Will I have to pay anything extra for this iPad Air? Can I just add it to my account?

I just want the iPad and free 200mB of data. I will hardly ever use the data since I connect to WIFI...
According to their FAQ, no need to pay extra (assuming you're buying the iPad Air cash). If you're getting it via the EIP, then obviously, you need to pay the monthly installment for the device.

Well yea, I want to buy and pay over 24 months...I'm wondering if adding it as a second line will cost me anything more than the hardware cost per month.

Nope. As I understand it, they add it to your account for $10/month but then they also give you a $10/month credit so it cancels out.

Do I have to be on a plan or a contract in order to get the free data?

In order to get the 200 MB of free Starter Data, you need to have an active Mobile Internet account with T-Mobile.

If you are a postpaid customer, you’ll need to have an On Demand data plan at minimum which is $0/mo. if you are a voice customer (after $10 line credit).

If you are a prepaid customer, you’ll need to activate a prepaid account. You do not have to a purchase data pass in order to access your free Starter Data. T-Mobile does not require an annual service contract.

Any knowledge of whether T-Mobile will allow the ipad personal hotspot to work (using your data plan allowance, obviously)?

When I last bought Verizon allowed, AT&T did not without extra charges - as far as I was told.

Anyone know about att next? I have one of their mobile share plan, can I use next to buy the iPad? How much would it cost a month using next?

$10/mo line access fee + monthly installment for device (device cost/20 months). There's a separate thread discussing Next.

Nothing at all except for the ding on your credit report. :p

The ding gets you approved. Actually taking the deal means adding a record to your credit history, showing 24 month financing for a $500 purchase. Plus any activity good or bad, during that period. Pretty small payoff for such a risk, IMO.

They're banking on freeloading customers liking their service enough to pay for higher data tiers or perhaps even move their cellphone service to T-Mobile.

Off contract for 2 months, I've been looking for a way out of vzw. Assuming its worth the jump, this program could yield TMO, major long term benefits.

Pretty sure you've got it wrong. $20/month w/ $10 discount for Postpaid Voice service is $10 month for 500m/unlimited postpaid.

I'm talking about the 200MB free starter data. Folks with 500MB LTE/unlimited also get $10 discount bringing down cost of service to $10/mo.

Lol, my comment was more tongue-in-cheek, hence, the smiley. I'm well aware that this is a seriously good deal. :)

Yep, I know. It's a really smart move on their part. T-Mobile plans have always been pretty good (in particular, the old BYOD Value Plan) and I've wanted to switch to them for a long time now. I've actually tried T-Mobile's service a couple of times (unlocked phone + prepaid SIM kit). Unfortunately, coverage on both times kinda sucked in the areas I need it so I didn't bother reloading. Having T-Mobile on the iPad would give me a way to continuously trial T-Mobile service thus, I can make the switch once coverage improves.

Why would T-Mobile or any carrier sell a non-cellular model ;) And in this case/thread/discussion T-Mobile is giving 200mb free, so how would the person get that data on a non cell model...
You were wrong and that is all :)

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/device/tablet/samsung-galaxy-tab-cpo

I would imagine these devices are sold wifi only as a) devices to use with a mifi or similar device b) to generate store traffic and c) to earn a profit. It's nice to have a one stop shop. Buy the wife an iphone, buy the kid a wifi tablet, etc.

I've honestly never considered a cellular tablet until t-mob announced this free plan so the $500 price was fixed in my memory as THE PRICE for ipads. But I'm definitely buying cell model now! Free data makes up for the ridiculous surcharge apple adds for cellular radio+GPS.

The HP laptop I own came with the free 200MB data plan (24 months). The phone reps and store reps had no info on the plan and it could only be activated using the SIM that came with the laptop and only by inserting the SIM and disabling wifi so that the laptop could take you to the T-Mobile page to sign up. Once you fill out the info (name address (no credit card), etc) you get an e-mail that you free trial has begun

Cheers,

Cool, so we don't even need to enter real personal data for the NSA to track us with? Excellent.

So, in trying to see which carrier would be cheaper to go with for the Air (ATT vs TMO) I saw that if I add the Air to my mobile share account on Next it would be around $63 per month! I did a "mock" order so to speak by adding the Ipad 4 to my account. I currently have the mobile share 4gb plan. After seeing the summary of charges, it would be the $29 for the ipad, $23 for the data (with my FAN discount) and the $10 for the access.
Why is there an extra $30 charge for the data? Does the ipad itself get it's own 4gb of data? Shouldn't it just be the $10, plus the amount of the installment (in this case the ipad 4 for $29)? Am I missing something?

Looks like you're not adding the device to your existing account but putting it on a separate line. There should be an option to join an existing Mobile Share group where you need to put in the phone number for one of the existing lines on the account. Not sure but you might need to be signed in to your AT&T account when you do this. iPad Air 16GB should be $10 line access + $31.50 installment plan if you add to existing Mobile Share.

Ah! I see. I'll try that.

Keep in mind that not everyone will qualify for $0 down on these iPads. Don't be shocked if they asked for half upfront, which still is still better than the entire amount, because I had to give them half up front when me and the mrs got an iPhone 5 with them.

Good point because when I was doing my "mock" order to compare plans with the ATT Next, it didn't ask about a credit check. Then again, I didn't select "check out" either. I just got as far as the order summary.
So, I'm assuming then once you have the Air (or Mini) in your cart ready to go, and you hit "check out" that's when they're going to ask for the credit check?

When you opened your account with AT&T, they already ran your credit. Assuming you've always paid your bills on time, I don't think they'll do another credit check when you add another line because you've already proven your credit worthiness.

That makes sense. I just thought they would check it since I'm asking to pay for the iPad in monthly installments, as TMO would.

If you do the Next program then they will run the credit again. To see if you qualify for the finance. That is what they told me

----------

I called my local T-Mobile to see if they have been trained by now.

I asked how do I get the free 200mb when coming in with my own Ipad.

He said pay $10 for a SIM kit. Start a T-Mobile account of my choice and the 200mb will be added to my account.

I said do I have to pay anything? He said yes the monthly service with no contract. Buy the 500mb or 2.5GB then the 200 mb stacks on those.

Guess Friday will tell.

I figured that. But those specific details aren't on their website, however that's what a TMO rep told me as well, that a monthly data plan was required.

Yeah, My credit is crap but my wife's is great. But I'm just planning on putting the $600 I was going to spend on a 32GB wifi model toward the biggest version available 64 or 128 for TMO. But this does depend on wether I need to have a separate plan. Honestly I'm fine with the 200mbs stacked as long as I don't have to get a plan for the financing deal. I'll just do some prepaid plans every so often and see how much I'm using the cell data.

You can get the SIM kits for free with free shipping on T-Mobile's website.

128gb model @ 24 payments

I am very interested in the 128gb tmobile ipad air, but i only want to pay the installment plan for 24 months. does anybody have any definitive answer on whether they are selling the 128gb at tmobile stores and if there will be an installment plan for them? 32 is $99 extra and 64 is $199 extra so i'm assuming 128gb is $299 extra? i'd love to know if anybody has a more definite answer. thanks for reading

Verizon is just an extra $10 on a family share plan, far superior service and coverage

Easy choice
