support has confirmed that Vega will be an extra-cost option over the default 555X/560X.

Anyone have any news?

Swiss store says "by end of November". Currently there is no option to select the GPU. Coming up:
  • Radeon Pro Vega 16 mit 4 GB HBM2 Grafikspeicher

  • Radeon Pro Vega 20 mit 4 GB HBM2 Grafikspeicher
I wish the MacMini had this extra-cost option...

An eGPU case alone is at least $200.

I bought a slot-power one some years ago, then I had to get a more powerful charger, thinner fan, connector, crimping tool. And an RX 460 still was too hot/hungry.

Do you have a link? I never saw the 14.11. mentioned by Apple directly, only third-party sites. Apple website and press release always said “end of November for me”

Yes - https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2018/10/all-new-macbook-air-takes-flight/

Look at "Pricing and Availability" at the bottom of the site.

"The new graphics configuration option for MacBook Pro will be available to order on apple.com and in Apple retail stores and through Apple Authorized Resellers starting Wednesday, November 14."

EDIT: well at least I got bronze, lol.

So, looking at the specs page of the 15" Macbook Pro at apple.com - it looks like the "low" spec 15" inch with 555X will be upgradable to 560X only in the fucture.
Only the high spec 15" with 560X stock will be upgradable to Vega 16/20 at an extra cost.

They very well might. They showed Windows gaming in the trailer at least :)

I just realized that they have two options, Pro Vega 16 and Pro Vega 20 with 16 and 20 CU's respectively. For comparison, a 2200G APU has 8 CU, and Vega 56 has 56 CU's. That seems to suggest performance similar to the 560X, but that doesn't make sense. Maybe they can get to 1050Ti levels. Probably not 1060.

The APUs are bandwidth-limited. The 11CUs in the 2400G have about RX 560 power, but perform like RX 550.

I think it’s coming soon. They dropped the Late November tag in some countries.

Ah yes, of course. But they overclock quite well. :)

Maybe 1060 level performance then?
The 1060 6GiB is about as fast as 32 Polaris CUs on the desktop.

That means it would require at least 24 Vega CUs.

But on mobile there could be less of a clock difference.

Although Apple likes it really thin.
