Order placed. i9 , 32GB RAM, Vega 20 .
[doublepost=1542210438][/doublepost]Looks like the press release was true ;) so much for late November Haha.

Well I guess when factoring BTO/delivery, it is around late November :).

I read someone equates the VEGA 20 performance to a 1050, is that about right? Trying to weigh that against an eGPU solution.

Technically it is probably better than even a 1050 TI. As for real world usage, I don't know, depends what you do?

Vega 16 is probably around 1050. Vega 20 probably somewhere between 1050Ti and 1060.

VEGA is now available in the US store for me ($250 and $350 options). Check it out.
Happy to see that it's less than $1k. :)

400€ to upgrade to Vega 20 from 560x. That's pretty nuts.
Pretty much consistent with Apple's pricing strategy, actually: you start from the stock config, then it's only 400€ to get the i9, but at that point for another 400€ you can get 32GB RAM, so why not, and since you are already spending that much why don't you throw in another 400€ for Vega 20 as well?

They're doing this on purpose, and like it or not it's clever marketing psychology: every time you're only a few hundred bucks away from getting the latest and greatest. You can see this from the fact that a lot of people who clearly need just the base model are always wondering whether they should get these upgrades.

Yeah, and it's how people can end up arguing that you get 20% more performance by paying only 14% more. Seems like you're getting a good deal, when they're in fact asking double market rates for all the upgrades.

It's also pretty sneaky that you can't upgrade from the base model, you have to upgrade from the already upgraded model. That's another $200 secretly added to the price.

I think they do that to make it cheaper to do BTO - by having less possible configurations. Probably also makes their testing easier!

That doesn't make any sense to me. Do you have a reference to back that up?

Anyone talked with Apple to change their new machine for a BTO option with $350. It is ridiculous that they come with new machines after only 3-4 months. Especially when it has not been working properly all this time.

Hopefully Apple will do their $150 Free Giftcard Promo again this year for Black Friday when i order mine with the Vega 20 BTO. I live next to New Hampshire and can pick up there to save on tax vs here in MA. That should help offset the cost of the video card upgrade.

Anyone know if they will actually have units with the Vega 16/20s for in store pickup besides going the BTO route? I know they sometimes have high spec models in stock.

Why not? Seems pretty self-explanatory, also explains why pretty much all manufacturers do something similar across all industries.
What seems self-explanatory? Reducing the number of option permutations in general, or strategically removing options to steer customers into spending more than they otherwise would? The former is obvious and needs no explanation. Apple is doing the latter, they're doing it to deceive their customers, and I don't think it's obvious to everyone.

Removing permutations also forces people to spend more.

You want 512GB for your Surface Laptop and 16GB RAM but don’t need the i7? You can’t with the i5, tough luck.

With this mindset, it's clear that you have not reached the required level of maturity to own tech devices.

Right. Apple is listing $350 for an upgrade that you're actually paying $550 for. You think this ok. I think it's deceptive and not ok. Different standards.

Your cost savings argument is invalid in this case because Apple is not actually doing anything to reduce manufacturing costs. Between the two 15" models you can potentially have something like 120 different configurations, and Apple have strategically reduced that to what? 110? That's more likely to increase manufacturing costs than to reduce it.

And in case it's not obvious to you, they're the same model. Same logic board, same case, same fans, same chips, same everything, just different options.

The kernel panic issue is the main thing keeping me from wanting to get a new MBP with Vega. But since we are entering the holiday return period, maybe that will be long enough to see if I have the issue. If I start getting kernel panics, I'm sending it right back.
